“I was tempted by a pretty y y coloured muslin”: Jane Austen and the Art of Being Fashionable MARY HAFNER-LANEY Mary Hafner-Laney is an historic costumer. Using her thirty-plus years of trial-and-error experience, she has given presentations and workshops on how women of the past dressed to historical societies, literary groups, and costuming and re-enactment organizations. She is retired from the State of Washington . E E plucked that first leaf o ff the fig tree in the Garden of Eden and decided green was her color, women of all times and all places have been interested in fashion and in being fashionable. Jane Austen herself wrote , “I beleive Finery must have it” (23 September 1813) , and in Northanger Abbey we read that Mrs. Allen cannot begin to enjoy the delights of Bath until she “was provided with a dress of the newest fashion” (20). Whether a woman was like Jane and “so tired & ashamed of half my present stock that I even blush at the sight of the wardrobe which contains them ” (25 December 1798) or like the two Miss Beauforts in Sanditon , who required “six new Dresses each for a three days visit” (Minor Works 421), dress was a problem to be solved. There were no big-name designers with models to show o ff their creations. There was no Project Runway . There were no department stores or clothing empori - ums where one could browse for and purchase garments of the latest fashion. How did a woman achieve a stylish appearance? Just as we have Vogue , Elle and In Style magazines to keep us up to date on the most current styles, women of the Regency era had The Ladies Magazine , La Belle Assemblée , Le Beau Monde , The Gallery of Fashion , and a host of other publications (Decker) . -

Chef Anita Lo is serving up delicious recipes for self-love in her new cookbook: “Solo: A Modern Cookbook for a Party of One,” (Knopf, 2018) devoted to embracing those solitary moments in life. “It’s about celebrating you,” Lo told Moneyish of her second cookbook, out Tuesday. “We all need a little bit of time for ourselves. It’s nice to eat with people, but more often than not these days -- even if you’re in a long term relationship -- sometimes your spouses are working and you have to cook something for yourself.” Lo, a first generation Chinese-American who grew up in Birmingham, MI., has cooked in some of the world’s most renowned kitchens, including Bouley and Chanterelle in New York City. She opened her own restaurant in 2000, Annisa, serving upscale contemporary American cuisine in Greenwich Village for 17 years up until it closed last year. She held a Michelin star for nine consecutive years, served on “Top Chef Masters,” and became the first female guest chef to cook at the White House in 2015 for the Obamas. Now she’s here to tell eaters that solo meals don’t have to be boring or defrosted in a microwave, positioning herself as the ideal candidate to write the book. “I’ve been dumped almost as many times as I’ve been in relationships -- and I can count those on less than two hands … that’s a lot of solo meals,” she writes in the book. -

Growing up in a single-parent household with two siblings who all took turns cooking, Jasinski developed a knack for following recipes and creating her own, until eventually, it was always her turn to cook. In a high school occupational program for aspiring chefs, Jasinski made the decision to leave her other passion – music – behind, and dedicate her studies to cooking, permanently trading the melodic sounds of her clarinet, oboe and flute for the cacophony of clanging pots and pans. At the time, the best cooking school in the state of California was right in her own backyard, Santa Barbara City College, where she not only refined her cooking skills, but got a taste of restaurant management and front-of-the-house experience. Ever the over-achiever, Jasinski then took her training to the next level at the Culinary Institute of America, making the dean’s list and unsettling more than a few teachers by challenging their principals or techniques. "I believe you get out of things what you put into them," she explains. "I always want to get the most out of everything I do." And she does. Working her way through school waiting tables on campus during the week and apprenticing in the famed Rainbow Room kitchen in New York City on weekends, Jasinski completed her formal education before she was 21-years-old. -

During its century this cinema, and in particular Hindi-language popular cinema, arguably the Imost important of several cinema industries in the Subcontinent, has been both mirror and lamp—reflecting “Indianness” back to Indians at home and abroad, but also shaping Indianness. Movie-going in India is a special sort of pleasure—for many affording rare access to privacy, a sometimes three-hour- long respite from noise and heat in an air-conditioned, carpeted interior, where one can be alone with oneself among others, in the dark. This pleasure neces- sarily induces a different relation to interior, psychic space, without having to submit to sleep, even absenting the enjoying ego from the enjoyment: this is as close to accessing (unconscious) desire as most ever come, and could even be considered a kind of wild psychoanalysis. For many Indians without the means, it affords opportunities to travel (“transport”?), if only on the wings of fan- tasy: to alternative realities, foreign locales, alien cultures, unfamiliar aesthet- ics of self and unaccustomed social arrangements, pleasurable disorientations of everyday life. The “dream machine” is also a space-time travel machine— “motion” pictures move us to different zones, to unaccustomed emotions. Sitting in darkened cinema theaters in India, the spectator might also be struck by how often Indianness itself is what is being screened—in both senses. Hindi cinema has been, to change metaphors, a “dream machine,” producing images of collective or national identity that, with every iteration, prove more transitional, contradictory, and elusive or enable us to screen truths about our- selves from ourselves.
