When her main character, Dorinda Oakley, speaks of going into the dairy business, she is advised, “The cows ain’t all of it, you know.” Katharine Smith Reynolds (1880-1924) was fully aware of this when she dedicated a number of years to transforming the barren ground, which would later become Reynolda, into fertile land that could support not only a wide variety of vegetables for her table, but of American Art. There she grew up among her mother’s circle of wealthy English expatriates. In the 1920s she married Italian Antonio Origo and escaped to a very different world of their choosing, a dilapidated farm on a vast landholding south of Siena. They transformed the dry valley into a working estate with rebuilt farmhouses and a school. They also rebuilt the villa at La Foce and its gardens.

Yeats Both. - Bernard Malamud O n June 22, 1944, a middle-aged couple led a large group of women, children, and older people to safety between advancing Allied and retreating German armies in wartime Italy. The man was Antonio Origo, an idealistic landowner and marchese; the woman was his wife Iris Origo, Anglo- American by birth, Italian by marriage. The people they guided were their tenant families, twenty-three refugee children, an orphaned baby, and their own daughters aged one and three. The Origos owned La Foce, a large agricultural estate in southeastern Tuscany. As the war crept north after the Allied landings in southern Italy, La Foce was increasingly at risk. By spring 1944, the front was only a short distance away, and by June 22, with German artillery positioned in the Origos’ courtyard and soldiers occupying their home, it was right on top of them. They had no choice but to seek safety in nearby towns, setting out with their long, ragged column along roads mined by the German army and strafed by Allied planes. The children were the Origos’ main concern. Iris and Antonio had taken in refugee boys and girls – many malnourished, grieving, and traumatized – after the Allied bombing of Turin and Milan more than a year earlier. Some could barely speak; others recoiled from touch and tenderness. The Origos were determined to protect these children, but now, directly in the path of war, La Foce seemed lost.

In spite of her active role as founder and editor of two modernist anthologies, Marguerite Caetani has long been considered merely as a “lady bountiful” for the multitude of authors she supported during her forty-year career in publishing.     Culture Desk Not a Moment Too Soon: Iris Origo’s War Diary By Cynthia Zarin August 1, 2018 One of the vital interests of Origo’s “little war diary” is watching the alert, perspicacious mind of a supremely intelligent person coming alive to the situation around her. Photograph Courtesy La Foce t’s almost impossible to imagine a better time to read “A Chill in the Air: I An Italian War Diary, 1939–1940,” by Iris Origo, which is being published this week by New York Review Books. And, if there ever is a better time, it won’t be one we want to live in. Trenchant, intelligent, and written with a cool head, the book records the months before Italy’s descent into the Second World War, when Mussolini’s relationship with Hitler was being presented to the Italian public via a campaign of misinformation, what we would now call fake news. As the title indicates, it’s a chilling read. The diary was published for the rst time last year, although its existence was known to Origo’s family Iris Origo: Marchesa of Val and to her biographer, Caroline Moorehead (“Iris Origo: Marchesa of Val d’Orcia”). Origo—whose extraordinary life was dened by elegant restraint, a matter-of-fact allegiance to reason, and the idea that one has a duty to others —would, I think, be pleased that her book (which she referred to, with her customary understatement, as her “little war diary”) would appear now, nearly eighty years later, when it can be read not only as a historical document but as an urgent message, a stealth paper airplane sent to us from a shadowed past.

    - Dario Gaggio – CHAPTER 4 THE USES OF EMPTYNESS: RURAL TUSCANY AFTER THE EXODUS (1970-1985) 1 Tuscan agriculture shed two thirds of its work force between the early 1950s and the early 1970s, and an additional half in the following two decades. This “exodus” from the countryside took place in two phases. Organized by the Communist Party, Tuscan sharecroppers, who made up the majority of the rural population, rose up in the decade following the end of World War II, demanding the radical transformation of work practices and a land reform. They were faced with the landlords’ stalling strategies and with the hostile reaction of the conservative national government, led after 1947 by the Christian Democrats. The second phase started in the mid-1950s, when Tuscany experienced a process of diffused industrialization, which created jobs that could be filled by former peasants. This process led to the depopulation of vast stretches of territory, especially in the mountainous areas and in the southern half of the region. It also led to the transformation of the rural landscape, which had been shaped in the course of several centuries by the demands of the sharecropping contract (mezzadria). The adventurous tourist can find an unintentional monument to this rural exodus deep in the Orcia valley, near the hamlet of San Piero in Campo, spread over the alluvial plain that stretches between the hilltop town of Contignano to the west and the ramparts of Mount Cetona to the east. Just below the remnants of an abandoned eleventh-century abbey lie an outlet tower and an imposing channel spillway jutting out from the river bed.
