HoriPro Inc., along with our partners Saitama Arts Foundation and Tokyo Broadcasting System Television Inc., is delighted that we have once again been invited to the Lincoln Center Festival , this time to celebrate the 80th birthday of director, Yukio Ninagawa, who we consider to be one of the most prolific directors in Japanese theater history. For this special occasion, Mr. Ninagawa has chosen to direct Kafka on the Shore , written by one of the most acclaimed authors in Japan today, Haruki Murakami. After the production’s successful run in London this past May, Kafka on the Shore travels to Singapore and Seoul following its performances in New York. Even though Mr. Ninagawa has been unwell over the past year, he has continued to work diligently, rehearsing Kafka on the Shore and creating a new version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet —yet another celebratory piece for his 80th birthday. It is a true demonstration, if indeed we need one, of his continued vitality and how committed he continues to be to his art. Although Mr. Ninagawa is well on the way to recovery, his doctors will not yet permit him to travel abroad. While this is heartbreaking for him, as he has always traveled to New York with his company, this production was prepared in Japan with all our strength and heart under Mr. Ninagawa’s steady leadership, and we are honored that he has entrusted us to deliver it to you on his behalf. The research includes the analysis of newspaper coverage of the most significant sporting events in recent Japanese history, including the 2014 Koshien National High School Baseball Championships, the awarding of the People’s Honor Award, the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, wrestler Hakuho’s record breaking victories in the sumo ring, and the bidding process for the 2020 Olympic Games. 2054 Japanese language articles were examined by thematic analysis in order to identify the extent to which established themes of “Japaneseness” were reproduced or renegotiated in the coverage. The research contributes to a broader understanding of national identity negotiation by illustrating the manner in which established symbolic boundaries are reproduced in service of the nation, particularly via mass media. Although these were produced in Japanese and for the Japanese market, and reflect contemporary Japan’s social, cultural and political milieu, I argue that they not only articulate the concerns and desires of gay men and (other queer people) in Japan, but also that they reflect a transnational global gay culture and identity. The study focuses on the work of current Japanese writers and directors while taking into account a broad, historical view of male-male eroticism in Japan from the Edo era to the present. It addresses such issues as whether there can be said to be a Japanese gay identity; the circulation of gay culture across international borders in the modern period; and issues of representation of gay men in mainstream popular culture products. As has been pointed out by various scholars, many mainstream Japanese representations of LGBT people are troubling, whether because they represent “tourism”—they are made for straight audiences whose pleasure comes from being titillated by watching the exotic Others portrayed in them—or because they are made by and for a female audience and have little connection with the lives and experiences of real gay men, or because they circulate outside Japan and are taken as realistic representations by non-Japanese audiences.

Our Globe to Globe Hamlet tour travelled 193,000 miles before coming home for a final emotional performance in the Globe to mark the end, not just of this phenomenal worldwide journey, but the artistic handover from Dominic Dromgoole to Emma Rice. A memorable season of late Shakespeare plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and two outstanding Globe transfers in the West End ran concurrently with the last leg of the Globe to Globe Hamlet tour.     Third Year Major Special Subject RECEPTIONS OF GREEK TRAGEDY Dr Pantelis Michelakis and Dr Vanda Zajko Teaching Block 2: 2008-9 Unit Code CLAS32347: 40 Credits This unit will take as its focus six of the most influential ancient Greek plays and moments in their reception history in the 20th Century. It will explore the broad question of how the modern world has appropriated Greek drama to make sense of and interrogate its own identities. We will study a selection of theoretical, theatrical and cinematic texts which raise important issues about the possibility of cultural translation and the politicisation of the classical past. We will consider a number of the following questions: What is tragedy? To what extent is it a theoretical concept or a set of formal generic conventions? What is reception? How do reworkings of Greek tragedy in a variety of media contribute to ongoing debates about the changing images of what constitutes the classical? Does the study of texts in performance pose particular problems for reception history? The themes addressed will include the role of genre, Marxism, colonisation, the nature of modernity, psychoanalysis, feminism, memory and history, elitist and popular cultures.
