I saw the 1996 TV movie "London Suite," and I thought it was so witty and funny that I set out to read the play. I wish I hadn't, because it was nothing like the movie. First of all, the first act in the play was not in the movie, and was replaced with the story of honeymooners, which was much funnier. The other three acts were in the movie, and while the dialogue was somewhat similar, it lost its charm on the pages. I do not recommend. See all 1 customer reviews...     Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

    London Suite By Neil Simon London Suite consists of four one-act plays that take place in the 1980s, in an old but very fashionable hotel in London, much like the Connaught Hotel in Mayfair. The Connaught, originally built in the 19th century, still stands today, a testament to the splendour of the period. Its décor, although remodelled many times, still has the charm and ambience of the original. It is far from one of the larger hotels in London but its clientele look for atmosphere, comfort and privacy, standing out from its glitzy contemporaries. In Settling Accounts, the suite is occupied by an inebriated Welsh writer who is holding his long time business manager - caught absconding with the writer's money - at gun point. An American widow and her daughter then take over the suite in Going Home. At the daughter's insistence, mother spends her last evening in London with a rich Scotsman. In Sidney and Diana, an Oscar winning actress and her divorced husband are seeing each other for the first time in years.     Fauquier Community Theatre's Spotlight Painting Stories for 33 Years February, 2011 In This Issue California Suite Roundtable Discussion Meet FCT's Business Sponsors Neil Simon Spotlight On FCT Seeking Treasurer College Scholarships "California Suite" Ready to Shine at FCT Neil Simon's "California Suite" will open its run at the Fauquier Community Theater this Friday, Feb. 25. The play features a perfectly balanced mix of comedy and poignancy as the stories of four sets of travelers unfold within a California hotel suite. Among the characters are Hannah Warren from New York who, in the first episode, has come to the hotel to discuss child custody details with her ex- husband. The second episode features a British actress nominated for an Academy Award. She is preparing to attend the ceremony with her husband, who is hiding a secret life from the spotlight. Two doctors and their spouses who are in the midst of a less-than-idyllic vacation take the stage for the third episode, while the final vignette features a married man on a solo trip whose situation becomes comically complicated when both a hooker and then his wife show up in his suite unexpectedly.
