Trillium Charter School Learning for Change

A Few Words… Our kids can navigate the grey—they know how to look at something that might seem uncertain, make sense of it for themselves, and then make informed choices about how they want to move forward. We have two children at Trillium: Holden in 4th grade and Annie in 2nd grade. Their ability to navigate at their age far exceeds anything we would have expected from kids of their age, yet it’s common among Trillium students of all ages. Trillium kids seek to understand their surroundings, learn about them, and then act within, outside, or upon their environment.

Surely these abilities stem from many things, yet we find three traits about Trillium that cultivate them in kids:

The deep, relationship orientation that Trillium teachers take with all of their students. Trillium teachers connect with students individually and personally to encourage kids to learn from wherever they’re coming from academically or socially.

The self-directed elements of the democratic student framework. Kids at Trillium influence and drive their own learning from the beginning. This is a huge responsibility for a kid, and they accept it and embrace it faster than most of us would guess. In our own kids, this process de- veloped into a continuous personal drive to learn about what interests them or what crosses their path in life. Sometimes this shows up as a quick, deep study into a subject of interest (and often many trips to the library), while other times it emerges in a rich conversation about why someone (a kid, a parent, a coach) may have done something unex- pected, disappointing, or amazing.

The rights and responsibilities of the Trillium Constitution. The rights and responsibilities provide Trillium kids with a framework that makes sense and can be applied everywhere. If you’re a Trillium parent, I’m guessing you’ve had at least one conversation with your child that involved them either citing or using the rights and responsibilities to make sense of a situation at home. Trillium kids develop a better sense of how people behave and how to interact with a group than we imagined possible at their age, and much of this comes from the rights and responsibilities.

All of these come together to build in our children an ability to navigate the challenges and joys of life. Trillium is an amazing place. —James Hindes

1 B L O O M In this time of need, it would be easy to say something related to our lack of funding and how it endangers our school and our children's progress. But I will not.

This is a celebration, so I would like to offer an image: how my children benefit from this wonderful school, and this amazing community. How they were upset when there was a school closure, how they cannot wait to go back to school after a long holiday. It is their mates they miss, I am sure, but it is obvious that they miss the comfort they feel in their classroom—how easy it is to create, to imagine, to share—confident they will receive constructive criticism from seasoned classmates. I am sure they miss the democratic environment, the feeling of being first among equals.

Together for Trillium (TFT) is not really a subset of our community, since its members are students, parents, guardians, teachers and staff. It is an- other rendition of our community, a group that comes together to, among other things, offer support for teachers, staff and parents, to pair volun- teers with what they do best; to offer scholarships and grants. TFT brings people together for the social experience, a part of what binds us and gives our families a chance to know and support one another. It is from this environment that the fine people that put this event together emerged, stood tall and fought the odds.

I am constantly being reminded that it is the people that make this school what it is. Tonight is not different. My people give this school a face, some- times a struggling face, most times a happy smiling face, all times a beau- tiful face. Tonight it is the proud face that peers at me.

Enjoy yourselves and thank you for coming. —Nikos Tzetos

2 B L O O M Just recently, after a year of guidance, we let our twin boys ride their bikes to school without daddy tagging along. It was a big step—another milestone. This is the nature of parenting; watching and helping your child pass through each stage.

Trillium passes through stages as well. It recently got a new home, passed the torch to new leadership and even had a monumental crisis. But par- ents, being parents, have guided it through those growing pains, just as we guide our children through the stages of their lives.

As a community, we have greeted each challenge in Trillium's life—each milestone—with the same aplomb that we have done for each phase of our children's lives. And just like our kids, sometimes Trillium makes us grumpy, sometimes it gives us great joy, but we always rise to the chal- lenge, just like we rose to the challenge of getting out of bed for the 2:00 feeding.

This undeniable parallel was made so crystal clear to me while I worked on this auction. I have been a part of organizing four fund-raising auc- tions at a different school, two years as president of a PTA, and half a de- cade as director of a department at a college. I have never before seen vol- unteers so fully rise to the call as did the parents at Trillium. The number of volunteer hours dedicated to this fund-raiser probably counts into the thousands. And yet, as if the school was their very own child, they put their shoulder to the wheel without complaint or petty squabble.

Moreover, when parents couldn't volunteer, they donated. Look around you and count the number of items for sale at this auction. There is an item for almost every family at the school, over 300 donations. It is this dedication, just like parents to a child, which is manifested in everything you see here tonight, volunteer and donation alike.

We are parents. It's what we do. —Blake Swensen
