Letters to the Editor

Residents of Wellpark. We are all paying a substantial amount of money per month to keep the communal grounds looking nice. At the moment it’s all new, so does not look too grand. But, give it time and we will look better than Bogbeth. Perhaps the younger residents could be encouraged not to climb the new trees and also not to trample on the new hedges and grass. But to take care of their new surroundings. We are so lucky to live where we do, let's all be able to appreciate this beautiful area. Name & address supplied

Kemnay investigative journalist scoops graduate award

An investigative journalist from Kemnay has been chosen for a graduate of the year 2019 award from the University of Stirling. Dale McEwan, 33, was given the award for his documentary Stolen Vision, which exposed the life-changing consequences of counterfeit medicine in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Fake medicine blinded a number of patients and they had their eyes removed. McEwan was also selected for investigating the exploitation of young video journalists across the UK. Private Eye magazine and the National Union of Journalists are among those who have published McEwan’s reports. His mum, Nancy McEwan, nominated him for the award, which is given to graduates from any year who have made a difference and excelled in their career. McEwan, who went to Kemnay Academy, graduated from Stirling in 2009 with a first classification degree in journalism studies. He said: “I’m extremely honoured. This award goes to everyone whose eyes were removed because of counterfeit medicine, and to those journalists who were exploited just for doing the job they loved. “The University gave me some of the best years of my life. I grew up in a council house and was the first person in my family to attend university. I just want to show that the university experience is open to everyone, regardless of your background. None of it would have been possible without my mum, Nancy, who has always supported me.”

Our natural environment helps to sustain the community There’s a recent (2016) UK Government Report to tell us that “good quality natural landscapes can affect how people feel; it reduces stress and sadness, lifts the mood and makes us feel better”. In Kemnay we enjoy the Don – classified as ‘a blue space’ and Bogbeth, the Green and local woods - all ‘green spaces’. And then there’s our ‘Jewel’, the Place of Origin, a ‘landscape as art’ project. Work began in 1996 and it was officially opened ten years later by HRH The Duke of Kent. Conceived to celebrate 150 years of quarrying in the North-East by the then Kemnay based John Fyffe Ltd, it was designed by a trio of artists – John Maine, Brad Goldberg and Glen Onwin. The cairn on top of the Place of Origin is owned by Breedon Aggregates Ltd, while the woodland is owned by Aberdeenshire Council, which leased the site to Greenbelt on a 99 year lease starting June 2001 at a nominal rent of £1 per year. So what was the intention of the Artists with regard to the use of the Place of Origin? John Maine stated in 2016: Place of Origin is meant to remind people of the underlying source of geology and industry, while at the same time providing a natural landscape in the heart of the village, with access to all. This unequivocally establishes that the artists designed something to be enjoyed by the community by accessing the woodland paths to enjoy the spectacular views from the top of the Place of Origin, and that is what we all bought into – the community, the council and the contractors. Sadly this freedom has become increasingly restricted through poor care and maintenance. The routes - initially broad enough for three people to walk side by side – are now at best single, rutted, muddy tracks. Vegetation is over 5ft high and the unmaintained trees are reclaiming the paths in places creating dark unwelcome tunnels. Aberdeenshire Council - owners of this ground – are letting wilderness reclaim it. We all surely owe it to the present and future generations of Kemnay folk to recognise this is a precious green resource that could be made so much better to help sustain our individual and community lives. There is now a ‘Friends of Place of Origin‘ Facebook group that is acting as a sounding board for folk who care about the Place of Origin and are beginning to set out ways of ensuring in the future everybody will be able to access this incredible green space and enjoy the health benefits. If you don’t have Facebook or e-mail then Sue and Rob will be at the Fyffe Park carpark on Wednesday 14 August at 6.30 p.m. We’ll listen to points of view and there’ll be brief survey forms to fill in. A full description of the project including original photographs can be found at www.kemnay.info/community/places-of -interest/place-of-origin/

Kintore, Kemnay & District Rotary Club

New Rotary Year and New President, Ian McWilliam. As well as being a Rotarian Ian and his family are great supporters of the British Heart Foundation. The Interactors at Kemnay Academy are going to support the BHF this year and are hoping to raise awareness of the prevention and also the resuscitation processes as well as raising money. They spent a morning advertising this to the P7s attending the Academy in June.

Though you might be interested in how the Scots get around especially in the USA. Rotarian Jim Walker gave a great presentation about America’s 4th July and how many Americans of Scottish descent were involved from the signatories on the Declaration, to the Armstrong tartan being taken by Neil to the moon, to Andrew Carnegie from Dunfermline, Pinkerton Detective agency founded by Allan Pinkerton from Glasgow, to David Buick from Arbroath setting up the Buick Company and the Davidson family from Aberlemno who emigrated to Wisconsin and their offspring became the founders of the Harley Davidson Company. Their 2 bedroomed cottage in Aberlemno was renovated and officially opened on July 14th in 2012 and the tiny village of Aberlemno had never seen such excitement as two hundred Harley -Davidsons rumbled in to celebrate the completion of the cottage restoration. People travelled from as far afield as Milwaukee, Canada, Holland and Spain to join the party and see the famous little house. Finally Jean Thomson married our Rotary Founder Paul Harris on 2nd July 1910 in Chicago Jean’s father John had been a railway porter on Caledonian Railway in Aberdeen and lived at 10 Prospect Place. So the Scots do get everywhere – even “Uncle Sam” is supposed to be Sam Wilson whose parents came from Greenock!

Now we have to look for “Oor Wullies”. They are in Inverurie,

Give a Bosie

“Amazing experience”, “emotional”, “really special occasion” just some of the reactions from the 400 people who took part in the “give Bennachie a bosie” event organised by conservation charity the Bailies of Bennachie.

The sun shone as walkers made their way from the Back of Bennachie car park up and over the hill to Mither Tap where at midday they linked hands to form a circle around the base to give the hill a hug.

Outreach officer for the Bailies of Bennachie, Fiona Cormack said:

“It was a special moment to have everyone joined together around the top of the hill. Participants sang along to the sound of the Kintore Pipe Band playing Scotland the Brave, Flower of Scotland and Auld Lang Syne. Some did a Mexican wave, others swung arms and some took a little time to reflect on their reasons for doing the walk.”

“The youngest person taking part was a child of one in a baby carrier. There were lots of children and many pensioners too. One family from New South Wales in Australia took part and there was great support for this community event from the towns and villages around Bennachie,”

“Mither Tap means “mother’s breast” and that led us to raise money for breast cancer care and the University of Aberdeen Development trust’s research into cures for breast cancer through this event. We know that many people who have been affected by the disease took part in the walk.”

One of them, Kate Brosman, from Daviot said she was last up Bennachie after her diagnosis and before her treatment. She said: “I promised myself that I would come back once I was through the other side. It has been a while and I wasn’t sure that I would make it to the top today but I was just up in time for the bosie and feel I have parked the whole experience there.”

Funds raised are being spilt after costs between the two breast cancer charities and the Aberdeen Mountain rescue trust who provided marshals and first event on the day. The Kemnay Scout group also came out to help with members assisting with car parking and marshalling.

After the bosie walkers returned to the field at the Back of Bennachie where they rested in the sunshine and enjoyed pizza, ice cream and coffee and cakes provided by local caterers.

Fiona added:

“The Bailies of Bennachie are delighted that this has been such a tremendous success. This is a very special hill in the hearts of many in the North East of Scotland and we are delighted that so many came to celebrate Mither Tap and raise money for these deserving charities.” [email protected] 07923491116

THE GOOD NEWS - At last we have raised enough money to begin our long-awaited roof repairs, albeit just the small hall roof initially. This will help us gauge how bad the damage is as well as helping us to budget our money for the rest of the repairs.

THE BAD NEWS -

Unfortunately, it does mean we have had to reluctantly cancel our August Market, however, the November (Christmas) Market will be held as planned on the 23rd November.

Classes in the Main Hall will carry on as normal. There will be restricted car parking however, there will be no access to the main car park so vehicles should park at the roadside parking area.

We believe in life after birth and life before death.

REPORT

From all our recent fundraising we have been able to send £4,600 to Christian Aid. Details – Smarties £2105, Jog/Walk £623, Hill climb by Kylie £413, Spring Fling £475, Table Sale/Auction £852, Donations £132.

A big THANK YOU to all who have worked hard to make this possible and to all who donated in any way. You will make a huge difference to the health facilities in Sierra Leone and much more. Leslie McKay, for Christian Aid

Once again we ask all organisers of events in Kemnay & District to give details for publication in the newsletter. It is much better if events do not clash, for in a small community such as ours, these clashes can result in divided loyalties and maybe a lower financial return for those who are raising funds for charity or their clubs expenditure.
