FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, Can it really be June already? I wonder what you might be looking forward to during the summer months? A bit of time out? Some time away? Some time spent outdoors, weather permitting? As someone who tends to have several books on the go at once, I'm hoping to finish off some of the titles that occupy my desk and my bedside table. One of those books is by the priest John Davies and is titled “Walking the M62”. There is clearly more to this than the title suggests, and from a health and safety point-of-view it is necessary to offer some further explanation! And so as John records for us: I spent the whole of September and October 2007 walking across the north of , a coast-to-coast walk from Hornsea in the east to Crosby in the west, for the most part following quite closely the route of the M62 trans-Pennine motorway… I fantasised that I might strengthen my understanding of the relationships between people and places by preparing to spend days in the company of people en-route who knew their place - people with local knowledge who would walk with me and share that knowledge through our conversation. The book, which is a version of daily entries on the website Walking the M62*, is a fascinating read and I appreciate John's emphasis on celebrating the local, the stories that people might share, and the discovery of so many areas of beauty and interest that might sometimes be taken for granted. His work puts one in mind of that now-popular phrase in which one “seeks heaven in the ordinary”. A similar work, titled “Beating the Bounds - Walks and Rides in in the Millennium Year”, sees its author Terry Miller offer “an informed and gentle appreciation of the life and land of Lincolnshire and an attractive celebration of its unique character” courtesy of his text, photographs, drawings and paintings**. Here Terry also captures the importance of a sense of place, taking care to listen to the daily rhythm of a place, to meet its people, hear of its history and celebrate its life. This brings me on nicely to the Lincolnshire Show which takes place towards the end of June, on the 24th and the 25th. As the organisers suggest, “experience a true celebration of rural Lincolnshire with an eclectic mix of breathtaking entertainment, food, shopping, music, horticulture and farm life”, making this another celebration of place -past, present and future - and the gifts of its people. As Rector, and as someone with farming connections, I am delighted to have again been asked to offer a blessing on the second day of this year's Show, and I hope that this year's event will offer an opportunity to meet with folk, to reflect on the beauty of our world and celebrate a sense of place. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area and to live alongside such wonderful people. I hope that you enjoy these summer months, and with every blessing to you all, Adrian PRAYER FOCUS FOR JUNE This month we focus on people in distress in the world. We pray for those affected by the devastation of two earthquakes in Nepal. We pray for those who have lost family and friends, their homes and livelihoods. And thank God for the relief agencies at work there. Also for the migrants escaping from their homelands for fear of persecution and for the plight of those abandoned at sea by people smugglers.

Hope of Man

The hopes of man is as dust in the wind, Swirling in gusts, blows as it will. The hopes of man is a shower of raindrops We drink in the moment yet die of thirst. The hopes of man is as the sun's heat, Hot for the moment cooled in the cloud. The hope of man is as ice on a pond Yet it melts in the warmth of the sun. Our hope is as a rainbow so lovely to see! But in moments it fades away from view. The hope of man is born in the womb Riches achieved then stolen! Gone! The hopes of man is like visions of glory Night time dreams he drift's along. PBFS PEST CONTROL The hope of man is as life itself! Here for a moment blink and it's gone. ALL PESTS Our hopes of tomorrow rest with the Son Rats, mice, moles, wasps etc His glory forever since time began. Domestic - Commercial - Agricultural The poem above was written by Hackthorn resident John Franks. I welcome your comments, which will be passed on to John. Lindsey U3A welcomes new members and invites you to come along to a monthly General Meeting without commitment to get a feel of what the organisation has on offer. The group is over 300 strong with over 25 special interest groups wide- ranging from 5 mile walks to Gardening Group to Opera Group to Knitting Group for example. There is definitely something for everyone, all offering companionship and friendship with the opportunity to learn on the way. The monthly General Meetings are held in Welton Village Hall at 10.30am on the first Thursday of each month. We enjoy an interesting talk from a diversity of speakers and prior to this there is an opportunity to peruse the planned events and to have coffee with other members. We have regular outings to interesting places organised by the Visits Group, and the Theatre Group also arranges well-supported trips to nearby venues by coach to sample ballet, plays and musicals. Special events are the Summer Lunch which is always a sellout, and a group holiday which has so far visited Northumbria, Kent and Holland, and is this year going to the Cotswolds. At the moment we do not have a waiting list. The annual fee is £12 which includes tea, coffee and biscuits at each monthly meeting, and is a real bargain! Anyone interested should please contact our Membership Secretary Sid Miller on 01522 688977 or at [email protected] Further details are available on the Lindsey U3A website community.lincolnshire.gov.uk/LindseyU3A/ which lists all the groups and activities, and where you can download an application form. HACKTHORN C. OF E. PRIMARY SCHOOL Just like in the world of nature, spring seems to herald an even greater level of activity at our school, and thanks to the efforts of the gardening club which are giving nature a helping hand, visitors to the school are being treated to some beautiful displays of flowers, with the prospect of home-grown veg on sale fast becoming a reality too! Everyone has been making fantastic progress at the whole-school swimming sessions, as demonstrated by the huge number of certificates being awarded each week at 'good works' assemblies. Parents who come along on a Friday morning are always amazed at how much the children pack in to each week at school - especially when the normal response at the end of the day, when asked what's happened, is usually 'not much'! We've been shown pictures of science experiments into forces, practical maths, human clocks as well as examples of 'eco art' and readings of creative writing. It's a funny old world sometimes. Especially when you're young, there's always the next big thing to look forward to when you're another year older … and you finally get to be 'top of the pile' at Primary School, just heading for the run down to 'big school' when the rotten so-and-so's hit you with Sats Tests! These were never meant to be a 'big thing' and at Hackthorn we have always tried to keep the whole process of 'the week' as low-key as possible, so much so that the children look forward to the 'toast days'. It's great, as well, to see how supportive they are of one another when the time comes to put pencil to paper and just do their best. You can read about it all you like, but there really is no substitute for first-hand experience, and we're always happy to welcome anyone who wants to find out more about the 'Hackthorn Way' so why not contact the school on 01673 860295 to arrange a visit or to request a School Brochure, or have a look round our website at www.hackthorn.lincs.sch.uk

The Chairperson, Susan Thornalley, gave a comprehensive and well received report of the year's activities and the financial accounts were presented and approved. We are pleased to announce that the balance of funds has increased this year. Fund raising events have been very successful over the year, with musical, dramatic and social evenings, all amply fortified with tasty suppers! In addition, various clubs and classes, including yoga, singing, IT and poetry, have been enjoyed. The Hall has also morphed into a vintage teashop and the General Election polling station and has hosted various private events/parties. It is gratifying that hire of the Hall has extended this year. The vast amount of work involved in grant applications has paid off, enabling excellent improvements to the fabric and decor of the Hall. If you haven't done so already, do come along to take a look; we're very proud of it! A further - imminent - grant will enable the purchase of new curtains. A legacy willed to the Village Hall by a former, well loved resident, Ellen Aichroth, specifically to provide gates for the entrance to improve safety for children during events, will see those gates in place this summer. A new member of the committee, Debs Kealey, was warmly welcomed and other members voted back into post. The Chair reported that quite a lot had been achieved in the year - the plaque to celebrate Flo James' 100th birthday had eventually been placed on the school wall, pavements had been resurfaced around the bends by the church, the war memorial had been refurbished in time for November 11th last year. The anonymous donor who had paid for the new foundation was thanked for their very generous donation as were the public who had raised enough money to cover the cost of repairing the memorial. The community park is getting nearer to coming into fruition. It is hoped that 3.85 acres will be handed over to Owmby and Normanby Parish Councils before the year end. The Chair thanked DC Summers for all the help he has given the Parish Councils in getting this land. The church wall is still in a very bad state of repair, and the repairs which were done a few years ago were not good and make the wall look dreadful. It was agreed to contact Anna Grieve once again to see if this wall can be repaired to a really high standard. DC Summers said he would help with this matter and would contact the Redundant Churches as they are the owners of the wall. The financial statement was available for comments, though there were not any. The balance figure at year end 31st March 2015 is £3,471.87. DC Summers said there is money available for grants for community projects - all one has to do is apply while the money is there. WLDC are not raising Council Tax for the foreseeable future as they are making sure their assets work for them. Talk of losing smaller District Councils is still in the pipeline. This includes the County Council who have been told they may lose up to 6 Councillors. The County Council has had to raise taxes as they are still trying to save another £100m. The wind turbines in Normanby will not go ahead and the wind turbines at Hemswell are awaiting the result of the appeal. The road to Glentham is in a very dangerous condition. CC Strange said he would take this matter up. The police could not attend the meeting but had sent in a report which had 3 incidents: Suspicious Circumstance - 2 males and one female seen talking to children through school fence - residents asked to remain vigilant; a dog on dog attack - owners must keep their pets under control at all times; anti social behaviour relating to the road closure some motorists got annoyed with the workmen and tried to barge their way through. The Annual Parish Meeting closed at 8.17, when the Annual Parish Meeting started. Cllr Roy Bellamy was re-elected as Chairman, with Cllr Mrs Barbara Moulson being re-elected as Vice-Chair. Cllrs Ken Green and Mrs Adele Crowther returned as unopposed Councillors and Cllr David Barton-Smith has joined the Council, also unopposed. We have been very lucky to have two ladies offered themselves forward to be co-opted as Councillors. They are Mrs Mags Perry and Mrs Claire Parr, who were given a very warm welcome. Finances: Insurance £144.59; ½ cemetery rates £42.96; cemetery grass cutting £88.08; hire of school hall £30. These were proposed by Cllrs Mrs B Moulson and Mrs A Crowther seconded. Planning application 132247 - Mr A Coles' revised plan was discussed and it was agreed the Clerk write to WLDC saying they would rather the proposed property was more in keeping with surrounding properties. Date and venue of next meeting will be Wednesday July 15th in the offices of Skittlestone Cottage. Signpost 15

The Council has been informed by WLDC that it falls in the uncontested section, and the Council will welcome 2 new Councillors to the meetings from May - Mr and Mrs Smith. There are still 2 vacancies to be filled and interested parishioners are invited to speak to current Councillors or the Clerk for information. The newly proposed site for the bus shelter has temporarily been postponed due to Highways concerns, however Councillors agreed to defer this to the July Parish Council meeting and carry out a site meeting in order to try to iron out any concerns. Whilst WLDC have given the Council permission to remove a Whitebeam tree in the children's playground, there was some public opposition to the plan, and again discussions on this subject will taken up in the July Parish Council meeting. The Council agreed to 2 donations - 1 to Lincoln & Lindsey Blind Society and 1 to CAB - both in the sum of £50.00. Cllr Shaw reported that the Church Clock is now up and running. The grass cutting season is now upon the parish and the contractor has been approved and grass cutting will be taking place over the next few months. The proposal to erect post fencing along of the edge of the village green was again discussed, and the Council noted the recommendations of the risk assessment - it was resolved by a majority vote that post fencing should not be erected. WELTON FAMILY HEALTH CENTRE NEWS PRIMARY CARE NAVIGATOR - We are lucky to have a Primary Care Navigator working alongside us to provide additional social support for our patients and their carers. It is the role of the Primary Care Navigator to pro-actively find and co-ordinate health, social care and volunteer services to people with long term conditions. If you feel that you would benefit from this service, please speak to one of the doctors for a referral. DNA's (Did Not Attends) - In April, a total of 41 hours of clinical time was lost due to patients not attending for their appointments - almost 12 appointments per day! Please try to help us by cancelling appointments as soon as you realise they are no longer required. FRIENDS AND FAMILY TEST - We are asking Patients to take part in the National Friends and Family Test (FFT) survey, which simply asks Patients if they would recommend us to their friends and family. You can complete a form online, via our website or in the Practice. We are also sending out forms with prescriptions from this month. Please return all forms to the surgery. WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK - The Practice has a Facebook page and website where we will try and keep you up to date with all things current in the Practice. The website address is www.weltonsurgery.co.uk and you can search Welton Surgery on Facebook. Please have a look! ELECTRONIC PRESCRIPTION SERVICE - The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is a new NHS service. It gives Patients the chance to change how we send your prescription to the place you choose to get your medicines from. This means that if you collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP you will not have to visit your GP Practice to pick up the paper prescription. Instead, your GP will send it electronically to the place you choose, saving you time. You will have a choice of where to collect your medicines from and you may not have to wait as long at the pharmacy as there will be time for your repeat prescriptions to be ready before you arrive. You can nominate your pharmacy with us or at your chosen pharmacy. For more information visit www.hscic.gov.uk/epspatients or see us in Practice. EPS goes live from Monday 11th May 2015. STAFF TRAINING - In order to ensure our staff and doctors remain up to date; we will be closed for Training from 1pm on Tuesday 16th June. Emergency cover is provided during this time by calling the usual surgery number (01673 862232 and selecting Option 1). Nadina Prestedge WELTON PATIENT AND DOCTORS ASSOCIATION The PDA plant stall at the May Day event in Welton was very well supported. Thank you to all who came along and bought from us. I think the excellent weather was a bonus and brought people out to enjoy the day. We raised a total of £170.40 which was an excellent result. Last year we wrote a successful funding bid to IGAS which resulted in a grant of just over £3000. We used the money to have a dedicated computer programme written by local firm SCIS. All transport requests are now booked through this new system which has replaced our very outdated and unreliable fax machine and diary method of doing things. Spurred on by our success last year we decided to apply to IGAS again this year and were delighted to receive a grant of £1500 towards the purchase of some new wheelchairs. We have purchased 6 new light weight wheelchairs which will be available for loan from the surgery within the next 2 weeks. It might be a good time to remind everyone that the wheelchairs in the surgery are available to loan, either short term or for longer periods of time. We ask for a £50 deposit, preferably a cheque, against any damage caused. This will be returned when the wheelchair is brought back assuming the chair is still in good repair. The chair is free for an initial 2 week period and is then charged at £2 per day. Any money made is given back to the PDA and used towards the cost of maintenance. We are still looking to obtain a shed to use for storage of PDA equipment. The maximum size would be 12ft x 8ft but 10ft x 8ft would be equally as good. We can afford a small payment but obviously a donation would be preferred! October may seem a long way off but preparations are under way for the PDA Autumn Fayre. If anyone with a local business would like to offer a prize for the raffle please get in touch with me (Janet 862570) it would help the PDA and give you some free publicity! I will be getting the raffle tickets printed in June and the top 3 prizes are listed together with the name of the donor. We will also be asking for donations for the various stalls - bric a brac, books, tombola, bottles, cakes etc. More information next month. 26 Signpost

Owmby Group of Parishes Book of Favourite Recipes 2nd Edition Dear Readers of the Signpost, Some of you may remember the first edition of the ‘Owmby Group of Parishes Book of Favourite Recipes’ indeed some of you may even have a copy of it, well I think it is time that we all pulled together to create the 2nd edition in order to raise money for our local churches. Some newer residents to our parish may have no idea what I am on about but the idea is to create a parish recipe book full of all our favourite recipes for cakes, biscuits and desserts. I would like people to contribute recipes for cakes, biscuits and desserts in order to create the recipe book. It doesn’t matter whether the recipe has been passed down the family from your great grandmother or one of your own favourites. Also if you have family and friends that don’t live in our parish and they wish to contribute recipes to the book then they are more than welcome to. Every day baking tips are also welcome. A NOTE FOR CONTRIBUTORS: I would like to avoid reprinting recipes that were in the first edition however good the recipes may have been and it would be nice to share them with the newer residents of our parish it will be nice to create a new book. Also if you know the date and source of the recipe you contribute then it will be printed with the recipe. I am also looking for local businesses to volunteer to sell the recipe book once it is printed. If you wish to contribute recipes or baking tips for the book then please send them to: Russ Graham, Brookfield, Saxby, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire LN8 2DH Or they can be emailed to me at [email protected] I am aiming to start selling the book from 1st February 2016 so all recipes should be submitted by 31st October 2015. Many thanks for your time and happy baking to you all! THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH You will never be sorry: for thinking before acting, for hearing before judging, for forgiving your enemies, for being candid and frank, for helping a fallen brother, for being honest in business, for thinking before speaking, for standing by your principles, for stopping your ears to gossip, for bridling a slanderous tongue, for sympathising with the afflicted, for being courteous and kind to all. The latest date for entries to the July 2015 Signpost is Monday the 15th of June at 6:00 p.m.
