For centuries, the Spanish and Spanish-speaking mestizo (mixed blood) elite oppressed the Mixtec People and their linguistic and cultural practices. These oppressive practices were experienced in Mixtec communities and surrounding urban areas, as well as in domestic and international migrant destinations. In the 1980s, a significant transition occurred in Mexico from indigenismo to a neoliberal multicultural framework. In this transition, discriminatory practices have become increasingly “symbolic,” referring to their assertion in everyday social practices rather than through overt force, obscuring both the perpetrator and the illegitimacy of resulting social hierarchies (Bourdieu, 1991). -

Critique of Puerto Rican Race Relations in Mayra Santos-Febres’ Sobre Piel Y Papel

In the collection of essays Sobre piel y papel (2005), Mayra Santos-Febres, a well-known contemporary Puerto Rican writer and public intellectual,1 reflects on this unease: “Sé muy bien que nombrar colores de piel es asunto escabroso en nuestro país. Nombrar al negro o a la negra, al mulato, a la grifa, al jabao. […] Esto de hablar de lo negro resulta difícil empresa. Y por ello necesario” (63). She poses to ask why by naming race we nearly trespass what is socially acceptable. Her response is immediate: “‘Racismo,’ contestarían algunos sin pensarlo dos veces. Y tienen razón. Sin embargo, mientras más lo pienso, más me convenzo de que esta contestación oculta más de lo que revela” (Santos-Febres, Sobre 64). The writer argues that tact required for treating race and color speaks of complex social phenomena that signify the burden of living mestizaje. She adds that social consent of avoiding discussing race on the public arena promotes inherent racism, making Afro-Puerto Ricans the most disadvantaged group (Sobre 73, 160). Addressing the linguistic unease of mentioning race, Santos-Febres uncovers social and political ramifications of the difficulty of talking about color and race in Puerto Rico. This essay will present that calling for public articulation of blackness, the author proposes a program of writing the African heritage into modern national history, deconstructing racial construction as natural, and thinking about the black identity beyond essentialism. -

Whether it’s James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, Mark Twain’s Pudd’nhead Wilson, or general thoughts of the Harlem Renaissance, The Civil Rights Era, and contemporary struggles that people of color face, race is typically at the center of perceptions of passing. -
Communicating with Hispanic/Latinos
Building Our Understanding: Culture Insights Communicating with Hispanic/Latinos Culture is a learned system of knowledge, behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, values, and norms that is shared by a group of people (Smith, 1966). In the broadest sense, culture includes how people think, what they do, and how they use things to sustain their lives. Cultural diversity results from the unique nature of each culture. The elements, values, and context of each culture distinguish it from all others (Beebe, Beebe, & Redmond, 2005). Hispanics in the United States includes any person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. Latinos are people of “Latin-American” descent (Webster’s 3rd International Dictionary, 2002). Widespread usage of the term “Hispanic” dates back to the 1970s, when the Census asked individuals to self-identify as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central/South American or “other Hispanic.” While the terms Hispanic and Latino are used interchangeably, they do have different connotations. The Latino National Survey (2006) found that 35% of respondents preferred the term “Hispanic,” whereas 13.4% preferred the term “Latino.” More than 32% of respondents said either term was acceptable, and 18.1% indicated they did not care (Fraga et al., 2006). Origin can be viewed as the heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth of the person or the person’s parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States (U. S. Census Bureau, 2000). People who identify their origin as Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino may be of any race (Black/African-American, White/Caucasian, Asian, and Native American) or mixed race. -

Horton 2019 ABSTRACT Working Against Racism from White Subject Positions: White Anti-Racism, New Abolitionism & Intersectional Anti-White Irish Diasporic Nationalism by Matthew W. Horton Doctor of Philosophy in Education and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Na’ilah Nasir, Chair This dissertation is an intervention into Critical Whiteness Studies, an ‘additional movement’ to Ethnic Studies and Critical Race Theory. It systematically analyzes key contradictions in working against racism from a white subject positions under post-Civil Rights Movement liberal color-blind white hegemony and "Black Power" counter-hegemony through a critical assessment of two major competing projects in theory and practice: white anti-racism [Part 1] and New Abolitionism [Part 2]. I argue that while white anti-racism is eminently practical, its efforts to hegemonically rearticulate white are overly optimistic, tend toward renaturalizing whiteness, and are problematically dependent on collaboration with people of color. I further argue that while New Abolitionism has popularized and advanced an alternative approach to whiteness which understands whiteness as ‘nothing but oppressive and false’ and seeks to ‘abolish the white race’, its ultimately class-centered conceptualization of race and idealization of militant nonconformity has failed to realize effective practice. -

The central thesis of the Article is that the dangerous seductions of a U.S. ideology of "post-racialism" are more clearly identified when subject to the comparative law lens. In particular, a comparison to the Brazilian racial democracy version of "post-racialism" is an instructive platform from which to assess the advisability of promoting post-racial analyses of U.S. racial inequality. In Part I the Article introduces the value of comparative law to the future development of CRT Part II provides an overview ofBrazilian "post-racial"discourse. Part III then details the quantitative and qualitative indicators of racial discriminationand intersectionalrace andgender discrimination in Brazil. -

Geography and regionalism are critical to an individual’s experience of being Alawite. n The notion of an »Alawite community« identified as such by its own members has increased with the crisis which started in March 2011, and the growth of this self- identification has been the result of or in reaction to the conflict. n Using its security apparatus, the regime has implicated the Alawites of Homs in the conflict through aggressive militarization of the community. n The Alawite community from the Homs area does not perceive itself as being well- connected to the regime, but rather fears for its survival.
