    Modernizing Architecture and Ornament on Mid-Nineteenth-Century Scandinavian Farms anna ripatti University of Helsinki istorians have long looked upon railways and facto- viewed as a unified cultural sphere, I aim to shed light on ries as the primary symbols of nineteenth-century efforts to promote a united Scandinavia through architecture modernization, yet contemporary sources reveal and, specifically, through architectural ornament.     Christoffer Sundman Teaterhus och lantbruk Den mångsysslande apotekaren C. J. Wikberg Apotekare, teaterbyggare och teaterdirektör, skolföreståndare, godsägare, verksamhets- ledare, utredningsman, kemist, industrialist och affärsman. Dessa är några av de epitet man kan sätta på Carl Johan Wikberg (1816–1886), en man som från en anspråkslös bakgrund i 1800-talets Tavastehus via S:t Petersburg kom till Helsingfors, där han blev apotekare. Senare i livet ägnade han sig åt lantbruket, bl.a. på Söderkulla i Sibbo. Wikberg arbetade med rastlös energi, driftighet och seghet arbetade på ett stort antal, sinsemellan helt oli- ka områden. Hans liv och gärning är ett exempel på det mångsyssleri som hos samtidens ståndspersoner, i synnerhet en del av städernas borgerskap, kom att utvecklas till ett slags livsstil. Artikeln redogör i synnerhet för Wikbergs arbete för befrämjandet av farmacin, scenkonsten, lantbruket och industrin i vårt land under den senare hälften av 1800-talet. Nya teaterhuset i Helsingfors invigdes på kvällen den 28 november 1860 inför en 900-hövdad publik. På plats var Helsingfors crème de la crème – generalguvernören, prokuratorn och Kejserliga Senatens medlemmar tillsammans med övriga notabiliteter och konstvänner. Pressen var talrikt representerad med Zacharias Topelius i spetsen. Sex minuter över sju sänktes teatersalongens stora takkrona, dess gasflammor tändes och ”upplyste salongen med bländande dager”. Sorlet tystnade och församlingen avnjöt andäktigt en nykomponerad ”Kullervo-ouvertyr” av teaterns kapellmästare Filip von Schantz. Efter ouvertyren följde en prolog på svenska – deklamerad av den unge magis- ter Leo Mechelin – och en på finska deklamerad av studeranden S. V. Hougberg. Där- efter var det dags för kvällens huvudnummer: ”Prinsessan af Cypern”, ett sagospel skri- vet av Topelius och tonsatt av Fredrik Pacius.

ABSTRACT This thesis examines the question of the extent to which the concept of a National Style dominated architectural production in Finland between 1890 and 1916. The thesis maintains that National Style ideas should be understood as one of a number of impulses emerging in Finnish architecture in the 1890s. This point is explored through analysis of the writings of the architect, journalist and Finnish nationalist Vilho Penttilä. His writings reveal that alongside the National Style he was also concerned with the general question of architectural reform in Finland. This thinking included new ideas on the role that materials, construction and new technology should play in shaping architectural design. Alongside this ran interest in the development of a new language of architectural ornament capable of expressing the character of the building and the society who used it.

Этот экстраординарный человек, чья карьера была весьма извилистой, попробовал себя на ниве множества профессиональных занятий, типичных для той эпохи экономической и общественной модернизации: от неудачливого помещика, предпринимателя, державшего лесопилку, обладателя докторской степени по горному делу — до журналиста, писателя, драматурга, владельца ресторана и театра, любителя музыки и истории, обосновавшегося в родном для него Або (фин. Турку). Кроме того, Пинелло представлял свой дворянский род на финляндских сословных сеймах и был депутатом первых трёх из них — в 1863–1864, 1867 и 1872 гг. Настоящая статья относится к жанру биографического исследования на микроисторическом уровне.
