I wonder what you might be looking forward to during the summer months? A bit of time out? Some time away? Some time spent outdoors, weather permitting? As someone who tends to have several books on the go at once, I'm hoping to finish off some of the titles that occupy my desk and my bedside table. One of those books is by the priest John Davies and is titled “Walking the M62”. There is clearly more to this than the title suggests, and from a health and safety point-of-view it is necessary to offer some further explanation! And so as John records for us: I spent the whole of September and October 2007 walking across the north of England, a coast-to-coast walk from Hornsea in the east to Crosby in the west, for the most part following quite closely the route of the M62 trans-Pennine motorway… I fantasised that I might strengthen my understanding of the relationships between people and places by preparing to spend days in the company of people en-route who knew their place - people with local knowledge who would walk with me and share that knowledge through our conversation. The book, which is a version of daily entries on the website Walking the M62*, is a fascinating read and I appreciate John's emphasis on celebrating the local, the stories that people might share, and the discovery of so many areas of beauty and interest that might sometimes be taken for granted. His work puts one in mind of that now-popular phrase in which one “seeks heaven in the ordinary”. A similar work, titled “Beating the Bounds - Walks and Rides in Lincolnshire in the Millennium Year”, sees its author Terry Miller offer “an informed and gentle appreciation of the life and land of Lincolnshire and an attractive celebration of its unique character” courtesy of his text, photographs, drawings and paintings**. Here Terry also captures the importance of a sense of place, taking care to listen to the daily rhythm of a place, to meet its people, hear of its history and celebrate its life. This brings me on nicely to the Lincolnshire Show which takes place towards the end of June, on the 24th and the 25th. As the organisers suggest, “experience a true celebration of rural Lincolnshire with an eclectic mix of breathtaking entertainment, food, shopping, music, horticulture and farm life”, making this another celebration of place -past, present and future - and the gifts of its people. As Rector, and as someone with farming connections, I am delighted to have again been asked to offer a blessing on the second day of this year's Show, and I hope that this year's event will offer an opportunity to meet with folk, to reflect on the beauty of our world and celebrate a sense of place. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area and to live alongside such wonderful people. We pray for those affected by the devastation of two earthquakes in Nepal. We pray for those who have lost family and friends, their homes and livelihoods. And thank God for the relief agencies at work there.
