Abstract This paper engages with ‘Frankenstein’ as a narrative structure in Indian popular cinema, in the context of posthumanism. Scholarship pertaining to monsters/monstrosity in Indian films has generally been addressed within the horror genre. However, the present paper aspires to understand monstrosity/monsters as a repercussion of science and technology (S&T) through the cinematic depiction of Frankenstein-like characters, thus shifting the locus of examining monstrosity from the usual confines of horror to the domain of science fiction. The paper contends Enthiran/Robot (Shankar 2010 Tamil/Hindi) as an emblematic instance of posthuman monstrosity that employs a Frankenstein narrative. The paper hopes to bring out the significance of cinematic imagination concerning posthuman monstrosity, to engage with collective social fears and anxieties about various cutting-edge technologies as well as other socio-cultural concerns and desires at the interface of S&T, embodiment and the society/nation. These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. Spectacle spaces: Production of caste in recent Tamil films To foreground the study of caste in Tamil films and to link it with the rise of ‘caste- gestapo’ networks that execute honour killings and murders as a reaction to ‘inter-caste love dramas’ in Tamil Nadu,1 let me narrate a political incident that occurred in Tamil Nadu – that of the formation of a socio-political movement against Dalit assertion in December 2012. -

UTV announces its next Tamil film ‘SIGARAM THODU’ Chennai, 2nd January 2013: UTV Motion Pictures today announced its next home production in Tamil ‘Sigaram Thodu’ which will be written and directed by Gaurav of ‘Thoonga Nagaram’ fame and will star Vikram Prabhu in the lead. After ‘Settai’ (remake of Hindi super hit film Delhi Belly) starring Arya, Santhanam, Premgi, Hansika, Anjali and Nasser and directed by R. Kannan this will be UTV’s next Tamil release this year. The pre-production work for ‘Sigaram Thodu’ has commenced from today and the film’s shooting is expected to begin from April 2013. The other cast and crew is under finalization and will be announced shortly. “As a Studio it has been our constant endeavour to bring across the right mix of content for our consumers like we have done with our Hindi slate.
