Doç. Hakan ġensoy (ĠTÜ) MAYIS 2010 FOREWORD This doctorate thesis, entitled ―Schumann‘s Miniature Piano Pieces which are related to Literary Ideas‖ was prepared at the I.T.Ü. Social Sciences Institute, Dr. Erol Üçer Center for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM). Only a few pieces of Schumann are known with their literary connections. In my research I wanted to focus on this relationship between music and literature, especially in his keyboard music. During the analysis, it is found that some specific musical characters rely on the figures of Florestan and Eusebius. -

Rates) PD Dr. Udo von der Burg (Schriftführer) Georg Freiherr von Humboldt-Dachroeden (Geschäftsführer) Das Schloss wurde unter der Regentschaft der Kurfürsten Karl Philipp und Karl Theodor in drei Bauperioden zwischen 1720 und 1760 erbaut und war Residenz der Kurfürsten von der Pfalz von 1720 bis 1777. Titelbild: Der Wasserturm ist das Wahrzeichen Mannheims. Erbaut 1886-1889 nach Plänen von dem Stuttgarter Architekten Gustav Halmhuber, der auch am Bau des Berliner Reichstags mitwirkte. Als Herzstück der zentralen Trinkwasserversorgung geplant und gebaut, diente er nach dem Bau des höher gelegenen Wasserturms im nördl. Stadtteil Luzenberg 1909 noch bis zum Jahr 2000 als Reservehochbehälter. Er ist 60 m hoch, hat einen Durchmesser von 19 m und fasst 2000 cbm Wasser. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wurde er 1963 originalgetreu rekonstruiert. Das Dach des Turmes bekrönt eine 3,50 m hohe Statue der Amphitrite, der Gattin des Meeresgottes Poseidon. Auch der weitere Bildschmuck und die Figuren am kleinen und am großen Becken nehmen diese Thematik auf: Wasser ist Leben und – speziell für Mannheim – die Grundlage für Schifffahrt und Handel. Mit seinem Ensemble aus Turm, Garten, Wasserbecken und der angrenzenden Festhalle sowie der Kunsthalle gilt der Friedrichsplatz als eine der schönsten Jugendstilanlagen Deutschlands. Growing Model of Performing Art Organizations: Checklist for Management Decisions Yuko Oki Kyoto Sangyo University, Kamigamo Motoyama, Kitaku, Kyoto, Japan After graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine arts and Music, Yuko Oki worked as a viola player in Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra. MBA and Ph, D. in international studies at Waseda University. Lecturer at Showa Music University and Kyoto Sangyo University, then become Associate Professor at Kyoto Sangyo University since 2005. Abstract In this paper I make checklist for management decisions for performing art organizations, through two case studies; Shiki Theatre Company and Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. By these case studies, I found 5 common stages of growing model for arts organizations according “Stage Gate Model” (Cooper, 1993). First stage is starting up period, Second stage is making solid contents and seeking core audience period, Third stage is pursuit originality and seeking new audience period. Fourth stage is strategic marketing for repeat audience and expanding activities including oversea countries. Fifth stage is trial of new fund raising and expanding business period. As in each stage, important issues of strategic management decisions are different; I pick up check items using Skill Readiness, Market Readiness, Commercial Readiness and Management Readiness of “Cloverleaf Model” (Heslop et al., 2001) including external and internal environment of the organizations. Introduction So far, research on the growth model for the management strategic decision has been mainly studied for the venture enterprise that aims to introducing their stocks to the public. Sample Q 1 of 22 1 Understanding Individualism and Collectivism at Gekidan Shiki The purpose of this study is to use the connection between language and culture to examine individualism and collectivism through musicals in modern day Japanese society. As Western musicals have grown in popularity over the past few decades in Japan, musicals are an interesting medium to examine this dynamic as Gekidan Shiki is a place where not only language and culture intersect, but also Western and Japanese culture intersect. Because language and culture are connected, musicals can be used as a medium to examine culture, specifically individualism and collectivism in Japan, since in recent years due to Westernization, how Japan should be ranked has become more and more ambiguous. A content analysis, examining the English lyrics and the Japanese lyrics of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid, was performed with both quantitative and qualitative components. The number of frequencies of individualism and collectivism in each musical in each respective language observed was tabulated. The results showed that individualism was maintained, but collectivism was maintained as well, which could show that Japanese culture has become more receptive towards individualism. However, since the demeanor of a Japanese person is still maintained, it shows that while Japan is more accepting of individualism, they still want their culture to stay somewhat intact. Literature Review Western musical theatre in Japan has become increasingly popular since the late 20th Century (Brandon). Gekidan Shiki, one of the most popular Westernstyle theatres in modernday Japan, holds over 3,000 performances per year of Japanese versions of Western musicals such as The Sound of Music and Chorus Line (“Shiki Theatre Company”). -

Pianist tied for 1st Place in the Piano Competition at CF Conference rom the moment we arrived in Calgary, we knew we were in for Fa great week. Th e smiling face of our “Conference Chauff eur” greeted us at the airport and after a scenic ride, we arrived at Cascade Hall at the University of Calgary. After getting settled into our accommodations, we attended the opening ceremonies where Convener Linda Kundert-Stoll introduced us to the fi rst of many “Yippees” and “Yahoos” identifying Calgary as the home of the world-famous Stampede. Th at evening, L - R: Patricia Frehlich - (Incoming CF Pres), Katherine Chi, native of Calgary and Marnie Hauschildt, Robert Biswas - 1st place winners of CF Competition, Victoria Warwick - (outgoing CF Pres). internationally known pianist, presented the opening musical event, a sterling recital of Mozart, Hetu and Schubert. (Katherine generously stepped in when the original artist, Roberto Plano was unable to perform.) After examining the schedule for the coming week, we quickly realized that we had to make some choices, as there was more than one event scheduled at the same time. Our Convention Bag contained an MYC yellow highlighter -- now we knew why! Many of us chose to attend the class by Seymour Bernstein, famous pianist and author from New York, who gave an entertaining master class where his musical wisdom was clearly displayed. Lunch was provided by RCM Examinations where the dynamic duo of Levene & Lopinski offi cially launched the new Piano Pedagogy program. -
