Kahu calls out to them, making copying the sounds of the whales she had heard earlier in the movies in a tone of warning. Then the orcas dive away. This time, Koro warms a little bit towards her, but only by a small, barely discernable margin. Rawiri though grows closer and closer to his little niece, bringing her to work with him and making sure she does not become too bored staying at home with Nanny Flowers. Whenever he would see her though, he would yell at her to go away. Thus she did not get to see when Koro took the boys out to sea to explain to them the sacred nature of their fishing grounds. These grounds, he said, were all known and marked by their ancestors. They try not to enter the grounds of other people and they seek protection for their own grounds from the whales and other sea creatures. As Koro explains this he becomes more and more sad, pointing out that man has become so tempted by commercial gain that he overfishes and maybe even hunt whales. Now, Koro says, their sea has become empty. That evening, Koro assembles the boys again to recount to them a tale of huge import. He tells them of a time when he was young boy and when whaling was a huge pastime of the people of . His own uncle would go whaling and one time brought him along. He narrates the tale of that hunt: the beauty of the whales, their prestige, their power and then the harpooning and the struggle and the death and then the skinning and carving of the whale. Kahu, hearing this dark tale after sneaking near to the room, cries out in terror and sadness. The next day though, Rawiri finds Kahu outside, standing calmly near the shore while three silver shapes leapt by her in the sea. In this section Rawiri explains more about the history of his ancestors and the genealogy of his people, thus giving greater characterization to the Maori people as a whole. For them, lineage is a living link to the past, it is how tradition and culture is passed on—most importantly it is how chieftaincy and leadership is passed on. He is caught between the cultural ideal of male leadership and the practical reality of only having female descendants; thus there are two elements of the culture seemingly coming to a conflict, and this is what weighs so heavily on Koro and what eventually forces him to make a choice and develop and mature. This importance of lineage is exemplified elsewhere as well. Thus through the emphasis placed on genealogy, the reader learns more about the general thought process of this people, and the conflicts which weigh on them because they see lineage as a living connection to their past. He becomes more than just a stubborn mean old great-grandfather. Instead the reader can start to see a man weighed down by worries in an almost tragic way. Although he is not unambiguously heroic, through the deeper characterization he does begin to show some characteristics of the literary archetype of the tragic hero. He is the leader of his people; he is weighed down by huge worries and responsibilities. He is doing all he can to solve those and to preserve what he has learned from his own teachers by teaching and striving. And most importantly--in terms of this literary archetype--he has a fatal flaw, which is his unwillingness to break the rules of his tradition at all, even in order to preserve that tradition. Yet he is unable to accept any of that because he cannot break the rule of patriarchal leadership—even though breaking that single rule would likely lead to a better outcome for his people. The author slowly builds up the different signs of her greatness and the plot begins to gather pace as step-by-step Kahu comes closer to her fate. He is certain that through a gruelling process of teaching the ancient chants, tribal lore and warrior techniques, the future leader of their tribe will be revealed to him. The Whale Rider Part 2: Summer Summary and Analysis | GradeSaver

Incredibly touching, deeply moving, wonderfuly acted, and beautiful cinematography, it's not small surprise why this film is a winner. Pai is a complete scene stealer, and it's finally nice to see Cliff Curtis show off some true acting skills. For Cliff who has played everything from a tattoed Hispanic gang leader in Training Day, to a Arab villan in the Majestic, it's pleasing to see him in a character that mirror's his true national identity since he is actually a New Zealander and not a Hispanic or Arab person. He must be incredibly proud to be part of this special film. The actors who played the grand parents are exceptional particularly the stubborn grandfather who's demands Pai keep away from all male activities The grandfather's insistence to teach a young group of boys in a special school how to be chiefs, and Pai's insistence to learn without her gradfather's knowledge provides most of the light humour in the film. Amazing film easily one of the best of the year Rating 9 out of Prime Video has you covered this holiday season with movies for the family. Here are some of our picks to get you in the spirit. Paikea Rawiri Paratene Koro Vicky Haughton Nanny Flowers Cliff Curtis Porourangi Grant Roa Uncle Rawiri Mana Taumaunu Hemi Rachel House Shilo Taungaroa Emile Willie Tammy Davis Dog Mabel Wharekawa Miro Tahei Simpson However she finds that she cannot bear to leave the sea as the whale seems to be calling her back, tells her father to turn the car back and returns home. Pai herself is interested in the leadership, learning traditional songs and dances, but is given little encouragement by her grandfather. Koro decides to form a cultural school for the village boys, hoping to find a new leader. He teaches the boys to use a fighting stick. This is traditionally reserved for males. One of the students, Hemi, is also sympathetic towards her, but Koro is enraged when he finds out, particularly when she wins her taiaha fight against Hemi. Pai, in an attempt to bridge the rift that has formed, invites Koro to be her guest of honour at a concert of Mori chants that her school is putting on. Unknown to all, she had won an inter-school speech contest with a touching dedication to Koro and the traditions of the village. Koro sees it as a sign of his failure and despairs further. Also, the largest whale traditionally belongs to the legendary Paikea. But when Koro walks away, she climbs onto the back of the largest whale and coaxes it to re-enter the ocean. The whale leads the entire pod back into the sea; Paikea nearly drowns in the process. When she goes out to sea, Nanny Flowers shows Koro the whale tooth which Pai had previously recovered. When Pai is found and brought to the hospital, Koro declares her the leader and asks her forgiveness. Most heroes are big strong men, or mythical creatures that have thousands of stories and tales written about them. This hero is an unlikely one, a small girl, from a small tribe, in a small village in New Zealand. Paikea is a small girl that is 13 years old, and is a direct descendant of Paikea, the original whale rider. On her journey to become the leader of the tribe, she comes across numerous amounts of challenges from her grandfather, Koro. In the Paikea tribe, only the first-born son should be the leader of the tribe, which proves difficult for Paikea, since she is a female. Her journey begins when she does not even know anything about becoming leader; she is living a normal life, doing her school work and living with her grandparents. At school, she is the most interested in Paikea culture and origins, unlike the other boys. Eventually, her birthfather, Porourangi, comes back and describes his current situation in life; how he lives in Germany and has a great life with a new woman, who is pregnant. She leaves with her father, but on their way to the airport, she suddenly decides to turn around and return to her grandparents, for she cannot leave them. When she returns, her grandfather acts as if nothing has happened, and focuses more on the task at hand, finding somebody to lead the tribe. Her father refuses leadership, and returns to Germany, but Paikea is interested, even though she is a female and it goes against all tradition. Her grandfather, who is her Herald in a way, condemns her for issues within the tribe. Eventually, he begins teaching classes that teach the young boys how to act like true tribesmen. Paikea is interested, but she cannot join since she is a girl. Instead, she spies on them and does everything the class does, except by herself. This novel unfolds the history of the Maori Tribe that by tradition the new chief would be the first born son directly descended from their ancient ancestor Paikea. Koro attempts to discover their new leader through a cultural reform school solely for the first-born sons of every family. However, Koro fails to notice that Pai, although an eleven year old girl, is destined to be the new leader. The story takes place in New Zealand where the Maori people of a small village claim descent from the Whale Rider, Paikea. By tradition the heir to the leadership of the Maori tribe has to be the first born son- a direct patrilineal descendant of Paikea. The girl grows up being certain of her calling to be the next tribe leader. Both are signs of internalized oppression.
