The industry’s top honor was presented to the class of 2020 at a celebration held at the ICON Convention Center in Detroit on July 22. The induction ceremony was attended by Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung, who participated in Honorary Chairman Mong-Koo Chung’s place. Chairman Chung received the induction trophy and made a speech on behalf of his father. “Honorary Chairman Chung grew Hyundai Motor group into the world’s fifth largest automaker from its humble beginning. If my father were here, he would say he owes this honor to our employees, dealers and fantastic customers,” said Euisun Chung. “My father continued the legacy of my grandfather Ju-yung Chung, who founded Hyundai. He expanded the Group’s presence globally and continued to pursue excellence in quality. He made the Group something that employees and customers can all be proud of.” Chairman Chung also did not forget to mention his vision for the future. “As Hyundai embraces the challenges and the opportunities of the 21st century, we will continue to strive for excellence, challenge convention and lead the evolution of smart mobility. According to the Automotive Hall of Fame, Hyundai Motor Group’s success owes much to Honorary Chairman Chung, and his legacy is on par with other legends of the industry who have launched and guided automotive firms to global growth and renown. Through his leadership, Hyundai Motor Group became the world’s fifth-largest automotive group. The Automotive Hall of Fame also took note of Chung’s many accomplishments, including: Acquiring Kia Motors Corporation into Hyundai Motor Group Spearheading the Group’s growth with new plants in key regions, including United States, Europe, China, India, Brazil and Russia Creating a highly efficient, vertically integrated business structure that produces everything from steel to vehicles The Automotive Hall of Fame was established in 1939 to honor notable business leaders who have contributed significantly to the advancement of the automotive industry and mobility. Chung becomes the first Korean to receive this honor, which was first announced in February 2020. The Automotive Hall of Fame previously honored Chung with its Distinguished Service Citation Award in 2001. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s Automotive Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony celebrated the inductees for the years 2020 and 2021. Inductees announced in 2020 include Thomas Gallagher, former CEO of Genuine Parts Company; Jay Leno, automotive heritage leadership through his Jay Leno’s Garage series on CNBC; and Helene Rother, one of the first women in automotive interior design for General Motors, Nash Motors. The class of 2020 also included Mobility Innovator Awardee Harold Goddijn, CEO and co-founder of TomTom technologies. Inductees announced in 2021 include C.R. Patterson and Frederick Patterson, leaders of the U.S.’s first and only African American owned auto manufacturer; and Charlie Wiggins, a barrier-breaking motorsports racer and engineer. During the Induction ceremony, a tribute video was played to show the Honorary Chairman’s accomplishments and contributions to the automotive industry. In the meantime, NEXO and IONIQ 5 were on display to demonstrate Chung’s contribution to spearheading the industry’s efforts to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology and electrification. The day before the induction ceremony, an engraving of Chairman Chung’s signature was placed on permanent display at the Automotive Hall of Fame along with the signatures of the other inductees.     The Top 20 Korean Multinationals: Changes and Continued Growth of Foreign Investment Seoul and New York, March 5, 2015 Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University in Seoul, and the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), a joint center of the Columbia Law School and the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York, are releasing the results of their survey of Korean multinationals today. The survey, conducted during 2014, is part of a long-term study of the rapid global expansion of multinational enterprises (MNEs) from emerging markets.1 The research for this report was conducted in 2014 and covers the period from 2011 to 2013.2 Highlights In 2013, the top 20 Korean multinationals, ranked by their foreign assets (See Table 1), jointly held US$68.9 billion assets abroad.3 Most firms were subsidiaries of Korea’s eight leading business groups (or chaebols), including Samsung, POSCO, LG, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai-Kia Motors, SK, Lotte, and Hyosung Group. Five out of the 20 multinationals were also included in UNCTAD’s “Top 100 non-financial TNCs from developing and transition economies” in 2012.4 The average age of the top 20 firms is about 47 years, which is two times the average age of Korea’s top 1,000 firms (ranked in terms of total assets). There is a high concentration by the top players in the list in terms of foreign assets. Among the top 20 companies, Samsung Electronics, POSCO, and Hyundai Motor Company ranked in the top three in that order. There was a significant difference between first and second place, with the foreign assets of Samsung Electronics more than doubling that of POSCO.

When ready, aim the timing light to the graduated scale on the front case cover and see what number on the scale the notch on the pulley points to.

Thus, I have no intention here of repeating in any depth what is covered well elsewhere; rather, only a summary of main events follows.1 Views among analysts vary as to exactly why the crisis in Korea occurred. Steven Radelet and Jeffrey Sachs (1998), for example, argue that the crisis in Korea was almost entirely a result of volatility of international financial flows. They claim that the “fundamentals” of the Korean economy were sound and that there was no reason, apart from the withdrawal of funds from Korea by international investors, why the econ- omy should have undergone the crisis that in fact did occur. This interpretation is, of course, somewhat at variance with the story told here. Without question, the classical macroeconomic fundamentals of Korea appeared sound in the middle of 1997; inflation was low, there was a government fiscal surplus, overall growth was positive, and the balance of payments on the current account, while in deficit, was not seriously so 1. For more detailed descriptions and analyses of the crisis, the reader should see, e.g., Goldstein (1998) or Haggard (2000). Also, Nanto and Jones (1997) provide an excellent summary and analysis of the early stages of the crisis as it affected Korea in 1997. Collusive links between politics and business were a major focus during South Korea’s 2017 presidential election. In an address to the national after his election victory, President Moon Jae-in promised to carry out reforms targeting the chaebol (industrial conglomerates) and eliminate collusion between politicians and business people. The purpose of this article is to clarify how the chaebol reform process is likely to proceed, what the focal points will be, and the issues that could arise. 2. The economic policy of the Moon Jae-in administration is based on the four pillars of income-driven growth, the establishment of an economy that will generate jobs, fair competition (including chaebol reform), and growth through innovation. Immediately after taking power, President Moon Jae-in announced policies targeted toward income-driven growth. Efforts to achieve growth through innovation began in the fall of 2017. The chaebol reform process has not yet begun. 3. Chaebol reform is necessary for several reasons. First, the concentration of economic power in the hands of the chaebol is producing harmful effects, including growing economic disparity, and a lack of jobs for young workers. Second, there have been numerous fraud cases relating to the inheritance of management rights by members of the chaebol families. Third, the chaebol have repeatedly colluded with politicians. 4.
