The preliminary numbers show good success and in black even after repaying back FEZANA the subsidy amount that FEZANA gave to each youth participants. I congratulate the Youth Chairs for the success. I hope future North American Congress Hosts (Adult and Youth) will learn from this and keep the cost at minimum for all forth coming congress. At the World Congress in Dubai, FEZANA is sponsoring the Khorshed Jungalwala Lecture Series and also participating in various sessions including a joint session "Community Cares" with BPP, FEZANA, WZO, ZTFE, ZTFHK, Australian Zoroastrian Associations and Zoroastrian Association Singapore. Our Youth is also actively participating in the Youth Leadership Enhancement Program (YLEP) and will be presenting their projects at the congress. (http://wzcongress.org/events.htm) The FEZANA/WZCC jointly sponsored Zoroastrian Stimulus Plan - A YLEP Project for Private Job Search & Career Counseling Service, with joint efforts of Jasmine Dadachanji (Victoria, BC), Eric Engineer (Dallas, TX), and Carl Irani (Orlando, FL) has been very well received and supported by our community. The project has excelled and exceeded all expectations. (http://fezana.org ) While we see some light of hope and improvements on the financial markets, I once again take this opportunity to thank Mr. Kavasji Dadachanji, FEZANA's financial and investment consultant for his timely advice which allowed us to convert all our investments in to cash just in time before the market crash and minimized any losses. Mr. Dadachanji has now retired and stopped his practice. We wish Kavasji and his family the very best. The Finance committee has now appointed Mr. Adil Masani as our new financial consultant. I welcome Mr. Masani to FEZANA family and look forward to working with him. Acknowledging the problem and identifying its extent and ramifications was the first step which was articulated in the FALL 2013 issue of the FEZANA Journal. More importantly what do we need to do to reverse the trend or at least to stabilize or stop its rapid decline. A cross section of the North American Zarathushti population was surveyed for their opinion: first generation, next generation, intermarried, intra married, young, old, male, female, Iranian Zarathushtis, Parsi Zarathushtis. We received a plethora of information, laments as well as creative thoughts. Cognizant of the fact that by adding all this information to the printed issue would increase the printing and mailing costs when our subscriptions are declining we are trying a new hybrid approach. We are placing on the FEZANA website (www.fezana.org ) the addendum Part 1 containing the contributions of 34 First generation Zarathushtis and Part 2 containing the contributions of 34 next generation Zarathushtis .

  • Monstrous Aunties: the Rabelaisian Older Asian Woman in British Cinema and Television Comedy
Monstrous Aunties: The Rabelaisian older Asian woman in British cinema and television comedy Estella Tincknell, University of the West of England Introduction Representations of older women of South Asian heritage in British cinema and television are limited in number and frequently confined to non-prestigious genres such as soap opera. Too often, such depictions do little more than reiterate familiar stereotypes of the subordinate ‘Asian wife’ or stage the discursive tensions around female submission and male tyranny supposedly characteristic of subcontinent identities. Such marginalisation is compounded in the relative neglect of screen representations of Asian identities generally, and of female and older Asian experiences specifically, within the fields of Film and Media analysis. These representations have only recently begun to be explored in more nuanced ways that acknowledge the complexity of colonial and post-colonial discoursesi. The decoupling of the relationship between Asian and Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage, together with the foregrounding of religious rather than national-colonial identities, has further rendered the topic more complex. Yet there is an exception to this tendency. In the 1990s, British comedy films and TV shows began to carve out a space in which transgressive representations of aging Asian women appeared. From the subversively mischievous Pushpa (Zohra Segal) in Gurinder Chadha’s debut feature, Bhaji on the Beach (1993), to the bickering ‘competitive mothers’ of the ground-breaking sketch show, Goodness, Gracious Me (BBC 1998 – 2001, 2015), together 1 with the sexually-fixated grandmother, Ummi (Meera Syal), in The Kumars at Number 42 (BBC, 2001-6; Sky, 2014), a range of comic older female figures have overturned conventional discourses.
