Jan and Phil Surprise Wichita Man with a Car

Wichita, Kan. — The calendar says June, but Christmas will come early for Cleet McGhee when Jan Harrison and Phil Thompson of the Jan and Phil Show on 104.5 Wichita present McGhee with a vehicle on Friday.

As reported by Dion Leffler in the Wichita Eagle last Friday, McGhee, a Wichita man who successfully battled bone cancer and lost his kidney function in the process, had his 2001 Lincoln Town Car stolen. It was the first car the 60-year-old former restaurant cook had ever owned and had become a lifeline for transporting him to and from dialysis three times a week.

After returning from dialysis on June 14, McGhee was in pain and needed a nap. He returned to the motel room he calls home and, because it was a hot day, left the door to his room ajar. Surveillance video shows a couple casing the parking lot, then a woman entering McGhee’s motel room, taking his keys and stealing his car.

Upon hearing about McGhee’s situation, Harrison and Thompson wanted to help. They spoke with local car dealership Rusty Eck Ford, which generously agreed to supply McGhee with a car free of charge.

The dealership will deliver the vehicle to the radio station on Friday, June 27, where it will be presented to McGhee just after 8 a.m. “We’re very excited to be able to help Mr. McGhee and we are so grateful to Rusty Eck Ford, who is providing Mr. McGhee with a vehicle somewhat similar to the one he lost,” Harrison said.
