It began in my Honours year at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2005 with a comment by Professor Catherine Burns and has taken me through a doctorate and a postdoctoral fellowship and sustained me into a full-time position at the University of Pretoria. The key image that caught my attention – the debates between Steve Biko and Rick Turner in Durban in the 1970s – has functioned as the main organising idea for the research that followed and the book I present here. It is my hope that such a relationship – fraught but productive – can inspire a new generation of students and activists to a radical but tolerant politics, which does not shy away from difficult discussions, but simultaneously never sacrifices the present treasures in the pursuit of the grand ideal, the ‘big idea’, which gives power to all ideologies. This book has developed through the support of many different people. It was made possible firstly by Professor Saul Dubow who took me on as a doctoral student at the University of Sussex in 2007. I was able to complete my doctorate in 2011, with Professor Alan Lester as my joint supervisor. A postdoctoral fellowship at the Society, Work and Development Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand, under the care of Professor Karl von Holdt allowed me the space and time to rewrite the thesis into its current form as a book and to undertake additional research. Professor Zimitri Erasmus was generous with her time as well, acting as a research mentor. While acknowledging the rhetorical purpose of Turner’s use of the parable of the ‘eye of the needle’, it is my belief that hope remains only in such an ethics as that encapsulated in Jesus’s life and teaching – people require transformation as much as systems – an insight that I think resonates with Biko’s fundamental premise. While impossible to determine just how many of the activists followed this as a transcendental belief, or followed Christ (some explicitly refuted belief), it was nonetheless a powerful touchstone of transformative ethics. As political parties and popular movements, such as Rhodes Must Fall and Fees Must Fall most recently, have sought sources of inspiration, history has become a valued strategic terrain from which to assert claims to the present, evident by the overt linking by present-day students of their protests to the Soweto Uprising of 16 June 1976, which is now celebrated as the public holiday Youth Day. This book seeks to engage with that history, particularly the decade that has most recently seemed to inspire popular imagination – the 1970s. In that decade, activists reignited the struggle against apartheid and reorganised the trade union movement after the Durban Strikes of 1973, Black Consciousness flowered under the iconic leader Stephen Bantu Biko, culminating in open rebellion in the Soweto Uprising. The legacy of that decade has taken many forms in contemporary South Africa. The trade union movement remains a powerful, if weakened, force. The young students of that generation are today’s leaders. Black Consciousness remains a vibrant yet underground stream of thinking, bubbling to the surface in radical social critiques and sometimes in open debate. Abuses by those in power and continued economic disempowerment have given added credence and power to fresh analyses of South African post-apartheid life, such as that presented by Black Consciousness.1 This book is part of an effort of a new generation of scholars who have re-examined the 1970s in South Africa. It suggested that the movement of trade-unions to invest members' contributions in 'investment companies' resembled models for Afrikaner economic empowerment. InparticularNail (New Africa InvestmentLimited), one of the flagships of Black Economic Empowerment, was compared to Rembrandt, one of the flagships of Afrikaner economic power (SALB 1996). What was being juxtaposed here was African and Afrikaner nationalism. Indeed, it was hinted that they were somehow, even if modestly, similar. What was important was the principle of the comparison: that they could be compared at all! Since then, even if it is not commonplace, it is at least not unusual to hear journalists and others draw similarities between them (see, for example, Heribert Adam in the Weekly Mail & Guardian, April 9,1998). Today it is even possible to hear members of government or the ANC hold Afrikaner nationalism up as a model for Black Economic Empowerment (see Deputy Minister of Finance, MB Mpahlwa 2001). In this vein African and Afrikaner nationalism are beginning to receive comparative treatment in the academic literature as well. Christoph Marx in a recent article discusses continuities between the cultural nationalist ideas of Afrikaner nationalism and those of current day Africanism.

Southern Africa is a large and diverse region, with a rich and complex history dating back to the cradle of civilization. We will therefore only be looking at certain key moments and events. We will consider how the history of the region has been written, and from whose perspective. The course will touch on a range of issues, from settlement and displacement, slavery, colonialism, and projects of empire, to institutionalized racism, industrialization and its implications for communities, workers, and migration, State control of people and movement, local political activism in a continental and global context, urbanization, and other topics. A key learning outcome will be to develop an understanding of historiographical debates: Who writes history? In what context? To what are historians responding? What are a scholar’s aims, and what earlier historical understanding does s/he engage? Does s/he support or challenge accepted interpretations of the past? Students are not expected to have an in-depth grasp of any particular debates, but more to gain insight into how understandings of history and the events and people historical writings describe change over time.

Ian Macqueen D.Phil candidate Department of History University of Sussex [email protected] 5 May 2010 Black Consciousness in Dialogue: Rick Turner, Stephen Biko and the Durban Moment, 1970-19741 This paper looks to suggest that the Durban Moment concretised the hiatus in the gradualism and moderate political reform envisioned by South African liberalism, which had initially been sparked by the breakaway of the South African Students Organisation (SASO) from the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) in 1968. The Durban Moment confronted the need for radical change and in so doing entailed questioning the previously secure paradigm of paternalist custodianship of African grievances. The moment opened up the terrain of political thinking in South Africa and forced recourse to the demand for radical political change. It was this problem of change that formed the central theme in the contestations, debate and dialogue that were central aspects of the moment. Although the emergence of Black Consciousness in South Africa played a central causative role in challenging the white liberal world view, it was a moment that was mediated in part through interpersonal dialogue and friendship, in a few but significant instances, and through a refining of a political strategy, in the form of class theory.2 Historicising the collaboration that persisted after the formation of SASO is therefore a central concern of the paper. One of Biko’s contentions with the artificial interracial meetings organised by liberals was the way in which they acted as a panacea for both white and black, soothing the guilty conscience of the white liberal and encouraging the black person that they were in fact worthwhile and equal, but producing no tangible fruit.

Let a race of men rise and take control . – MARGARET WALKER, “FOR MY PEOPLE” I HAVE INTRODUCED THIS CHAPTER with an extract from Margaret Walker’s poem “For My People” .1 It is a verse from the African-American experience of slavery and dehumanisation . The poem was first published in 1942, and could be viewed as a precursor to the civil rights movement . It ends with a “call to arms”, but it is also an affirmation of the struggle for social justice . This poem resonated with Steve Biko and Black Consciousness activists because the call for a “new earth” to arise, the appeal to courage, freedom and healing, constituted the precise meaning and intent of the gospel of Black Consciousness . Margaret Walker does not so much dwell on the pain of the past or of lost hopes .
