Hours after getting the initial call June 26 about a disturbance at a residence on H.A. Varnum Road, deputies caught up with Randall Pitts on Boneyard Road off CR 69, just inside Jackson County. He was sitting in the driver’s seat of his black Pontiac Sunfire, which was parked in the middle of the road. When a deputy, using a loud speaker, urged him to resolve the situation without anyone being hurt, Pitts replied: “Just let me die in peace.” Moments later, Pitts sped off, going eastbound on Boneyard Road. After driving about a mile, he came to a roadblock set up by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Pitts stopped in the middle of the road. Deputies drew their guns and took cover. RANDALL PITTS Pitts ignored deputies as they repeatedly attempted to talk him into peacefully resolving the standoff. -

April, 1972 A Message from the Chairman, Title Insurance and Underwriters Section APRIL, 1972 The recent Mid-Winter Conference of the Association generated the largest registration of all mid year meetings to date. Obviously, many factors contributed to this manifestation of interest and de sire for participation in the affair of our Association, including the attractiveness of a dynamic eco nomic and cultural center such as the beautiful city of Atlanta. However, I rather suspect that the greatest motivating force that served to stimulate this mass migration of title men and women to Atlanta was their sincere concern over the unprecedented and undeserved attacks recently directed against our industry from the Capitol Hill scene, and their firm resolve to unite in its support and defense. Those of us who are cognizant of the substantive and meaningful contributions made by our in dustry to the general economic progress of this nation; who understand the complexities involved in the ownership, transfer and financing of interests in real estate and the consequent need for the precise and invaluable services and assurances afforded through our industry endeavors; and who are acquainted with the dedication and professional integrity that characterize the overwhelming majority of our individual members, should not hesitate to make our beliefs known and our voices heard. The current national interest in consumerism is sound and logical and is certainly compatible with the precepts and principles that have historically undergirded our industry. Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Harold Wheeler PERSON Wheeler, Harold Alternative Names: Harold Wheeler; William Harold Wheeler, Jr. Life Dates: July 14, 1943- Place of Birth: St. Louis, Missouri, USA Residence: Encino, CA Occupations: Music Composer; Music Producer Biographical Note Producer and composer Harold Wheeler was born William Harold Wheeler, Jr. on July 14, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri to Roxetta McGee and William Harold Wheeler, Sr. At Antioch Baptist Church, where the members included Chuck Berry and Ike and Tina Turner, Wheeler played the piano for Sunday school at age five. Wheeler attended Turner Branch Elementary School and graduated from Sumner High School in 1960. He then attended Howard University, where he earned his B.A. degree in 1964. Wheeler earned his 1960. He then attended Howard University, where he earned his B.A. degree in 1964. Wheeler earned his M.A. degree in music from Manhattan School of Music in 1968. From 1968 to 1971, Wheeler worked as an assistant program director for CBS-FM Radio in New York. In 1971, Wheeler left CBS in order to compose his own music and coach other performers. That same year, composer Burt Bacharach hired Wheeler for his new musical Promises, Promises, making him the youngest conductor on Broadway. Wheeler was soon working with Michael Bennett composing dance music for A Chorus Line, going on to work with Bennett on Dreamgirls, Coco and SCANDAL. In 1971, Wheeler worked as musical director for Melvin Van Peeble’s groundbreaking musical Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death, and for Don’t Play Us Cheap in 1972. -

STEVE EMBER: Welcome to THE MAKING OF A NATION -- American history in VOA Special English. I'm Steve Ember. This week in our series, we look back at some of the social issues and cultural changes in America in the nineteen seventies and eighties. (MUSIC) In some ways, the nineteen eighties seemed like the opposite of the nineteen sixties. The sixties were years of protest for social justice and change. Many Americans demonstrated against the Vietnam War. Blacks demonstrated for civil rights. Women demonstrated for equality. Many people welcomed new social programs created by the government. By the nineteen eighties, however, many people seemed more concerned with themselves than with helping society. To them, success was measured mainly by how much money a person made. People wanted to live the good life, and that took money. 2 The changes started to become evident during the nineteen seventies. For a while, these years brought a continuation of the social experiments and struggles of the sixties. But then people began to see signs of what society would be like in the eighties. There were a number of reasons for this change. One reason was the end to America's military involvement in Vietnam after years of war. -
God's Favorite Continues at the Three Notch Theatre
God’s Favorite continues at the Three Notch Theatre Posted by TBN Editor On 04/21/2018 Lexington Park, MD - God’s Favorite, a three-act comedy by Neil Simon, runs through April 22 with Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees beginning at 3:30 p.m. presented by the Newtowne Players (NTP). Loosely based on the Biblical Book of Job, the play opened on Broadway on December 11, 1974 and ran for 119 performances with Vincent Gardenia as Joe, and Charles Nelson Reilly as Sidney Lipton. It is set in early March of 1975 within a lavish North Shore Long Island mansion (beautifully re-created for this production by NPT Board of Directors member Dave Kyser, and longtime NTP volunteer Linda Sanborn – at least 2 of Linda’s paintings adorn the set’s living room walls; she has painted over 25 sets at Three Notch Theatre). The mansion is inhabited by the pious Joe (Robert Rausch), his long-suffering wife, Rose (Robin Finnacom), the “twinsies” – Sarah (a perky Mallory Turvey-Manthorne) and Ben (a stoic Lewis Beckley) – , “prodigal son” David (Nick Wood), along with Mady (Millie Coryer-Dhu), the maid, and Morris (Larry Silvestro), the butler. The Act I and Act II set depicts a cozy, comfy, living room with a sofa, a lighted fireplace, a well-stocked bar, and curtained French doors. The play begins on one cold and snowy midnight when a suspected burglar (James LePore) turns out to be messenger-from-God Sidney Lipton, who has come to offer plenty of temptations to Joe to entice him to renounce God. -
