“Pearl Harbor ~ December 7, 1941 ~ Lest We Forget” Summer Edition SPEAKERSMemorial FOR 2014 NA DayTIONAL ~ CONVENTION2014 KEYNOTE SPEAKER, THOMAS KIMMEL Grandson of Admiral Kimmel A noted Pearl Harbor scholar, former FBI agent, and eldest grandson of Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, Commander of the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7,1941, Tom Kimmel comes from a family of distinguished scholars and government servants dedicated to protecting America. Notwithstanding the preceding, his grandfather was accused from the well of the House of Representatives of failing to prevent World War II, and the Cold War. His fourth great grandfather was accused of starting the Revolutionary War, and the Whiskey Rebellion. Tom welcomes the opportunity to respond to the allegations. A graduate of the US Naval Academy, Tom served on three warships during the Vietnam War and attended John Marshall Law School prior to joining the FBI in 1973, where he continued to serve his Country as an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for more than 25 years. Tom investigated organized crime in Cleveland, served on the House Appropriations Committee Surveys and Investigations Staff at CIA Headquarters, headed the FBI in East Texas, headed the Labor Racketeering Unit at FBI Headquarters, headed the National Drug Intelligence Center in Johnstown, PA, and served on the President's Council on Integrity and Efficiency. Tom was also the Assistant Agent in Charge of the Philadelphia FBI Division heading the Foreign Counterintelligence and Terrorism Programs during the 1st attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. Upon retiring from the FBI, Tom served as a consultant to the Bureau addressing major spy scandals in the FBI and CIA. Tom has appeared at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, twice on 60 Minutes, on War Stories Investigates with Oliver North, the Discovery Channel, the National Geographic Channel, and spoken throughout the United States, Canada, Columbia, and Japan to hundreds of groups of all ages frequently as a repeat speaker

2 Offspring Issue 3, 2014 FROM YOUR NATIONAL PRESIDENT . . . . Louella Large ur organization preserves the memory of the Pearl Harbor survivors and the Japanese attack on Pearl O Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941. Since that tragedy and during our lifetime, our nation has been confronted with many other tragedies at home and abroad, both natural and man-made. Let us keep those who face such tragedies today in our thoughts and prayers. Remembrance is the highest tradition bestowed upon our nation and on the SDPHS. Please contact those Pearl Harbor survivors in your area who we are fortunate to still have with us. Visit our memorials we have purchased in their memory. Tell their stories as they have told you to others. Send their pictures & stories to me for display at our conventions. Send any memorabilia that you wish to donate to the SDPHS in their name to me also. Hopefully one day, we will have enough memorabilia, to have a PHS Museum and Library stateside for children to visit and learn all the facts of that Infamous Day. Our trademarks are once more secure. Our V.P. Joe Kralik handled this duty under my instructions. Please note his article in this Offspring. Our trademark and logo and all the work that the attorneys did for the SDPHS pro bono will be on display at our convention this year. I thank Carol Gladys for locating this attorney and Joe for carrying out the duties to renew such vital data. I am very excited about this convention. Instead of regular entertainment at our banquet, we will go down Memory Lane with music, dance and dress. I invite everyone attending to enjoy the music of the 40's & 50's. Dress Hawaiian style in your muumuus or dress accordingly to the period. We will have a DJ and everyone can dance to the music of the era. You will hear Hawaiian music to cuddle to or to hula to and on into the sock hop period which is for the next generation that followed the war years and depression. There will be a contest for Most Original Dress, 1 for Hawaiian, 1 for military & 1 for the dress worn back home. We will also have dance contests with prizes. Our main speaker at the banquet, will be Thomas Kimmel. Our Luncheon speaker will be coming from Hawaii. He is Friend of the Lake Erie Chapter 2 in Ohio. His relatives who worked at the bases & experienced another facet of the bombing told the stories of Pearl Harbor throughout his life. The dinner cruise will be most relaxing and fun. Make memories and send your registration to Carol Gladys now and plan on attending this very memorable convention. It has been a long 5½ years but most memorable. My heart will always be with each and every member of the SDPHS. I will continue speaking & telling the stories sent to me of our survivors until I can no longer speak. My dedication to keeping the memory alive will never fade. Please attend convention - support the Pearl Harbor survivors and the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor survivors. Help make my last convention as your National President the best ever! Thank you for supporting me in the past and having the confidence in me to do all we have done together as a team these past years. Your commitment of membership, your donations, support and willingness to step forward and assist or run for office is the backbone of our organization. I feel honored to have served you and worked with you for the sake of preserving our Survivors memories and their stories.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT TRADEMARK PROTECTION EXTENDED Carol Gladys, National Secretary Joe Kralik, National Vice President

Period ending 6/30/2014 In May of this year, I was contacted by a representative of the law firm of Smith, Gambrell & Russell regarding the renewal of our trademark protection for the logo of the Sons and NEW MEMBERS Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. Through several conversations with Michael Alan McCarley Simpsonville, SC them we became aware that we had two trademark renewals that were due Jack Rhys McCarley Simpsonville, SC this September and two 10-year renewals that would be due in 2015. At that time, we were instructed that we should budget for $3,600.00 to Jacob Gregory Walenter Lafayette, CA complete these trademark renewals. In researching how similar organizations have accomplished renewing their trademark protection with limited funds, National Secretary, Carol Question: Gladys, discovered that the Chicago law firm of Neal & McDevitt, LLC, What is the connection between had recently assisted the Bugles Across America organization with their Al Capone’s car and President trademark renewals on a pro bono basis. Being a volunteer bugler for this Roosevelt in December of 1941? organization, I was aware of their mission and believed that our mission of remembering those that had perished and survived the was very similar. Therefore, I contacted Mr. Richard Biagi at Neal & McDevitt, LLC to inquire if he would be willing to work with us in renewing our trademark protection on a pro bono basis and within minutes received a response that stated that he would be honored to do this. Over the course of the next few days, I received the contracts that allowed Neal & McDevitt, LLC to represent us in this endeavor and on July 15th was notified that the trademark renewals had been completed. I also received an invoice from Neal & McDevitt, LLC that was zeroed out. To show our appreciation we presented the law firm with an SDPHS Appreciation Award which was purchased through Things Remembered and delivered to Mr. Biagi on August 4, 2014. For the answer, see “A Bit of History” on page 9.

Child Survivors Recall December 7, 1941 Contributed by Tom Davey, Child Survivor

Last year, Katrina Luksovsky, a Navy wife who lives on Ford Island decided to find out who lived in her house during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. Her research led to a reunion of Child Survivors which took place on February 28, 2014 at a restaurant on the boardwalk at Virginia Beach, VA. What was unique about this group is that they all lived in the Officers Quarters at the Southeastern end of Ford Island on Dec. 7, 1941. This neighborhood bordered on Row. John Davey & wife Barbara with hula dancers Tom Davey, who lived in Quarters Q said, “There were 12 of the 16 living "kids" present, now in their 70s and 80s, who hadn't seen each other in 73 years. We became known as the Children of Battleship Row, the title of the book written by Joan Zuber Earle, who was my neighbor and who also attended this reunion. Sadly, an expected attendee and neighbor, Charlotte Coe Lemann, passed away on this day. Many stories, pictures and remembrances were shared that tested our aging memory banks.” These proceedings were arranged for by the Ford Island Historic Community Association headed up by Katrina Luksovsky, a Navy Captain's wife, who presently lives in the "old" neighborhood. Attending was Katya Shoemaker Spicuzza from the Northern Neck who was the youngest Ford Island child, just 7 months old when the attack took place. There was Patricia Bellinger Kauffmann of Charlottsville, the admiral’s daughter, who at 14 was old enough to pull badly burned sailors out of the path of strafing planes and into the shelter under her family’s house. There were Peggy Zuber Unger and Joan Zuber
