The Wiehltalsperre dam became renowned throughout thanks to a TV advertising campaign for beer by the Krombacher brewery. The two butterfly valves, each weighing approximately 3 tonnes, had to be lowered via the intake tower to a depth of almost 50 m.

New butterfly valves for a clean and reliable drinking water supply The Wiehltalsperre dam was put into service in 1973, following a lengthy construction period. 11 villages had to be moved to make room for the construction of the dam. In 2012, the bottom outlet valves of the bottom outlet pipes, each with a diameter of 1600 mm, were replaced.

The high technical requirements of the plant were fulfilled by ERHARD from Heiden- heim. Among other things, these included a high flow rate of 29,000 litres per second at a maximum flow velocity of 14.5 metres per second. Due to the confined space, the butterfly valves and the corresponding drop-weight drives were lowered into the dam separately and were assembled in-situ. The valves were matched to the existing foundation with the help of a tailor-made base construction. With the drop-weight drive and float trigger for flood protection, the ERHARD engineers were able to pro- vide a complete solution for the Wiehltalsperre. This also included and electrical con- Four new, high-quality ERHARD butterfly valves trol cabinet for the controls of the butterfly valves, with safety-relevant components will in future ensure clean and reliable drinking for emergency closure. water routing in the Wiehltalsperre dam.
