June 2015 Issue 3

The Owmby Group of Parishes Magazine Volume 24 June 2015 Issue 3 A Very Big THANK YOU The whole Signpost team would like to thank everyone who attended the coffee morning in aid of our parish magazine - Signpost. A grand sum of £513.00 was raised and we would like to express our grateful thanks to those of you who generously gave of your time, supplied delicious cakes to eat and to sell, donated splendid raffle prizes, gave cash donations if unable to come to the event and finally, actually came along on the morning to support us. We hope that you enjoyed the event as well. Thanks to Judith for organising the event and hope to see you at the next one. DEANERY CONFIRMATION SERVICE 6PM ON SUNDAY, 12 JULY 2015 AT ST PETER'S, GLENTHAM We look forward to welcoming Bishop David and friends from across Lawres Deanery to our benefices for this very special service. If you are interested in being confirmed at this service in July then please do contact the Revd Adrian Smith for a chat and for some further details. http://owmbygroup.co.uk/signpost 2 Signpost FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends, Can it really be June already? I wonder what you might be looking forward to during the summer months? A bit of time out? Some time away? Some time spent outdoors, weather permitting? As someone who tends to have several books on the go at once, I'm hoping to finish off some of the titles that occupy my desk and my bedside table. One of those books is by the priest John Davies and is titled “Walking the M62”. There is clearly more to this than the title suggests, and from a health and safety point-of-view it is necessary to offer some further explanation! And so as John records for us: I spent the whole of September and October 2007 walking across the north of England, a coast-to-coast walk from Hornsea in the east to Crosby in the west, for the most part following quite closely the route of the M62 trans-Pennine motorway… I fantasised that I might strengthen my understanding of the relationships between people and places by preparing to spend days in the company of people en-route who knew their place - people with local knowledge who would walk with me and share that knowledge through our conversation. The book, which is a version of daily entries on the website Walking the M62*, is a fascinating read and I appreciate John's emphasis on celebrating the local, the stories that people might share, and the discovery of so many areas of beauty and interest that might sometimes be taken for granted. His work puts one in mind of that now-popular phrase in which one “seeks heaven in the ordinary”. A similar work, titled “Beating the Bounds - Walks and Rides in Lincolnshire in the Millennium Year”, sees its author Terry Miller offer “an informed and gentle appreciation of the life and land of Lincolnshire and an attractive celebration of its unique character” courtesy of his text, photographs, drawings and paintings**. Here Terry also captures the importance of a sense of place, taking care to listen to the daily rhythm of a place, to meet its people, hear of its history and celebrate its life. This brings me on nicely to the Lincolnshire Show which takes place towards the end of June, on the 24th and the 25th. As the organisers suggest, “experience a true celebration of rural Lincolnshire with an eclectic mix of breathtaking entertainment, food, shopping, music, horticulture and farm life”, making this another celebration of place -past, present and future - and the gifts of its people. As Rector, and as someone with farming connections, I am delighted to have again been asked to offer a blessing on the second day of this year's Show, and I hope that this year's event will offer an opportunity to meet with folk, to reflect on the beauty of our world and celebrate a sense of place. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area and to live alongside such wonderful people. I hope that you enjoy these summer months, and with every blessing to you all, Adrian PRAYER FOCUS FOR JUNE This month we focus on people in distress in the world. We pray for those affected by the devastation of two earthquakes in Nepal. We pray for those who have lost family and friends, their homes and livelihoods. And thank God for the relief agencies at work there. Also for the migrants escaping from their homelands for fear of persecution and for the plight of those abandoned at sea by people smugglers. *http://johndavies.typepad.com/walking_the_m62/ **Nth Degree Publishing, Waddington, Lincoln (ISBN: 0 9540336 0 4) Signpost 3 THANK YOU CHRISTIAN AID SOUP LUNCH 15TH MAY IN SPRIDLINGTON VILLAGE HALL Many thanks to all those who made delicious home-made soups and for all who helped. The hopes of man is a shower of raindrops We drink in the moment yet die of thirst. The hopes of man is as the sun's heat, Hot for the moment cooled in the cloud. The hope of man is as ice on a pond Yet it melts in the warmth of the sun. Our hope is as a rainbow so lovely to see! But in moments it fades away from view. The hope of man is born in the womb Riches achieved then stolen! Gone! The hopes of man is like visions of glory Night time dreams he drift's along.
