2 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 From the Commodore

It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve as the 2019 Commodore of I-LYA. This organization is steeped in history and tradition and Dennis and I look forward to the opportunity to help continue these great traditions. I-LYA serves as watch dog for proposed legislation that may affect yachting and yachtsmen and promotes and protects the interests of boat owners and water sport fans in the enjoyment of their sport. I-LYA organizes the annual Regattas at Put-in-Bay each year to encourage enjoyment of boating activities and provide opportunities for competition for its fellow members. This year the Junior Sail Regatta will be held July 14th through July 19th and is being chaired by Liz Backus Barker (VBC) and Kate Loper Keane (VBC), two very accomplished sailors who both participated in Junior Bay and who have the honor of being the first third-generation family to chair the 64th annual running of this unique event. Next up is the Senior Sail Regatta chaired by Bill Pribe (NCYC), Doug Seib (PIBYC) and Connie Miller (PIBYC). The Deepwaters begin July 31st and the regatta competitions run August 1st through August 4th. Bill, Doug and Connie are very experienced at running the regatta and will have lots of com- petitive racing along with fun on-shore activities planned for the participants. The Powerboat Regatta, chaired by Brian Moyer (MBC), begins on Cindy Johnson-Mintus August 6th, runs through August 11th, and is concurrent with the Junior Power 2019 I-LYA Commodore Regatta chaired by R/C Bob Lang (WRYCC). The Power Regattas provide opportunities for boating competitions and for the juniors to learn boating and navigation skills. There are activities for all ages each day. Please join us and bring your boating friends! All of these activities require a tremendous amount of volunteer support and sponsors to help underwrite the activities. A huge thank you to all of you I-LYA who volunteer year after year to help us run these important events. Also, a Event Dates big thank you to the clubs that advertise in our yearbook and to our sponsors. Your support is very important and allows us to publish this annual yearbook 2019 which is a great resource for our members. Please frequent our sponsors and Apr. 5–6 Spring Meeting let them know you saw their ad in the I-LYA Yearbook. July 14–18 Junior Bay Week One of the most important sponsors of our Junior Sail Regatta, is the Inter- July 31–Aug 1 Deepwater Races Lake Yachtsmen’s Fund. We would not be able to put on such a world class, affordable regatta without their support. It is a special privilege that I serve as Aug 1–4 Sail Regatta Commodore in 2019 when the Fund celebrates their 100th Anniversary! Join us Aug. 7–11 Junior & Senior in becoming a centennial donor to the fund to help them continue to educate, Powerboat Regattas challenge and inspire the next generation. Dec. 6–7 Fall Meeting at Dennis and I have enjoyed meeting many new people this year and we hope the Doubletree, that you will join us at the Bay in 2019. Here’s to a great boating season. We Cleveland-Westlake hope to see you all soon!

Warmest Regards,

Cindy Johnson-Mintus 2019 I-LYA Commodore

4 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 Meet the Commodore

2019 Commodore Cindy Johnson-Mintus hails from Fremont, Ohio where she grew up on the Sandusky River. Cindy lived near the Memory Marina, which is now known for the fun hot spot, Jimmy Buckets! In her early years, Cindy’s entire family lived on or near the Sandusky River in the small community of Wightman’s Grove. She was very lucky in that she grew up with access to the water and enjoyed boating, fishing and activities on the water all summer long. Cindy relocated to Akron, Ohio in the late 90s with her children Amber and Craig. Cindy’s career in Public Accounting took her away from the water for a brief time but her love of the outdoors prevailed, and she con- tinued to boat with friends on Lake Erie enjoying water skiing, fishing and trips to Put-in-Bay. Dennis and Cindy met in 2000 through mutual Dennis and Cindy friends and soon Cindy became involved in the I-LYA as a volunteer, which was very natural for her as she is someone who volunteers her time for many organizations some of which include The Summit County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Summit County Children’s Services and the Women’s Endowment Fund. Cindy has led professional organiza- tions, charitable organizations and is a Partner and leader in her Accounting firm, Bober, Markey, Fedorovich & Company, where she has worked for over thirty years. Cindy began her association with I-LYA as the Treasurer and First Lady during 2001 when Dennis was Commodore. She then went on to become the Treasurer for seven additional administrations. She also served six years on the Board of Trustees including Vice-President for two years and currently serves as Chair of the Code of Regulations Committee. She is also a Trustee for the Inter-Lake Yachtsmen’s Fund which is celebrating its 100th anniver- sary in 2019. Besides keeping busy with work, family and volunteering, Cindy finds time to have fun on the water. As a member of the Port Clinton Yacht Club (PCYC), Skipper the Ashtabula Yacht Club (AYC), and the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club (PIBYC) she finds plenty of activities to participate in. Cindy and Dennis attend both the Power and Sail Regattas most years and are typically volunteering in some manner. Cindy loves fishing probably more than anything she does on the water and she especially loves to fish in the Central Basin for perch. She has been the recipient of the Fish Ohio Award from the Ohio Department of Wildlife for catching a perch larger than 13 inches for many years. Cindy and Dennis along with their beloved dog, Skipper, take long boating trips each year and one of their favorite destinations is going to Kanagio Yacht Club in Port Stanley, Ontario Canada which is an I-LYA member club. Whether power boating, fishing or sailing she just loves being on the water! Port Clinton Yacht Club is Cindy’s Port of Call and where you can find her when she is not cruising or at the I-LYA Regattas. Cindy and Dennis enjoy relaxing and hanging out with their fellow boating friends at the pool or the bar. Stop by and say “Hello” when you are in the area! Serving as this year’s I-LYA Commodore is an honor and Cindy is com- mitted to leading the organization on a successful voyage in 2019!

6 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 Port Clinton Yacht Club

Very early in the 1900s, a lovely wooded area existed north of the Portage River, near to stores across the river and accessible by a short walk across an iron swing bridge. After crossing the bridge, one would follow a path to an area with a small building owned by the US Government. A small group of gentle- men felt this area would be a perfect location for them, their wives, and chil- dren to find swimming and boating fun. The gentlemen petitioned the federal government to lease this property. Finally, upon successful negotiations, the small building on the property was remodeled into a clubhouse. In 1916 the first constitution and bylaws of the Port Clinton Yacht Club were adopted which included specific language for the promotion of yacht- ing. During the 1920s the club saw many changes that included purchasing the leased land from the government, building a new clubhouse, building our first caretakers house and the dredging of the boat basin. After WWII the club received its first liquor license and the clubhouse underwent extensive renovations that included indoor plumbing. In 1947, the first sail regatta, “Snow Flurries Race” was established. As the club continued to grow, so did a need for a new clubhouse and in 1961 the building, which stands today, was dedicated. In 1962 the first “Green Island Race” was held on Labor Day weekend and the first “no pets” rule was adopted due to an incident with a visiting boater and his pet monkey. In 1971, our first pool was completed which caused a great stir as many members couldn’t understand why we needed a pool with the lake so near. High lake levels had been problematic at times which prompted the club to build a dyke on the shores of the lake to prevent it from washing into the lagoon. The docks and grade of the grounds have since been raised to prevent flooding. As the club grew so did membership numbers and the need for more docks—leading to the 1980s construction of the east jetty at the entrance to the lagoons, an addition to the clubhouse of a kids’ The object and purpose of room, and a major remodel including installation of central air conditioning. In the 1990s PCYC experienced great change at the club including a consti- Port Clinton Yacht Club shall be tutional change (1993) accepting female membership. In the swimming, other sports and mid-2000s the club purchased additional lakefront property increasing size of our footprint on the shores of Lake Erie. Today, our members enjoy the pool, waterslides and two sand beaches, ten- nis, shuffle board, sailing, boating, large marina, social activities and beauti- ful clubhouse overlooking the Portage River. We offer abundant green space for social gatherings and picnics and all of our docks offer drive up space for cars. Both the Power and Sail Fleet offer multiple social, learning, cruising and racing events. PCYC is the host club and organizing authority for One-Design Championships, I-LYA regattas, I-LYA Traveler Series regattas, and Club Racing. The club hosts the Green Island Regatta each Labor Day weekend and the Snow Flurries Regatta in late September each year. Our year-round social calendar offers plenty of activities to enjoy and our bar, lounge and kid’s room are open 361 days a year. Nestled, on 11 acres of land, between the shores of Lake Erie and the Portage River, we are truly the “Greatest Club on the Great Lakes.” www.portclintonyachtclub.com

14 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 Yachtsman of the Year

Commodore Dennis Mintus Each spring since the tradition was started in 1978, it is the responsibility of the Commodore to select an individual as the Yachtsman of the Year. That selection is based on the dedication that this person has demonstrated for the I-LYA and is evidenced by the many unselfish hours that they have contrib- uted to the I-LYA to ensure the continued success of the yacht racing competi- tion and the I-LYA organization. Commodore Dennis Mintus has been involved with I-LYA since the early 80s. First as a participant in both the power and sail regattas; then after win- ning many awards in both regattas, including being the first winner of the Commodore’s Trophy for being the overall winner of the PowerBoat Regatta, he chaired the predicted log and weather contests. He then went on to work as the Sail Registrar and Scorer for many years. He has also served on the Congratulations, Com. Dennis Mintus! Yachtsmen’s Fund Board and the I-LYA board of Trustees and was Commodore 2019 I-LYA Yachtsman of the Year in 2001. He currently represents I-LYA at the Boating Association of Ohio and as Vice Chair of the Ohio Waterways Safety Council. Dennis has served I-LYA for over 30 years in many different roles, always giving his all to everything he does. His dedication to the organization is commendable. Please join me in recognizing his long service and many contributions to Inter-Lake Yachting for these many years! Dennis we are very proud of your accomplishments and true dedication!

Gail McKee, SSCC Gail has served the I-LYA for many years in a variety of positions. She was the First Lady of I-LYA in 2004 with her husband Rich McKee but she started volunteering for the organization a long time before that. Gail served as the Registrar many years ago and she has been in many ways the First Mate for the majority of the Commodores before me, serving as the Head of the Entertainment Committee. Gail’s organizational skills and dedication have served many a commodore over the years. Thank you, Gail, for your tireless service to our great organization!

Commodore Johnson-Mintus presents the Commodore’s Award to Gail McKee.

Connie Miller, PIBYC Connie has been around sailing and I-LYA for many years and became nat- urally involved with the I-LYA Sail Regatta. She has served as Treasurer for the Administration but most often you will find her at the Club during the Sail Regatta checking in the sailors and managing the “organized chaos”! Connie has served as Sail Social Director and Sail Co-Chair. She does so much to help keep us organized from taking minutes at our meetings, helping set-up the meetings, getting quotes for our food service and making sure everything goes well at the Bay. Connie is also serving as Treasurer for 2019 and she is a mem- ber of the I-LYA Board of Trustees. Connie, your dedication is commendable, thank you for all you do and here’s to a long future of service!

The I-LYA Honorary Regatta Chairman is awarded to an individual who has displayed his or her dedication over the years to I-LYA and our four regattas and who has consistently cooperated and helped with the goals of I-LYA and our affiliates on and off the Island. Marvin Booker Marvin “Book” Booker, first visited Put-in-Bay with the United States Coast Guard in 1959. To say he fell in love with the island is an understate- ment. He married a summer cottager, Joan Neff, in 1964 and moved to the island full time in 1968. Together with his father-in-law, Allen Neff, Marv founded or helped found the Crews Nest, The Jet Express, Mossbacks, and Lake Erie Patrol (fuel oil). Over the years, Marv has pushed to make the Island a tourist destination. 54 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 I-LYA Clubs Host National Championships

In 2018, three of the fourteen US Sailing Championships were hosted by I-LYA clubs, sailed on Lake Erie, and supported by The Yachtsmen’s Fund. How fortunate we are to have the race management teams, resources, volun- teers, and support boats needed to host these national caliber events. In July, 40 teams of young women from around the country competed in 420s at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club for the 2018 US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy. Fourteen local sailors representing Hoover SC, Cleveland YC, Edgewater YC, Mentor Harbor YC, and Put-in-Bay YC participated. Grace Squires and Michaela O’Donnell of Hoover Sailing Club finished 13th overall and Emma Friedauer, also from Hoover, received the sportsmanship award. In January at the National Sailing Program Symposium in Florida, MHYC received the Petersburg Yacht Club Trophy in recognition of its excel- lent planning and execution of the event. Hats off to MHYC, Event Chair Kathy Allyn, PRO Jamie Jones and their crews for hosting a top-notch regatta. When North Cape Yacht Club hosted the Chubb U.S. Junior Championships in August, Dr. Matt Dubois, chair of the U.S. Junior Sailing Championships Committee, was on hand to welcome 93 youth sailors to compete for the These are the 14 I-LYA sailors who Sears Cup and Bemis and Smythe Trophies. The Principal Race Officers — Matt participated at the US Sailing Junior Bounds, Barbara Shaffer, Jamie Jones, and Steve Harris — were all from I-LYA. Women’s Doublehanded Championship at Additionally, Regatta Co-Chairs Robert Gordenker and Chip Gossman had Mentor Harbor Yachting Club. the support of the NCYC membership, nearby residents, the local lightning fleet, and an “ARMY of volunteers.” I-LYA junior sailors were present in full force as well after sweeping the Area E Championships held at Rochester Yacht Club in July. Competing for the Sears Cup, Jack and Annika Vanderhorst (EWYC) and Meghan Dieball (GIYC) finished fourth in lightnings with numerous top five finishes. Grosse Point Yacht Club sailors Michael Kirkman and Zach Rockwell were 10th in the C420 class. Finishing 14th in the C420, Ian Reimel and Zoe Hoctor (HSC/NCYC) also received the Bemis Sportsmanship Award. Henry Rolander (CLSA) and Spencer Barnes (CYC) competed for the Smythe Trophy in laser radials, finishing 14th and 17th, and Henry was awarded the Faye Bennett Sportsmanship Award. In late September, the 2018 U.S. Team Racing Championship for the historic George R. Hinman Trophy was hosted by The Foundry, Cleveland’s Community Rowing and Sailing Center. Event Chair Sam Patterson Pictured at Chubb Nationals are I-LYA and PRO Steve Harris pulled off three full days of non-stop team racing sailors (L to R) Ian Reimel, Zoe Hoctor, Spencer Barnes, Meghan Dieball, and Jack showcasing both our sport, Cleveland’s waterfront, and the positive impact of and Annika Vanderhorst. Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 63 PHRF Boat of the Year

Team Flat Stanley is a race team in several different classes. The Melges 32 partnership of longtime friends Terry McSweeney and Trey Sheehan and their families started in 2007. The idea for the name Flat Stanley came about as a result of the kids doing the cartoon geog- raphy lesson The Flat Stanley Project popular in grade school curriculums across the country. The boat spends its time traveling on a trailer from city to city across the country. Flat Stanley fit the family sailing program that the boat would eventually become as the kids grew along with the program. Each year for I-LYA Bayweek we load the boat up with our kids and their friends from the junior programs around Lake Erie and the kids decide which adults accompany them on the Tartan Ten or the Melges 32. We are thrilled to come back each year and com- pete with and against our friends from throughout the Flat Stanley Great Lakes. Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 71 I-LYA Junior Power Regatta at Put-in-Bay

Junior Power Contests These Junior Regatta contests are designed to reinforce the safe boating practices and rules of the road learned in the classroom. The contests and seminars use a hands-on approach and provide the juniors with the confi- dence to operate motorized vessels. The vessels used at the regatta are inflata- bles donated by senior participants of the power regatta. For additional infor- mation about the Junior Power Program please visit the I-LYA web-site. General Knowledge and Seamanship Friday’s safe boating seminar provides each junior with a refresher course on safety requirements, rules of the road, understanding of buoys and their identi- fying characteristics, hand held GPS and electronic chart instruction, and much more. Juniors will be asked to demonstrate knot tying, line throwing, and how to properly secure a vessel. A written exam, testing each junior on his or her general knowledge of the above concludes this contest. Charting and Course Plotting The safe boating seminar also covers charting and course plotting. Hands-on activities teach the juniors how to read charts, determine their position and plot a course. At the end of the seminar, each junior will be tested on their understanding of the above. Navigation Competition This is a shore-based contest that will require juniors to pair up and take a short walk or bike ride around the Island. They will be asked to take bearings, make observations and determine their position using hand held GPS as they make their way around the Island. Bikes will be provided if necessary. Weather Contest Each junior will be asked to forecast the weather for a prescribed time and place. The forecast will include temperature, wind direction and velocity, baro- metric pressure, sky conditions, precipitation, and relative humidity. Prediction forms will be provided and must be submitted by a set deadline. A committee shall assemble at the prescribed place and time to observe and record the actual weather conditions and determine the winners of this contest. On-the-Water (Four contests using inflatables) “Course A” Boat Handling Contest “Course A” will demonstrate the steering and boat handling capabilities of each junior. The junior, accompanied by an assigned adult, will run a 3-leg course in both a clockwise and counter-clock- wise direction with the objective of making both runs in the same amount of time. Speed is NOT the objective. “Course B” Compass Reading and Bearings Contest “Course B” will demonstrate a junior’s ability to read a compass and take bearings and identify your posi- tion using hand held GPS. The goal is to steer as carefully as possible between the marks for each of three designated courses set by the committee. At the end of each leg the junior is to record the compass heading steered. An assigned adult will crew on each vessel. Chicane This is a timed test of boat handling and low speed maneuvering. The junior will be timed and judged on his or her ability to successfully maneuver through a prescribed course at no-wake speed in 2 directions without creating a wake and without hitting the marks on the course.

72 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 I-LYA Junior Power Regatta at Put-in-Bay

Docking This contest evaluates the junior’s boat handling and maneuvering skills as related to docking. The junior will be judged on his/her ability to prop- erly maneuver, dock and secure his or her vessel within a predetermined dock space. Hitting the dock and/or high speed operations will result in loss of points. Social Competitions In addtion to the bragging rights earned by making a hole-in-one during Jr. Putt-Putt or Jr. East trouncing Jr. West (or vice-versa) in volleyball, Junior Power Regatta participants also enjoy the following contests: Geo-Quest Based on Geo-caching, Geo-Quest is a live treasure hunt utilizing compass and GPS skills. Junior teams will explore the island via adult-driven golf carts and locate hidden “treasures.” Cardboard Boat Race Who doesn’t love making stuff with duct tape? Juniors combine their engi- neering skills with construction and boating knowlege. Entrants must be 12–17, pre-assembly is allowed, each boat to be designed for 1 or 2 people. Awards given to place finishers and a “Spirit Award” given to the team showing greatest Team Spirit and “The Titanic Award” to the boat that sinks in spectacular fashion. Bring your own cardboard and tape. NO materials will be provided by the committee. Fishing Derby The “Fishing Derby” is designed for all juniors participating in the regatta. Come one, come all and see who catches the largest, the most and the smallest fish. The committee will be available to bait your hooks and will supply the bait as well as snacks for the anglers. Bring your pole and your life jacket and arrive 15 minutes before start time so you will be ready to drop your hook. Prizes will be awarded immediately after the finish time. So don’t be late and good luck! Awards Ribbons: are given to each winner of the four On-the-Water contests, the Weather contest, and the land/shore based Navigation competition. 1st, 2d or 3d place ribbon awards are provided depending upon participation. Junior Skipper Award and Trophy: is given to the individual having the highest total combined score for all On-the-Water contests and the Weather contest. Scholarships: 1st, 2d & 3d place monetary scholarship awards are given to the eligible juniors with the highest overall score for all competitions. 1. Only those juniors who are members of a boat club affiliated with I-LYA will be eligible to receive scholarship awards. 2. Scholarships are based on final results from 2 days of competitions at the annual I-LYA Regatta. • General knowledge and seamanship • Charting and course plotting • Navigation competition • On-the-Water “Course A” Boat Handling “Course B” Compass Reading and Bearings Chicane: boat handling and low speed operations Docking contest: maneuvering and docking

Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2019 81 I-LYA Power Regatta at Put-in-Bay

Power Contests Commodore’s Trophy Competition for the Commodore’s Trophy is based upon a combination of seamanship, boat handling and overall knowledge of boating. Four events were selected by the committee, which are thought to provide all of these skills. To compete you must enter all four (4) of these contests. Entry forms are available at the Registrars desk and must be completed and on file in order to compete. A percentage has been given to each event to determine the overall winner of the Commodore’s Trophy. A flag and pin will be presented to the winner and your name placed on the Commodore’s Trophy which is kept in the Boaters’ Museum at Put-in-Bay. The trophy is awarded at the I-LYA Fall Banquet each year. This trophy will be awarded to an individual competing in the various events. The trophy will NOT be awarded to a competing team. This is an individual award NOT a team award. Commodore’s Trophy con- tests include: Predicted Log & Navigation (30%), Docking (25%), Chicane (25%) and Weather Forecasting (20%). Predicted Log The Predicted Log is a boat handling contest. A contestant’s knowledge of their boat’s performance and good navigation skills are necessary. A predeter- mined course is designed around a set of control points; which include buoys, markers, and landmarks, which must be passed on the port or starboard side of the boat, as designated. A contestant’s calculation of his/her predicted log requires the contestant to plot the designated course on his/her own chart and predict the elapsed time, in minutes and seconds, that he/she will pass each con- trol point. Contestants must run the course at their chosen speed, higher than six knots; their prediction should be based on their chosen speed. The use of GPS is allowed when running the course. Contestants should know their boat’s compass deviation, as most control points are not visible from the start of a leg. The Predicted Log committee will assign an impartial observer to accompany the contestant during the run. Each contestant is asked to bring at least one observer, who will be assigned to another contestant’s boat. A short training class will be held for observers before the start of the contest. Each contestant must furnish two watches able to read in hours, minutes and seconds. Greeley Trophy Start Buoy R “2” Fl R 4s, PIB Harbor Entrance Leave to Port Steer a course at 270 T for 2.5 NM (2.88 SM). At that point, give timepiece to the observer and proceed to: Control Pt. 1 Green Island Fl 2.5s 200 feet off Leave to Port Control Pt. 2 Buoy Y Can “F” Erie Proving Grounds Leave to Port Control Pt. 3 Buoy Y Can “E” Erie Proving Grounds Leave to Port Control Pt. 4 Buoy Y Can “D” Erie Proving Grounds Leave to Port Finish Buoy R “2” Fl R 4s, PIB Harbor Entrance Leave to Starboard Committee Distance 16.9 NM Specific instructions will be provided in the contest packet. Each contestant must complete the entry form provided by the committee. This contest is not intended to be a team event. However, if a team wishes to compete, and if eli- gible, only one flag will awarded to the team captain. Only the team captain will be eligible to compete for the Commodore’s Trophy.
