Welcome to the 2011 Season

A very warm welcome to everyone to the 2011 Capital Football season and, in particular, to our Premier League competitions. We particularly welcome back The Tradies club as naming rights sponsor of the Women’s Premier League and extend a warm welcome to The Rock Development Group who are the new sponsors of men’s Premier League football. The support of both of these sponsors is crucial in maintaining a viable competition in terms of standards and rewards for the competing clubs so thank you to both for adding their name to our competitions.

Whilst on the subject of sponsors I’d also like to thank Derbystar for their continued support of the Premier League competitions through the supply of match balls to all competing clubs and TigerTurf, who installed the pitch at the Hawker Football Centre and who sponsor our club championship award.

Season 2011 promises to be another exceptional year for football in the ACT and surrounding region. Our flagship competitions have undergone structural changes with teams leaving and joining the top flight. The men’s Rock Pre- mier League has been re-structured after ANU FC chose not to pursue Premier League football and will revert to a nine-club competition with two bye’s for each club throughout the season.

In The Tradies Women’s Premier League Brindabella Blues have made way, after a tough season in the elite division to focus on building their playing ranks with a view to possibly moving back into the Premier League in later years. In their stead we welcome Gungahlin United, a young vibrant club with close links to City in the Rock Pre- mier League. Their appearance in the women’s competition means that we continue with an eight-club league and a 21-round format that proved very satisfactory last season.

The 2010 Capital Football season was punctuated by the FIFA World Cup held in adding some top-class international football to the calendar and a chance for our players, officials and supporters to watch matches on their televisions and become inspired to take up, or follow, the local game. 2011 offers a similar opportunity in the Women’s game with the Matildas taking part in the FIFA World Cup to be held in Germany in June and July. They’ve been handed a tough draw with , Norway and the unknown quantity that is Equatorial Guinea standing in the way of a quarter final berth. But we believe they can do it! Keep an eye out during the season for news on where you can follow these matches on SBS.

And finally I’d like to extend our appreciation to John Logue and Alan Bradbury for their contributions to the Board over the past years. John, in particular, has been a stalwart throughout the post Crawford Report years and seeing us through the unification of four organisations into a single entity as well as steering the organising committee for eight years. We welcome two new Directors in James Selby and Eddie Senatore and will soon announce a new chair and deputy chair for the board and organisation.

All that remains is for me to wish you and the referees all the very best for a successful 2011. Enjoy your football and I look forward to seeing you around the grounds during the year. Heather Reid CEO. Capital Football

Welcome to the Capital Football 2011 Premier League Season

WELCOME FROM THE WOMEN’S LEAGUE STANDING COMMITTEE

The 2011 season got off to a great start with the Women’s loop Federation Cup. Eight teams competed again this year and newcomers to Premier League, Gungahlin United, showed they are ready for the challenge of the year ahead. Belconnen United were this year’s champions defeating 3-1 on penalties after the score was 0 – 0 following extra time. It was an exciting game and the defence and keepers were outstanding.

The Pre Premiership competition was also successful with most of the teams that will be playing this season nominating. For many teams this tournament is an opportunity to experiment with player positions and for novices and new recruits to have a run with their new team mates. It’s also a time for coaches both new and returning to try something new.

Once more a good number of teams have nominated in the State League / Master’s competition and with the start of the season just around the corner, we are looking forward to what promises to be another successful season full of fun and great contests. We couldn’t have the great competitions we have without the efforts and dedication of our coaches, referees, volunteers and supporters. Thanks for your contribution to women’s football in Canberra. I hope you have an enjoyable season. Fran Sankey Chair—Women’s Standing Committee

WELCOME FROM THE MEN’S LEAGUE STANDING COMMITTEE

Capital Football looks forward to a revamped State League competition after the recommendations from the SL review were completed in 2010. There are ten State League competitions confirmed with ten teams in each competition. All clubs are anticipating strong even competitions.

The Men’s Premier League has a new sponsor ROCK Development Group. Their sponsorship will be used as prize money apportioned to all four divisions with the final portion available to coach Development. Tiger Turf and Derbystar are continuing their sponsorship with the Men’s Premier League. The Federation Cup also has a new sponsor “loop” (Belconnen Markets), who have replaced long time sponsor Project Coordination.

The Premier League clubs are all striving to break the dominance of Canberra FC and place some of the silverware in a different trophy cabinet in 2011. There has been the usual player movement in the off- season and some clubs now have a different make up and hope that they have the mettle to produce some exciting results.

The Masters competitions continues to show strength for our senior players and now have an Over 45’s competition for the most mature masters. Clubs, players and referees look for ward to a competitive season to be played in a fair spirit.

George Lemon Chair—Men’s Standing Committee

CANBERRA FC TOO HOT TO HANDLE

Saturday 18th September 2010 McKellar Park, Belconnen Soccer Centre Canberra FC 6 (Danai Gapare 2’, 45’, Adam Spaleta 9’, 63’, Matt Grbesa 18’, Alex Castro 37’) Belconnen United 0

Referee: Richard Naumovski Crowd: 1,450 Valeri Medal: Adam Spaleta (Canberra FC)

Canberra FC completed a second successive treble with a sensational 6-0 rout of perennial rivals Belconnen United in the 2010 Gatorade Premier League Grand Final at McKellar Park. The League champions were in stunning form and were 5-0 up by the interval, thanks to some quite brilliant goals, to which the Blue Devils simply had no response. Barely two minutes were on the clock when Danai Gapare chased a long ball down the left flank and cut back to send a swirling cross into the Belconnen area which totally outfoxed Rohan Shepherd in the Blue Devils goal to drop into the net.

If that was a surprise to Scott Conlon’s team, what was to follow must have been like living a nightmare. With the flow of play all directed at Shepherd’s goal the lead was doubled before ten minutes had elapsed. Canberra FC was awarded a free-kick wide on the left hand side from where Adam Spaleta sent a venomous delivery into the area that slashed it’s way past Shepherd and into the top corner of the net. Barely eight minutes later and it was 3-0. Matt Grbesa advanced and, from 25 metres, chipped Shepherd who had been drawn off his line by the prospect of a cross to the far post.

By this stage most of the crowd were rubbing their eyes in disbelief and that was further heightened with a fourth FC goal in the 37th minute. Jon Ison was the catalyst, the defender firing a laser-like cross into the penalty area where Alex Castro slipped his marker to loop a beautiful header over the stranded Shepherd and into the net.

Adam Spaleta, who would be awarded the Walter Valeri medal as man of the match, turned provider again on the cusp of half-time, collecting a pass over the top of the flat Blue Devils defence and squar- ing a pass to the unmarked Gapare who had the easiest of tasks to tap into the empty net for a half- time score of 5-0. It was perhaps inevitable that the second half would not quite live up the incredible scenes of the first but the crowd remained and the supporters were treated to what was, arguably, the goal of the game in the 63rd minute.

Adam Spaleta received a pass 35 metres from goal and unleashed an exocet of a shot that thundered past Shepherd and into the top corner of the net that was left shaking on its moorings by the sheer velocity of a quite stunning strike. Incredibly the same player hit an even harder shot ten minutes later that crashed off the underside of the bar, and seemingly crossed the line, only to be judged to have bounced clear by the match officials. With the game meandering towards it’s inevitable conclusion Ison and Belconnen substitute Tai Smith were sent off for their part in a melee that threatened to spiral out of control, but it didn’t take the gloss of a brilliant display by Canberra FC who were worthy champions.

YEOMAN-DALE TREBLE SEALS CUP VICTORY

Sunday 19th September 2010 Hawker Football Centre Woden Valley 5 (Erin Frewin 2’, Yeoman-Dale 23’, 56’. 88’ (pen), Ashleigh Palombi 29’) Belwest Foxes 3 (Snez Veljanovska 30’, Cian Maciejewski 45’, Hope Wilkins 73’)

Referee: Sam Ockerby Crowd: 935 Murray Medal: Georgia Yeoman-Dale

A hat-trick from speedy striker Georgia Yeoman-Dale led Woden Valley to a sensational 5-3 victory over the Belwest Foxes in The Tradies Women’s Premier League Grand Final at Hawker Football Centre on a sunny spring afternoon. The pace of Yeoman-Dale was too much for the Foxes defence to cope with and the feisty young forward was at the top of her game and could have gone home with six goals to her name following several decent chances that were spurned. Not that it mattered to the Julie Murray Medal winner who was clinical when needed.

It took Woden less than two minutes to signal their intent, taking the lead in an unusual way. A shot from distance took a huge deflection and, after ‘keeper Melanie Luksa did well to readjust to claim the ball, it spilled lose for Erin Frewin to bundle into the net from close range. The dream start got even better in the 23rd minute when Yeoman-Dale reacted quickest to Isabella Boag-Taylor’s through ball, rode a challenge from a defender and skipped past Luksa to roll the ball into the empty net for a silky goal.

Incredibly by the half-hour mark the underdogs were 3-0 ahead. Once more Yeoman-Dale was to the fore racing onto a pass, rounding Luksa out wide and crossing to an unmarked Ashleigh Palombi who headed into the almost gaping goal.

The Foxes aren’t the champion team they are for nothing though and they hit back almost immediately. Hope Wilkins burst clear and squared a pass for Snez Veljanovska to finish high into the top-corner of the net. Before half-time the deficit was reduced to 2-3 when a defensive lapse allowed Cian Maciejewski to get clear and clip the ball past the advancing Gill Raymond. The next goal would prove crucial and it was Woden who got it.

Inevitably, Yeoman-Dale was the pivot again, latching onto a Frewin goal kick that eluded everyone else to sprint clear of Hayley Buckingham, skip round Luksa and slide the ball into the open net to make the score 4-2. Just when it seemed that Woden had the game in the bag the Foxes responded again. Maciejewski hit a fierce drive towards goal that Raymond did well to parry before Wilkins reacted quickest to poke the ball home and put the match back into the balance.

Everything was up for grabs but it was Woden, and the brilliant Yeoman-Dale, who had the last word. The striker got clear of the Foxes defence yet again and in the process of rounding Luksa once more was felled by the Foxes custodian. Luksa saw red for the challenge and Yeoman-Dale dusted herself off to slot the resultant penalty, claim the match ball, and make sure that Woden would claim the 2010 Tradies Women’s Premier League crown at the end of an epic battle played in front of an appreciative crowd.

WODEN VALLEY STORM TO PATHWAY WIN WHILST TUGGIES TAKE UNDER-18 THRILLER AND OLYMPIC FLY HIGH IN UNDER-16

Premier Pathway League Saturday 18th September 2010 McKellar Park, Belconnen Soccer Centre Woden Valley 4 (Chris Ruiz, Lachlan Nichols, Bensah Afiabo, Gary Alexander) Belconnen United 1 (Josh Sands) Referee: Luke Withell Woden Valley were simply too strong for Belconnen United in the Premier Pathway League Grand Final running out comprehensive 4-1 winners in an exciting match at McKellar Park. The Valley side were 2-0 up by the interval thanks to a goal from skipper Chris Ruiz on 16 minutes and a second from Lachlan Nichols just after the half-hour mark. A third goal, bagged on 61 minutes by forward Bensah Afiabo had Woden in complete control of the match with the outclassed Blue Devils simply chasing shadows for much of the afternoon. They did give the home supporters something to cheer about though seven minutes after the third Woden goal when Josh Sands converted to give them some hope, but that was swiftly extinguished with fifteen minutes remaining when Gary Alexander finished the match off once and for all with a fourth Woden goal.

Premier League under-18 Saturday 18th September 2010 McKellar Park, Belconnen Soccer Centre Tuggeranong United 3 (Andrew Lawrence (2), Sam Ramey) Woden Valley 2 (Jonathan Kipnis, Adrian Canizares) Referee: Matt Rynne Tuggeranong United scored three times in the final seventeen minutes of the match, coming from 0-2 down, to stun Woden Valley in the Premier League under-18 competition. Woden had looked set fair for the trophy when they roared into a two-goal advantage thanks to goals from Jonathan Kipnis and Adrian Canizares with United left floundering. However, the dismissal of the influential Mathew Kocic midway through the second stanza swung the match back in favour of Tuggeranong. United still had plenty to do though and were indebted to captain Andrew Lawrence for getting them back into the match in the 73rd minute. Lawrence, who was superb in midfield throughout, played a part in the build-up to the equaliser as well, struck by Sam Ramey six minutes from time. Barely two minutes later the comeback was complete when Lawrence added his second to send the United support wild.

Premier League under-16 Saturday 18th September 2010 McKellar Park, Belconnen Soccer Centre Canberra Olympic 4 (Yusuf Kamara (2), Danny Brice, Michael Bornholt) Woden Valley 2 (Darcy Crosthwaite, Petar Varga) Referee: Alex McConachie Canberra Olympic may have ended the game with nine men, following the late dismissals of Matthew Murcutt and Josh Ratnam-Johnson, but they had already done enough to claim the under-16 crown with a 4-2 win over Woden Valley. The Olympic team showed plenty of spirit and determination to see off the fancied Woden Valley side who, despite goals from Darcy Crosthwaite and Petar Varga, were second best on the day. Yusuf Kamara starred for Olympic with a brace of goals whilst Danny Brice and Michael Bornholt, a regular supplier of goals throughout the 2010 season, added further gloss to the final score. It was a deserved win for Olympic who had beaten the minor premiers, Canberra FC, in the Major semi-final to advance to the Grand Final stage after ending the season in second place.

Belwest Foxes edged out Belconnen United in a taut encounter at Hawker Football Centre to claim the Premier League Reserves title. A solitary goal, scored in the second half by Gemma Matheson, proved the difference between two evenly matched teams. Earlier, the Blue Devils Westfield W-League goalkeeper Jocelyn Mara had to be on top form to deny the Foxes with Sam Price in good form whilst at the other end Belwest custodian Melanie Luksa was well protected by a solid back four that was able to nullify the threat of Golden Boot Sarah Tutt. Belconnen had qualified for the final from fourth place on the ladder whilst Belwest Foxes had ended the regular season in second place.

Premier League under-18 Sunday 19th September 2010 Hawker Football Centre Belconnen United 5 (Tahlia Backhouse (2), Brittany Smale (2), Brittany Tully) Woden Valley 2 (Meg McLaughlin (2)) Referee: Nunzio Rinaudo

Doubles to Tahlia Backhouse and Brittany Smale were the highlight of a goal-fest as Belconnen United defeated Woden Valley 5-2 in the under-18 Premier League Grand Final. The Blue Devils took an early lead through a 4th minute Brittany Tully strike before Meg McLaughlin, Woden’s best player on the day, leveled the scores only three minutes later. Backhouse and Smale made it 3-1 to Belconnen at the interval and, despite Woden’s best efforts to force their way back into an entertaining match, the Blue Devils ran away with the match in the second stanza. Backhouse and Smale added their second goals, to take the score to 5-1, before a brilliant second from McLaughlin reduced the arrears, but that strike proved little consolation in the end as Belconnen, who were undefeated throughout the regular season, ran out worthy winners.

May 2011 PREVIEW Another season brings another change in management at the Blue Devils Sun 1 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor as the departure of Scott Conlon from the Head Coach hot seat paves Sun 8 Cooma Tigers @ McKellar Park the way for the return of former boss Steve Forshaw, and maybe the return of the lucky Akubra with it! Conlon’s tenure ended in the most Sun 15 Canberra FC @ ignominious of ways as Belconnen were taught a football lesson on their Sat 21 Monaro Panthers @ McKellar Park own field in the Grand Final with age-old foes Canberra FC romping to a Sat 28 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 6-0 victory. That Belconnen also lost, on penalties, to Goulburn Strikers in the Federation Cup meant that there would be no silverware at June McKellar Park last season. But this squad still has plenty of talent and are Sun 5 Woden Valley @ McKellar Park more than likely to be top level contenders for honours again in 2011. The basis of last season’s team is still around with veterans Matt Valeri Sun 12 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon and Danny Macor still lacing up the boots for the cause. A plethora of Sat 18 Canberra City @ McKellar Park young talent has emerged from the Blue Devils junior ranks to push the older players for a start and this will no doubt please Forshaw as compe- Sun 26 Bye tition for places is liable to be a good thing. How they recover from the July disappointment of the denouement of 2010 could have a major bearing on how their season pans out, but you can be sure that under the astute Sun 3 Woden Valley @ guidance of Forshaw they will be amply prepared for the challenges that Sat 9 Cooma Tigers @ Nijong Oval lay ahead. The Head Coach is tempering optimism though with some cautionary words. “Although this is a transition year we would hope to Sun 17 Canberra FC @ McKellar Park be competitive in all the games we play and will be looking toward a top Sun 24 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium four finish,” Forshaw said. “We have introduced some new players, some youth and retained have some experience in the squad, and how Sun 31 Tuggeranong United @ McKellar Park successful we are will depend on how well we can get the balance right August and how quickly the disparate parts gel together,” he added. With new signing Nicky Rogers adding punch up front and the acquisition of NIKE Sun 7 Canberra Olympic @ McKellar Park Chance Academy winner Tom Rogic anything is possible. April 2011 PREVIEW Sat 30 Cooma Tigers @ Nijong Oval The question at Canberra City is whether they can repeat their heroics of 2010 and secure finals football for the second year in succession. Last May season began with little expectation on Pat Caggiano and his young team Sun 8 Canberra FC @ Hawker FC but, spurred on by the goals of off-season recruit Misko Naumoski, City strung together a series of excellent performances and settled into the Sat 14 Monaro Panthers @ Hawker FC last available finals spot in fourth place. From there they were unlucky to Sun 22 Tuggeranong United @ Hawker FC fall 1-2 to a Cooma Tigers team that were fired up on their return to the Sun 29 Woden Valley @ Woden Park top-flight, thus ending City’s season prematurely. Blessed with some outstanding talents including the mercurial genius of Futsalroo interna- June tional Pat Ross-Magee, City have enough in their locker to surprise many Sun 5 Goulburn Strikers @ Hawker FC of the traditional pre-season favourites. Defensively their numbers are not quite so impressive though and finding a solution to the age-old Sun 12 Bye problem of a rock-solid centre-back pairing on which to build any Sat 18 Belconnen United @ McKellar Park success is surely the number one priority for the City management as the new campaign approaches. Injuries derailed their progress at crucial Sat 25 Canberra Olympic @ Hawker FC times during the 2010 campaign and keeping a fit and healthy squad is July quite possibly up their with finding a defensive solution on Caggiano’s pre-season agenda. “We aim to be competitive in all of our matches and Sun 3 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon improve on week to week results from 2010,” Head Coach Caggiano Sun 10 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium commented. Their only significant loss from the squad that played some attractive, fluent football last term is holding midfielder Stuart Lacey. Sun 17 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium And, while there hasn’t been a huge influx of ‘name’ players for 2011 Sat 23 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 Caggiano has recruited wisely particularly from the lower leagues. May 2011 PREVIEW It was business as usual at Deakin Stadium last season with the perennial Sun 1 Goulburn Strikers @ Deakin Stadium title challengers packing in three more trophies into their ever growing Sun 8 Canberra City @ Hawker FC trophy cabinet. In short whatever could be won was won as Canberra FC claimed the Federation Cup, coming from 0-2 down in the process, and Sun 15 Belconnen United @ Deakin Stadium League Championship before annihilating old foes Belconnen United 6-0 Sun 22 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor in the Grand Final—on the Blue Devils own patch! And while many Sun 29 Cooma Tigers @ Deakin Stadium would be predicting a similar success story for new head honcho Rob Graham in 2011, the new coach has an unforgiving task of following up June two successive trebles. The loss of the talismanic Alex Castro to Cooma Sun 5 Bye Tigers is a big blow but some clever off-season recruiting may offset the departure of the player who scored 18 goals in 2010. A broken leg Sun 12 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium sustained in a pre-season tournament in Queensland will keep two-goal Sun 19 Tuggeranong Utd @ Deakin Stadium Grand Final scorer Danai Gapare sidelined for the entire campaign with his directness sure to be missed. For all that though Canberra FC will still Sun 26 Woden Valley @ Woden Park be the team to beat this season. From the backline forward they possess July a squad that is the envy of the rest of the competition and will take some knocking off their proud pedestal. “As a club we always have high Sun 3 Bye expectations,” Graham commented. “Obviously we’ll have to wait and Sun 10 Canberra City @ Deakin Stadium see how we go but if we don’t do well we can’t blame it on re-building as we have only lost one player. We still have Adam Spaleta, who is a Sun 17 Belconnen United @ McKellar Park standout all the time, and top players like Ian Graham, Josip Jadric and Sun 24 Canberra Olympic @ Deakin Ivan Pavlak. 2011 PREVIEW May Predicting what you are going to get out of a Canberra Olympic Premier Sun 1 Belconnen United @ O’Connor League team is a little like picking the winning lottery numbers— Sun 8 Bye sometimes you just pick and hope! Every season Olympic enter the competition amongst the favourites to progress to the latter stages and, Sun 15 Cooma Tigers @ Nijong Oval more often than not in recent years, they have flattered to deceive. Last Sun 22 Canberra FC @ O’Connor season was a case in point with a terrific 3-1 win over Canberra FC offset by a number of poor performances that culminated in dropped points Sun 29 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium and a final Premier League position of sixth. The loss of Coach Ian Hey- June wood shortly after their 0-4 federation Cup loss to Belconnen United heralded the arrival of ACT Rockets Coach Dean Ugrinic and the amiable Sun 5 Tuggeranong United @ O’Connor Ugrinic will be looking forward to getting a full pre-season with his Sun 12 Woden Valley @ Woden Park charges under his belt. The midfield qualities of Englishman Andrew Ross was a huge bonus to Olympic last season with the tenacity and vision of Sun 19 Goulburn Strikers @ O’Connor the playmaker very much in evidence throughout the season. If Ross can Sat 25 Canberra City @ Hawker FC curb his sometimes volatile temper his impact can push Olympic to finals football and possibly even further. A club statement regarding the 2011 July campaign read: “After the departure of a number of key players, Dean Sat 2 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 Ugrinic and his coaching staff have invested heavily in youth and the promotion of those players within the club. April 2011 PREVIEW Sat 30 Canberra City @ Nijong Oval Cooma Tigers came back into the Premier League fold in 2010 with all guns blazing and were ultimately only ninety minutes away from a place May in the Grand Final. A 1-2 loss to Belconnen United in the Preliminary Sun 8 Belconnen United @ McKellar Park Final put paid to the Tigers hopes of repeating their 2006 title winning heroics but not before the Blue Devils had been given an almighty fright. Sun 15 Canberra Olympic @ Nijong Oval This season promises even more from the Cooma based team who, Sun 22 Bye while retaining the core of the team that performed superbly in the Sun 29 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium 2010 season, have signed the exquisite talents of the former Canberra Cosmos midfielder Alex Castro. Castro, arguably the most gifted player in June the entire Premier League structure, was in inspirational form for Sun 5 Monaro Panthers @ Nijong Oval Canberra FC last season guiding his former club to an historic second treble with some outrageous performances. His vision, skill and ability to Sat 11 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 pop up with the vital goal when required could be just what the Tigers Sun 19 Woden Valley @ Nijong Oval need to push them that little bit further and into the Grand Final. When Castro was last with Cooma the Tigers won the Grand Final. A case of Sun 26 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon history repeating maybe? On the downside though is the loss of the July talents of Cristobal Soza with the exceptional Chilean defender offering supporters a fleeting glimpse of his quality last term before continuing Sun 3 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium his round the world odyssey and twin strikers Scott Barsley and Daniel Sat 9 Belconnen United @ Nijong Oval Gecic. That leaves a lot of pressure of main front men Jair Wilk and Serdan Bircan to step up to the plate in terms of adding more goals to Sun 17 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor the pot then they did last season, but they undoubtedly have the talent Sun 24 Bye and ability to do just that. In goal Gaby Wilk can call upon either Rade Kosanovic or Frank Bangweni with both stoppers having a wealth of Sun 31 Canberra FC @ Nijong Oval experience as top-flight custodians to call upon. 2011 PREVIEW May In many ways it would seem that Goulburn Strikers are in almost exactly Sun 1 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium the same position that Tuggeranong United found themselves twelve Sat 7 Monaro Panthers @ Cookbundoon months ago. A squad bereft of a raft of top-shelf players, including the Aliffi brothers, Daniel and Andrew, flying winger Sam Taylor and top- Sun 15 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 scorer Brody Willis have also waved goodbye to erstwhile Coach Carlo Sun 22 Woden Valley @ Cookbundoon Aliffi. In his place steps Gerry Doran who has inherited a squad thin on numbers and, perhaps more vitally, thin on experience. If anything Sun 29 Bye though the Strikers can at least set their stall out for the future now by June investing their time and effort into gelling this group of teenage starlets into a team that could shake the Premier League. As usual the Strikers Sun 5 Canberra City @ Hawker FC are liable to be tough to beat on their own pitch at Cookbundoon. Their Sun 12 Belconnen United @ Cookbundoon home form in 2010 was generally good and if they can get some early results on the board at home then the possibility of some surprise points Sun 19 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor should not be discounted. Any sort of injury jinx though, such as the one Sun 26 Cooma Tigers @ Cookbundoon that cursed the latter stages of their Premier League quest last season, is likely to be even more undesirable with numbers so thin on the ground. July Early pre-season results saw the Strikers beaten 1-4 by Tuggeranong Sun 3 Canberra City @ Cookbundoon United at Kambah with the United youngsters showing the Goulburn set- up what can be achieved with time and a little patience. A quick phone Sun 10 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium call to Tuggeranong Coach Darren Viskovich will tell Doran exactly what Sat 16 Tuggeranong United @ Cookbundoon to expect early on but perseverance, and a modicum of good fortune, Sun 24 Woden Valley @ Woden Park could help the Strikers prove the naysayers wrong. Whilst their pre- season loop Federation Cup campaign was a bit of a disaster in terms of Sun 31 Bye results the experience gained by the Strikers players could prove to be August invaluable. At the very least they will now be aware of what it takes to play in the Rock Premier League. Some of the talent in the squad is Sat 6 Canberra FC @ Cookbundoon unquestionably good but whether it’s enough remains to be seen. 2011 PREVIEW May Things look particularly rosy in the Monaro Panthers garden right now. A Sun 1 Woden Valley @ Riverside Stadium more than acceptable fourth placed finish on the 2010 Premier League Sat 7 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon ladder had been followed by some aggressive recruitment to add to the core of the squad that performed so well on their return to ACT Premier Sat 14 Canberra City @ Hawker FC League action last season. A summer raid on Tuggeranong United has Sat 21 Belconnen United @ McKellar Park reaped dividends with exciting strike-duo Matt Menser and Mark Shields added to the Panthers attacking stocks with Menser perhaps supplying Sun 29 Canberra Olympic @ Riverside that added ’x-factor’ to help John Bull’s side over the line in the big June games. The livewire Menser’s link with goal-machine Goran Veljanovski should prove to be exciting for the supporters at the Riverside Stadium Sun 5 Cooma Tigers @ Nijong Oval and could surprise some of the bigger names in the competition. At the Sun 12 Canberra FC @ Riverside Stadium back the solid and dependable Geoff Howarth will line-up in front of former Tuggeranong shot-stopper Matt McDonald or Jason Denham if Sun 19 Bye last season’s regular ‘keeper can shake off a niggling injury sustained in Sun 26 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 pre-season. Strength in depth was an issue for the Panthers at times in 2010 and despite the signing of new players it would seem, on paper at July least, that this could again be a cause for concern in 2011. However, Bull Sun 3 Cooma Tigers @ Riverside Stadium has enough experience and tactical nous to help overcome this apparent deficiency through clever deployment of the resources at his disposal. Sun 10 Goulburn Strikers @ Riverside The confidence instilled in the team by the likes of David Baillie, when on Sun 17 Canberra City @ Riverside Stadium form, cannot be under-estimated with the giant centre-back a hugely Sun 24 Belconnen United @ Riverside physical presence in the Panthers rearguard. Experienced midfielder Justin Selkirk will again be pivotal for the Panthers and the signing of Sun 31 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor lively forward Stewart Jones looks like a good piece of recruitment with August Jones netting three goals in his opening two matches for the club during the loop Federation Cup. Juggling this pack of players and finding their Sun 7 Woden Valley @ Woden Park best formation is likely to be Bull’s biggest challenge. May 2011 PREVIEW Twelve months ago things looked fairly grim from a Tuggeranong United Sun 1 Bye viewpoint. Heading into the campaign with a largely untried group of Sun 8 Woden Valley @ Woden Park youngsters and suffering heavy defeats in their opening matches to Canberra FC and Monaro Panthers. However, a year later things could Sun 15 Goulburn Strikers @ Kambah 2-1 hardly be more different. A stunning recovery in mid-season saw United Sun 22 Canberra City @ Hawker FC emerge with some more than creditable results. A 2-1 win away to Sat 28 Belconnen United @ Kambah 2-1 Belconnen United was followed by a 2-2 home draw with treble winners Canberra FC. The turn around saw Coach Darren Viskovich named as June Premier League Coach of the Year and sees United heading into 2011 full Sun 5 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor of optimism. The valley side have lost a couple of senior players during the off-season with stalwart Jeremy Butler, goalkeeper Matt McDonald Sat 11 Cooma Tigers @ Kambah 2-1 and twin strike threats Mark Shields and Matt Menser having moved on Sun 19 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium to pastures new. There remains the core of the young side that cruised home with a wet sail last term though with midfield lynchpin Tim Sun 26 Monaro Panthers @ Kambah 2-1 Stewart a stand-out. Young tyros Martin Corujo and Daniel Beaumont July should build upon excellent maiden top-flight campaigns with Alex Weber showing increasing signs of maturity up front. Chris Ruiz, from Sat 2 Canberra Olympic @ Kambah 2-1 Woden Valley, Dom De Salis, a ball-playing midfielder and the highly Sun 10 Woden Valley @ Kambah 2-1 promising Andrew Lawrence, who scored a double to help the under-18 team to their title last season should see plenty of game time. This might Sat 16 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon not be a title-winning championship team, but it will certainly be very Sat 23 Canberra City@ Kambah 2-1 competitive. “Hopefully we can build on the second round success of 2010 and be competitive from the opening game. THE SQUAD Bensah Afiabo, Hector Alamos, Evan Alexandrow-Ridley, Jeremy Butler, Aaron Cashman, Paul Gagetti, Cameron Gordon, Ben Harrington, Simon Hinde, Tom Hirst, Micah Johnson, Andrew Kiley, Samale Mohamed, Nick Nelson (GK), Lachlan Nichols, Alex Oloriegbe, Ben Pagett, Daniel Pekevski, Jack Pettit, Edan Wheeldon, Tim Womack, Muad Zwed, Kehnan Walsh ARRIVALS: Hector Alamos (Cooma Tigers), Evan Alexandrow-Ridley (ANU FC), Jeremy Butler (Tuggeranong United), Aaron Cashman (Tuggeranong United), Ben Harrington (Belconnen United), Micah Johnson (USA), Nick Nelson, Alex Oloriegbe (Mozambique), Daniel Pekevski (Monaro Panthers), Edan Wheeldon (Goulburn Strikers), Tim Womack (ANU FC) DEPARTURES: Kole Aitken, Lukas Cole, Darryl Hall, Jordyn Nayna, Carlos Salazar, Ayrton Solar

May 2011 PREVIEW Last season promised much for Woden Valley FC with their overseas Sun 1 Monaro Panthers @ Riverside Stadium imports proving to be a major success and playing a big part in pushing Sun 8 Tuggeranong Utd @ Woden Park the Valley club further along the path towards success. This season though has seen a different approach from Coach Pat McCann. The loss Sun 15 Bye of his towering English centre-back Darryl Hall has been off-set a little by Sun 22 Goulburn Strikers @ Cookbundoon the surprise acquisition of Tuggeranong stalwart Jeremy Butler. Anyone Sun 29 Canberra City @ Woden Park expecting similar styles though will be disappointed as Hall’s physical prowess and tough-as-teak tackling is somewhat different than the game June played by the veteran Butler. Nevertheless, what Butler does possess is a Sun 5 Belconnen United @ McKellar Park vast knowledge of the local game coupled with being an expert communicator and should help the younger Woden players to continue Sun 12 Canberra Olympic @ Woden Park their development. Optimism is high at Woden Valley and with a solid Sun 19 Cooma Tigers @ Nijong Oval off-field support group and a thriving local junior section the club should have all the attributes required to succeed. Early indications are that the Sun 26 Canberra FC @ Woden Park squad that McCann has put together for the 2011 season is a more July mature and composed one than last season’s with a strong defence and midfield the key to their possible success in 2011. Woden’s Achilles heel Sun 3 Belconnen United @ Woden Park may just prove to be up front where, despite the raw pace and skill of Sun 10 Tuggeranong United @ Kambah 2-1 newcomer Alex Oloriegbe, a lack of an out-and-out goalscorer may prove critical. McCann is nothing if not industrious though so don’t bet Sun 17 Bye on him not rectifying that problem before kick off against Monaro Sun 24 Goulburn Strikers @ Woden Park Panthers at the Riverside Stadium on Sunday 1st May. Woden spokes- man Mike Swan commented: “We have recruited well in the off-season Sat 30 Canberra City @ Hawker FC including former Australian junior representative Ben Harrington. Paul August Gagetti returns after injury and will be joined in the backline by the equally experienced Jeremy Butler. This is a team that Woden Valley FC Sun 7 Monaro Panthers @ Woden Park believes capable of challenging for a top four berth in Season 2011.” Sun 14 Canberra Olympic @ O’Connor HONOURS BOARD Sun 21 Cooma Tigers @ Woden Park League Champions: None Sun 28 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium Grand Final Winners: None Federation Cup Winners: None

ANU Womens FC Coach: Linda Uhlmann 2010: ACT Premier League— 7th, Federation Cup—3rd in Pool A THE SQUAD Megan Asquith, Holly Burke, Lara Cleaver, Georgia Davis, Leanne Davis (gk), Sarah Everett, Meaghan Gidley, Emma Hampton, Ashley Miller, Emily Nicola, Rebecca Winbom, Victoria Robinson-Conlon (c), Cassie Schilg, Bronwyn Tulloh, Carrie Westphal ARRIVALS: Megan Asquith (), Emma Hampton (Albury), Ashley Miller (returns from USA)

DEPARTURES: Kate Grarock (Woden), Emma April Carters, Hannah Brydie-Watson, Jennifer Bisset Sun 3 Woden Valley @ Woden Park (Canberra FC), Aniek Schepens (Netherlands) Sun 10 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium 2011 PREVIEW Sun 17 Gungahlin Utd @ ANU Willows 1 A new season brings with it renewed optimism for ANU WFC after May what was, to all extents and purposes, a tough year in 2010. Finishing seventh in the eight team competition, with only the Sun 1 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed hapless Brindabella Blues beneath them on the final ladder, tells Sun 8 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 1 its own story and is possibly best forgotten. 2011 however sees a Sun 15 Tuggeranong U @ ANU Willows 1 new coach in Linda Uhlmann and a chance for the students to carry on some of the good form that they showed in patches Sun 22 Belconnen United @ McKellar throughout last season. The form and fitness of their goalkeeper, Sun 29 Woden Valley @ ANU Willows 1 Leeane Davis, is absolutely crucial to any success they may June achieve this term and her absence from the team for the opening matches of the pre-season loop Federation Cup was noticeable Sun 5 Canberra FC @ ANU Willows 1 despite the very best endeavours of stand-in stopper Lara Cleaver. Sun 12 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 Going forward the impressive Emily Nicola and Sarah Everett Sun 19 Belwest Foxes @ ANU Willows 1 seem the most likely source of goals with the former displaying plenty of the qualities that has earned her the nickname of Sun 26 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 1 ‘psycho’ amongst her team mates. Everett’s four-goal haul against July Tuggeranong meanwhile was one of the highlights of the three Sun 3 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 matches ANU WFC played in the competition. Up front the tall, mobile, Helen Baxendale looks like a good find with her physical Sun 17 Belconnen Utd @ ANU Willows 1 presence likely to see the students retain plenty of possession Sun 24 Woden Valley @ ANU Willows 1 during matches, a key to any quality side. Uhlmann is hoping for a Sun 31 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium better performance in 2011 than last year. “We aim to build on August the foundation of the last few seasons by performing even more consistently,“ she said. “To achieve this we will be placing higher Sun 7 Gungahlin Utd @ ANU Willows 1 expectations on players to learn and apply new tactics whilst Sun 14 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed keeping one eye on the ANU WFC club philosophy of player development, participation, and enjoyment. Ideally the result of Sun 21 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 1 this hard work would see ANU WFC playing to earn a finals berth Sun 28 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 at the end of the season.” A tough opening match of the year September against Woden will certainly be a testing introduction. Belconnen United Women’s Football Club Coach: Antoni Jagarinec 2010: ACT Premier League—3rd, Semi- Finals (lost to Woden Valley 1-4), Federation Cup—Semi-Finals (lost to Woden Valley 1-3) THE SQUAD Jocelyn Mara, Natasha Ackland, Lauren Keir, Alison Lound, Amy Spence, Caitlin Munoz, Snez Veljanovska, Michelle Thompson, Katie Woodman, Sabrina Spinapolice, Talia Backhouse, Jess McEwan, Ilahna Aitchison, Maja Blasch, Peita-Claire Fothergill, Amy Wilson, Clare Munro ARRIVALS: Amy Wilson, Peita-Claire Forthergill

DEPARTURES: None known at time of April going to press Sun 3 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium Sun 10 Gungahlin Utd @ McKellar Park 2011 PREVIEW Sun 17 Belwest Foxes @ McKellar Park Last season’s ‘nearly’ team Belconnen United will be eager to tale May a step up in 2011 and move pass the semi-final stages and onto the big stage that they so nearly graced last time out. Semi-final Sun 1 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 1 defeats in both the 2010 Federation Cup and Premier League is Sun 8 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 nothing to be sniffed at but Belconnen, under the guidance of Sun 15 Woden Valley @ McKellar Park smart coach Antoni Jagarinec, are well aware that they are so close to landing that elusive silverware. Last season’s challenge Sun 22 ANU WFC @ McKellar Park was largely based on the back of a league-high 33 goals from Sun 29 Canberra FC @ McKellar Park Matildas’ striker Caitlin Munoz but with the 2011 FIFA World Cup June looming large on the horizon her expert talents may well be absent for the majority of the campaign. In her stead Jagarinec Sun 5 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 has made two wily signings in luring the hugely influential Amy Sun 12 Belwest Foxes @ McKellar Park Wilson, who was Canberra United assistant coach in 2010/11, and Sun 19 Weston Creek @ McKellar Park Peita-Claire Fothergill out of retirement and back onto the sporting fields of Canberra. Their experience is likely to be crucial Sun 26 Tuggeranong U @ McKellar Park in helping to guide a clutch of extremely promising youngsters July through what is surely to be an arduous league season. That batch Sun 3 Woden Valley @ Kaleen Enclosed of youngsters includes the highly promising Talia Backhouse and Lauren Keir, who made the breakthrough to the senior squad mid- Sun 17 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 way through the 2010 season. Outside of these talented squad Sun 24 Canberra FC @ McKellar Park members such as ACT Futsal representative Sabrina Spinapolice Sun 31 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 and midfielder Michelle Thompson add depth to what is looking like a title challenging line-up. The performance of goalkeeper August Jocelyn Mara is also crucial and the Canberra United back-up Sun 7 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed stopper was in sensational form as the Blue Devils laid claim to Sun 14 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 1 the loop Federation Cup in pre-season, defeating Woden Valley 3- 1 on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Mara made a series of excellent Sun 21 Tuggeranong U @ McKellar Park stops during the match and followed that with two sensational Sun 28 Woden Valley @ Woden Park saves in the shoot-out to help Belconnen to the silverware. If they September can continue in the same vein of form, then more may follow. Sun 4 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1

Belwest Foxes Women’s Football Club Coach: Pat Mills 2010: ACT Premier League—1st, Grand Final (lost to Woden 3-5), Federation Cup—Winners (defeated Woden Valley 5-1) THE SQUAD Vanessa Burdett , Sofia Merkoureas, Hayley Buckingham, Julia Hoy, Kate Walker, Tahlia Stanley, Katrina Staniforth, Kim Crocker, Katie Allen, Stephanie Trimble, Sarah Cox, Emma Beaumont, Clare Hill, Aniko Berguno, Erika Pennyfield, Anna Bennett, Holly Trimble, Gemma Matheson ARRIVALS: Katie Allen (Tuggeranong United)

DEPARTURES: Cian Maciejewski (sabbatical), April Snez Veljanovska (Belconnen United), Melanie Luksa (retired) Sun 3 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 1 Sun 10 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kaleen Enc. 2011 PREVIEW Sun 17 Belconnen Utd @ McKellar Park It’s going to be an interesting season for the Belwest Foxes in May 2011. Far from the free-scoring side that rampaged across the fields of Canberra and looked likely to win everything put before Sun 1 ANU WFC @ Kaleen Enclosed them last season, before suffering Grand Final disappointment at Sun 8 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium the hands of arch-rivals Woden Valley, this time it may well be Sun 15 Gungahlin Utd @ Kaleen Enclosed different. The loss of several key players is going to make this Foxes team seem more vulnerable then at any stage in the last Sun 22 Woden Valley @ Woden Park four years. Leading scorers and Westfield W-League regulars Cian Sun 29 Weston Creek @ Kaleen Enclosed Maciejewski of Canberra United and Snez Veljanovska who played June for Melbourne Victory have both moved on and with young tyro Hope Wilkins sidelined with a long-term injury the glut of goals Sun 5 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 that seemingly followed wherever Belwest played is likely to be Sun 12 Belconnen Utd @ McKellar Park stymied. At the other end the loss of goalkeeper Melanie Luksa, Sun 19 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 complimented as the best goalkeeper in the competition by Woden Valley head coach Ed Hollis, is another major blow and Sun 26 Canberra FC @ Kaleen Enclosed leaves a vacancy that needs to be filled by a reliable replacement. July The loop Federation Cup certainly proved that for Mills with his Sun 3 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 usual all-conquering team ending the group stages in last place in their Pool after gaining draws with Canberra FC and Weston Creek Sun 17 Woden Valley @ Kaleen Enclosed and losing 0-5 to Belconnen United, teams they dealt with in Sun 24 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 2 some comfort last term. But all is not doom and gloom at the Sun 31 Tuggeranong U @ Kaleen Enc. Foxes. They do in fact possess some incredibly talented young players in their squad for the 2011 Tradies Women’s Premier August League campaign with Aniko Berguno in particular catching the Sun 7 Belconnen Utd @ Kaleen Enclosed eye in the pre-season competition. Experienced campaigner Sun 14 ANU WFC @ Kaleen Enclosed Vanessa Burdett takes over in goal, where she can command the field of play with her vocal presence, and erstwhile defender Sun 21 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium Emma Beaumont returns to the fray having missed much of last Sun 28 Gungahlin Utd @ Kaleen Enclosed season through an unfortunate leg break. Calling on all his vast September knowledge of the women’s game is vital for Mills in 2011. Sun 4 Woden Valley @ Woden Park

Canberra FC Women’s Coach: Doug Penny 2010: ACT Premier League— 5th, Federation Cup—3rd in Pool A THE SQUAD Monique Solar , Grace Gill, Ashlea Bryant, Ashleigh Sykes , Alice Churchill, Regan Hart, Sam Venables, Connie Kanaridis. Jennifer Bisset, Tahlia Davidson, Amy Dunn, Emily Carnevale, Erin Clout, Georgia Ghirardello, Georgina Volk, Rhianna Goldstein ARRIVALS: Ashleigh Sykes, Jennifer Bisset (both Canberra United), Regan Hart, Rhianna Goldstein, Erin Clout (all Woden Valley), Georgina Volk (Queensland)

DEPARTURES: Nicole Somi (Weston Creek), April Sophie Kochinos (Woden Valley), Rebecca Sun 3 Belconnen Utd @ Deakin Stadium Kiting (USA), Aurelia Bullot Sun 10 ANU WFC @ Deakin Stadium 2011 PREVIEW Sun 17 Woden Valley @ Woden Park A new year sees a new look Canberra FC, once more under the May tutelage of Doug Penny. The culmination of the 2010 season left a blot on Canberra FC’s otherwise decent campaign in which they Sun 1 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 finished just outside of the Finals reckoning in fifth place. Towards Sun 8 Belwest Foxes @ Deakin Stadium the end of the year apathy, as well as injury, struck the club and Sun 15 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 2 Penny was forced on more than one occasion to field under- strength teams and, even worse, sometimes a few less than the Sun 22 Tuggeranong U @ Deakin Stadium allocated eleven. Still, that seems to be well and truly behind Sun 29 Belconnen Utd @ McKellar Park them now as an array of new talent arrives at Deakin Stadium in June an effort to help the club break into the top four. Their pre-season loop Federation Cup journey was noticeable for a vast improve- Sun 5 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 ment on some of the performances they displayed last season. A Sun 12 Woden Valley @ Kaleen Enclosed creditable 1-3 loss to Belconnen United, after leading 1-0 at half- Sun 19 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 time, came on the back of two draws, 1-1 against the traditional powerhouse Belwest Foxes and 3-3 against Canberra FC. Critical Sun 26 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed to those results was the pace and finishing of Canberra United July striker Ashleigh Sykes who struck three times in as many matches. Sun 3 Weston Creek @ Hawker FC With Sykes on form there is a chance that Canberra FC could make the breakthrough into the top four, something that Head Sun 17 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 Coach Penny is aiming for. “We are aiming to play some consis- Sun 24 Belconnen Utd @ McKellar Park tent football, be as competitive as we can be and try to stay Sun 31 ANU WFC @ Deakin Stadium injury free,” he said. “Hopefully that will mean we will end up in August the top four at end of home and away series and get a finals place.” Canberra FC has lost Sophie Kochinos to Woden Valley and Sun 7 Woden Valley @ Deakin Stadium the experienced Nicole Somi to Weston Creek, but have offset Sun 14 Gungahlin Utd @ Hawker FC that with the recruitment of a trio of players from Woden, namely Erin Clout, Rhianna Goldstein and Regan Hart. The addition of the Sun 21 Belwest Foxes @ Deakin Stadium combative Canberra United midfielder Jennifer Bisset, who had a Sun 28 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 1 run with ANU WFC last season, is also a bonus and her prompting September in the centre of the park should help Canberra FC in their cause. Gungahlin United Women’s Football Club Coach: Bruce Green 2010: New club for Premier League (club fielded teams in under-18 and State League in Season 2010) THE SQUAD Haley Riley, Kiley Green, Malin Jornholt, Cassie Rankin, Laura Sofoulis, Joanne Lee, Brittany Tulley, Gabby Ciardullo, Grace Tosic, Caitlyn Taylor, Dianne Wilson, Olivia Gurney, Celia Brown, Monica Cerro ARRIVALS: Gungahlin United are new to the Tradies Women’s Premier League

April DEPARTURES: Gungahlin United are new to the Tradies Women’s Premier League Sun 3 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 Sun 10 Belconnen Utd @ McKellar Park 2011 PREVIEW Sun 17 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 The new kids on the block, and somewhat literally, are Gungahlin May United. Replacing Brindabella Blues, who arrived at a similar point in time last year full of hope and expectation only to fall short by Sun 1 Canberra FC @ Harrison 101 some way, Gungahlin arrive in The Tradies Women’s Premier Sun 8 Woden Valley @ Harrison 101 League with a squad that has plenty of potential and has shown Sun 15 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed already, in their outings in the loop Federation Cup that they may well be a force to be reckoned with. A stunning debut outing that Sun 22 Weston Creek @ Harrison 101 culminated in a 6-1 victory over Tuggeranong United raised a few Sun 29 Tuggeranong Utd @ Harrison 101 eyebrows and was followed by a 1-3 defeat to Woden Valley. June Whilst a defeat may seem a strange thing to dwell on it’s worth remembering that Woden are the Grand Final winners and have Sun 5 Belconnen United @ Harrison 101 been in brilliant form for the last few years. That a new side, like Sun 12 ANU WFC @ Harrison 101 Gungahlin, can push them to the limit is a credit to their coaching Sun 19 Canberra FC @ Harrison 101 staff and bodes well for 2011. They ended their cup run with a 2-1 win over ANU WFC further suggesting that they can pick up points Sun 26 Woden Valley @ Harrison 101 throughout the course of the year. One problem they may have is July a lack of strength in depth with the squad outside of the starting Sun 3 Belwest Foxes @ Harrison 101 sixteen looking a little thin. Midfield powerhouse Malin Jormholt looked to be their star recruit in the loop Federation Cup and her Sun 17 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 2 impact could have a big say on how Gungahlin perform. Further Sun 24 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 exciting talent is provided by Radford College student Celia Brown Sun 31 Belconnen United @ Harrison 101 and striker Brittany Tully who was amongst the goals throughout August last year for former club Belconenn United, banging in an incredi- ble forty goals in sixteen regular season matches to lay claim to Sun 7 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 the Golden Boot for the Premier League under-18 division. If Tully Sun 14 Canberra FC @ Hawker FC can replicate some of her strikes in the more rarefied atmosphere of the Tradies Women’s Premier League then Gungahlin could Sun 21 Woden Valley @ Hawker FC prove to be a potential banana skin for many of their more senior Sun 28 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed opposition. As coach Bruce Green commented , “the sky’s the September limit” for this outstanding group. Sun 4 Weston Creek @ Harrison 101

Tuggeranong United Women’s Football Club Coach: Adam Byrne 2010: ACT Premier League—6th, Federation Cup—Semi-Finals (lost to Belwest Foxes 0-7) THE SQUAD Emilie Adams, Sophie Black, Clare Carey, Kathryn Conroy, Alison Corujo, Sigourney Dunk, Nikki Harvey, Freyja Jacobsen, Laura Jennings, Alexandra Lawrence, Charlotte Lynch, Jennifer Malbon, Isabella McCormick, Katherine Mcfadyen, Caitlin Nye, Sian Parker, Jennifer Poehl (c), Nicola Roth, Annica Schoo, Brionie Thompson ARRIVALS: Nil

DEPARTURES: Katie Allan, Julietta Ibarra, April Natalie Lacey, Ashleigh Neall, Kathleen Sun 3 Gungahlin United @ Kambah 2-1 Rayment Sun 10 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed 2011 PREVIEW Sun 17 Weston Creek @ Kambah 2-1 A sixth placed finish in the Tradies Women’s Premier League last May season was seen as a satisfactory start to life in the top-flight for Tuggeranong United especially coming on the back of a place in Sun 1 Woden Valley @ Woden Park the semi-finals of the Federation Cup. However, twelve months Sun 8 Belconnen United @ Kambah 2-1 down the track and life doesn't appear quite as good at the south Sun 15 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 side club. A loop Federation Cup campaign that began with a 1-6 loss to Gungahlin United, continued with a 0-6 defeat to ANU Sun 22 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium WFC and ended with a 2-6 reverse to Woden Valley has left many Sun 29 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 believing that Season 2011 could be a tough one for new head June coach Adam Byrne who takes over the reins from caretaker boss Kieran Angel. The loss of several key players from last season’s Sun 5 Belwest Foxes @ Kambah 2-1 explosive squad, most notably ace goal-poacher and leading Sun 12 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 1 scorer Julie Ibarra has left Byrne’s team looking a little threadbare Sun 19 Woden Valley @ Kambah 2-1 across the park. Freyja Jacobsen appears to be left with the task of supplying the fire power that Ibarra did along with the arrival of Sun 26 Belconnen Utd @ McKellar Park the ultra-impressive Alex Lawrence. Katherine McFadyen was July another relative newcomer that shone in the pre-season cup with Sun 3 ANU WFC @ Kambah 2-1 her pace and mobility adding an extra dimension to United’s attacking forays. At the back the performances of new goalkeeper Sun 17 Canberra FC @ Kambah 2-1 Emilie Adams will be of the upmost importance to Byrne, as her Sun 24 Gungahlin United @ Kambah 2-1 ability to keep clean sheets along with the defensive colossus that Sun 31 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed is Kat Conroy, will likely have a huge impact on what kind of August season Tuggeranong have. “I'm expecting a promising season this year with a hard working squad and would like to improve on last Sun 7 Weston Creek @ Kambah 2-1 year and finish in the top four,“ new man Byrne said. “It will be Sun 14 Woden Valley @ Kambah 2-1 tough with a few quality Premier League players leaving but I think we have got good depth and we have some outstanding Sun 21 Belconnen Utd @ McKellar Park youth players to add to the already experienced Premier League Sun 28 ANU WFC @ Kambah 2-1 team.” A good start to the season is essential and a first up game September against Gungahlin United should offer some clues as to their year. Weston Creek Women’s Football Club Coach: Michelle Aurousseau 2010: ACT Premier League—4th, Semi- Finals (lost to Belwest Foxes 1-4), Federation Cup—3rd in Pool B

THE SQUAD Michelle Tifan, Nicole Somi, Amanda Aurousseau, Eliza Borucinski, Rochelle Borucinski, Laura Jones, Rachel Crittenden, Jessie Pritchard, Sarah Crittenden, Bec Collins, Becky Roche, Claire Stephens, Sophie Travis, Cash Dolan, Aleisha Tupper, Kearyn Ferguson, Kirsty Babington, Lauren Garrity, Sophie Burdon, Jenny Brew (TBC due to injury) ARRIVALS: Nicole Somi (Canberra FC), Eliza Borucinski

April DEPARTURES: Josie Lehoczky (injury), Korri Chaivannacoopt (injury), Jacinta Sun 3 Belwest Foxes @ ANU Willows 1 Holcroft (injury) Sun 10 Woden Valley @ Woden Park 2011 PREVIEW Sun 17 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 Another club to welcome on board a new coach for season 2011 May is Weston Creek who part ways with Robbie Mason after several Sun 1 Belconnen Utd @ ANU Willows 1 years of sterling service. In his stead arrives a former player in the Sun 8 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 form of Michelle Aurousseau who gets her first taste of top-flight coaching with this Weston Creek team. On paper it looks like Sun 15 Canberra FC @ ANU Willows 2 being a fairly strong outfit with plenty of experience to see it Sun 22 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 through the long winter months ahead of finals football. Whereas Sun 29 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed last season Weston sneaked into the finals in fourth, albeit fairly comfortably, the challenges this time around are likely to be more June onerous across the board. A lot will depend on the contribution of Sun 5 Woden Valley @ ANU Willows 2 the Crittenden sisters, Rachel and Sarah, who so often in the past Sun 12 Tuggeranong U @ ANU Willows 1 have done wonders for their club. Indeed, in the loop Federation Cup the pair looked Weston’s most likely source of goals and this Sun 19 Belconnen Utd @ McKellar Park is liable to continue into the Tradies Women’s Premier League Sun 26 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 campaign. The arrival of another experienced campaigner in July Nicole Somi, signed from Canberra FC, adds more nous to what is an already strong line-up. However, as was exposed in the loop Sun 3 Canberra FC @ Hawker FC Federation Cup group stages Weston are susceptible to pace Sun 17 Gungahlin Utd @ ANU Willows 2 across the field. Canberra FC, and in particular their rapid front runner Ashleigh Sykes, played havoc with the Weston defence in Sun 24 Belwest Foxes @ ANU Willows 2 their pool match and there are plenty more speedy youngsters Sun 31 Woden Valley @ Woden Park around keen to make their mark in 2011. Aurousseau is hoping for August a fun-filled season. “We are hoping for a fun and consistent season, with the aim of making the top four,” the new coach said. Sun 7 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium If she can get the best out of a squad that remained unbeaten, Sun 14 Belconnen Utd @ ANU Willows 1 albeit with three draws, in pre-season then Weston could prove Sun 21 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 to be a title threat come September. A first up match against the Belwest Foxes should prove to be an entertaining start to the year Sun 28 Canberra FC @ ANU Willows 1 before a trip to face title-favourites Woden Valley at Woden Park September arrives—something to really get their teeth into. Woden Valley Women’s Football Club Coach: Ed Hollis 2010: ACT Premier League—2nd, Grand Final Winners (defeated Belwest Foxes 5-3), Federation Cup— Runner’s-Up (lost to Belwest Foxes 1-5) THE SQUAD Tatiana Curic, Maddy Beard, Isabella Boag-Taylor, Catherine Brown, Bronte Carlin, Stephanie Coates, Ellie Crossman, Julia De Angelis, Erin Frewin, Kate Grarock, Krista Hagen, Hayley Hinde, Jaline Hoek, Lindsay Hoek, Sophie Kochinos, Ellen Kromar, Meg McLaughlin, Ashleigh Palombi, Kelsey Perry, Ellie Raymond, Sienna Senatore, Emma Thornton, Jen Walsh, Becky Watts, Gill Raymond, Kadee Hollis, Elle Hollis, Krissa Neou, Nida Mollison, Nia Southwell, Caitlin White ARRIVALS: Sophie Kochinos, Ellie Raymond (both Canberra FC), Christine Walters (ACTAS), Kate Grarock (ANU WFC)

Last year saw Woden come of age as they finally buried their Belwest Foxes hoodoo in some style, blitzing their more Sun 8 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 experienced opponents 5-3 in a memorable Grand Final with Sun 15 Belconnen United @ McKellar lively striker Georgia Yeoman-Dale bagging a hat-trick. Now they Sun 22 Belwest Foxes @ Woden Park have finally won the trophy that they have been threatening to do for the past three seasons Ed Hollis’ group of multi-talented Sun 29 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 youngsters face the ultimate test—defending their crown. The June loss of some of his talented Canberra United players to the ACTAS Sun 5 Weston Creek @ ANU Willows 2 program may have an adverse affect on how Woden perform in 2011 but the arrival of Sophie Kochinos and Ellie Raymond from Sun 12 Canberra FC @ Kaleen Enclosed Canberra FC and Christine Walters from ACTAS should cover any Sun 19 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 deficiencies caused by the absence of key players. Any way you Sun 26 Gungahlin United @ Harrison 101 look at it though Woden have an immeasurably strong line-up and will, once more, be the team to beat this season. “As a club we July hope to be competitive in all grades and again be pushing for the Sun 3 Belconnen United @ Kaleen Enc. club championship toward the end of the year,” Coach Ed Hollis Sun 17 Belwest Foxes @ Kaleen Enclosed said. “Our squad has been bolstered with the recruitment of a number of quality players joining which should help with the Sun 24 ANU WFC @ ANU Willows 1 expected loss of our Westfield W-League squad players (Grace Sun 31 Weston Creek @ Woden Park Field, Sally Rojahn, Georgia Yeoman-Dale) who have been ruled August out due to ACTAS restrictions. The majority of our youthful under- 18 squad have been promoted to the Premier League Reserves Sun 7 Canberra FC @ Deakin Stadium allowing a group of highly talented Woden Valley juniors to join Sun 14 Tuggeranong Utd @ Kambah 2-1 our 18's team.” And whilst Hollis’ squad has a very youthful look Sun 21 Gungahlin United @ Hawker FC to it make no mistake that this is a team hungry for success. After a hard campaign in 2010 the majority of the squad now knows Sun 28 Belconnen United @ Woden Park what it takes to win these kind of competitions. The desire to September defend their crown will ensure a formidable challenge in 2011. Sun 4 Belwest Foxes @ Woden Park
