Tanggal 3 dan 4 Februari adalah awal musim semi pada kalender tua. Jadi hari sebelum awal musim semi disebut "Setsubun." Pada hari Setsubun, orang menabur Mame, berupa kacang kedelai panggang, dan memakannya. Orang menggunakan biji- bijian karena kata "Mame" mirip dengan "Mametsu" yang berarti "mengusir kejahatan/atau setan." Dahulu, dalam satu tahun terdapat 4 kali perayaan festival setsubun, yaitu pada musim semi, musim panas, musim gugur dan musim dingin. Saat ini, setsubun hanya digunakan untuk menunjukkan hari sebelum memasuki musim semi (Hari terakhir sebelum memasuki musim semi). Saat ini, perayaan setsubun jatuh pada tanggal 3 atau 4 Februari setiap tahun. Di antara 4 kali perayaan setsubun tersebut, saat ini yang tersisa hanya perayaan setsubun pada penyambutan datangnya musim semi saja. Barang kali alasannya adalah perubahaan musim dingin ke musim semi merupakan hal yang paling menyita perhatian semua orang dibandingkan perubahan musim semi ke musim panas, dari musim panas ke musim gugur dan seterusnya. Selain itu, satu hari sebelum memasuki musim semi adalah titik awal dari sistem kalender yang 1 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA menyebutkan adanya 24 posisi matahari dalam satu tahun. Setiap posisi matahari diberi nama yang melambangkan fenomena alam dan musim. Selain melempar kacang-kacangan, di daerah fukuoka merayakan setsubun dengan makan sushi yang disebut “Ehoumaki” (sejenis sushi futomaki yang tidak dipotong-potong). Sushi dimakan tanpa berhenti sambil menghadap sesuai dengan arah mata angin tempat bersemayamnya dewa keberuntungan untuk tahun yang bersangkutan. Sushi dipegang dengan kedua belah tangan dan orang yang sedang makan dilarang berbicara sampai sushi habis dimakan. Kushida adalah kepercayaan yang mengacu pada animisme serta dipercayai merupakan agama asli bangsa Jepang. Kata kushida berasal dari tulisan cina shen tao yang berarti jalan ketuhanan (the way of kami). Di dalam hemp culture in japan (2017), disebutkan bahwa arti dari jalan ketuhanan ini merupakan sebuah ekspresi ritual dari sebuah rasa hormat kepada “ kami ” (wujud tuhan dalam bentuk roh) dalam kehidupan sehari – hari. Kesucian dan kesuburan menjadi hal yang penting di dalam ajaran kushida. Banyak ajaran kushida yang tidak tertulis, walaupun kushida memiliki buku catatan tentang cerita asal – usul Jepang (kojiki), dan kronologis jepang (nihongi atau nihon shoki), yang merupakan kedua buku sakral kushida. Kedua buku tersebut ditulis sekitar tahun 712 – 720, dan merupakan buku kompilasi tentang tradisi lisan, mitologi, serta upacara kushida kuno. Tetapi,” kojiki ” dan “ nihon shoki ” lebih terlihat sebagai buku sejarah, topografi, dan kesusastraan jepang kuno. Terdapat juga engishik (kumpulan dari 50 buku) diselesaikan pada tahun 927, kumpulan koleksi berbagai buku ini 2 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA membahas mengenai upacara formal kuil, organisasi kepemimpinan keagamaan, doa serta liturgi formal. Setelah restorasi meiji dan selama perang dunia II, kushida dianggap sebagai kepercayaan daerah setempat dengan kaisar sebagai kepalanya dan sangat lekat sekali dengan nasionalisme. Masa kejayaan kushida diakhiri oleh konstitusi setelah perang, tetapi sebagai kepercayaan komunitas, kushida masih memegang peranan penting diberbagai aspek kepercayaan komunitas, kushida masih memegang peranan penting diberbagai aspek upacara dan simbol kehidupan bangsa jepang. Kuil kushida memiliki banyak sekali upacara dan perayaan (matsuri). Dalam menjalankan upacara atau perayaan tersebut, terdapat ritual – ritual tertentu dalam pelaksanaannya. Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively).

It is a serial cultural property that has eight component parts, all of which are linked to the worship of a sacred island that has continued from the fourth century to the present day. These component parts include Okitsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, which encompasses the entire island of Okinoshima and its three attendant reefs, located in the strait between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean peninsula; Okitsu- miya Yohaisho and Nakatsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, located on the island of Oshima; and Hetsu-miya of Munakata Taisha and the Shimbaru-Nuyama Mounded Tomb Group, located on the main island of Kyushu. Okinoshima has unique archaeological sites that have survived nearly intact, providing a chronological account of how ancient rituals based on nature worship developed from the fourth to the ninth centuries. It is of outstanding archaeological value also because of the number and quality of offerings discovered there, underscoring the great importance of the rituals and serving as evidence of their evolution over a period of 500 years, in the midst of a process of dynamic overseas exchange in East Asia.

Because of its close ties to Japanese culture, and Shinto’s strong emphasis on place in its practice, it does not seem to be the kind of religion that would migrate to other areas of the world and convert new practitioners. However, not only are there examples of Shinto being practiced outside of Japan, the people doing the practice are not always of Japanese heritage. The Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is one of the only fully functional Shinto shrines in the United States and is run by the first non-Japanese Shinto priest. This thesis looks at the community of practice that surrounds this American shrine and examines how membership is negotiated through action. There are three main practices that form the larger community: language use, rituals, and Aikido. Through participation in these activities members engage with an American Shinto community of practice.

Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), works of fiction were liberally illustrated with woodblock printed images, which, especially towards the mid-19th century, had become an essential component of most popular literature in Japan. With the opening of Japan’s borders in the Meiji period (1868-1912), writers who had grown up reading illustrated fiction were exposed to foreign works of literature that largely eschewed the use of illustration as a medium for storytelling, in turn leading them to reevaluate the role of image in their own literary tradition. As authors endeavored to produce a purely text-based form of fiction, modeled in part on the European novel, they began to reject the inclusion of images in their own work.
