August & September at Tacoma and Kent Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, Wa., Thursday, June 6, 2019 – The Greater Puget Sound area needs more hockey officials, particularly at the younger levels (12U and 14U, boys and girls). Enrollment in our local hockey programs is growing faster than enrollment in local officiating programs. We must assure our local officiating programs keep pace with growth by helping them recruit young officials.

Now is your opportunity to become a hockey official. Kent Valley Hockey Association (KVHA) is encouraging young hockey players to consider becoming hockey officials this fall. Training is available locally for anyone interested and two officiating seminars are available locally in August and September. Here are the specifics:

Course name: Ref Level 1, Ref Level 2 and Ref Level 3 Date: August 24, 2019 9:00am – 1:30pm Location: Tacoma Twin Rinks, 2645 South 80th St., Tacoma Requirements: Level 1 Registration

Course name: Ref Level 1, Ref Level 2 and Ref Level 3 Date: September 21, 2019 8:30am – 2:30pm Location: Kent Valley Ice Centre, 6015 S 240th St., Kent Requirements: Level 1 Registration

Sean MacFarlane, From KVHA 18U Goalie to ECHL Referee By Lew Sellers In 2008/2009 Sean MacFarlane was a goalie on KVHA’s 18U Selects team. He was even a backup goalie for an injury-plagued Seattle Thunderbirds for a couple of games that season. When Sean ended his playing career and hung up his goalie pads at the end of the season, he returned home to Spokane, put on a hockey official’s jersey and began focusing on a career as a USA Hockey Official, a career he had begun at the age of 12. Sean participated in USA Hockey’s Official Development Program. There is more to Sean’s story than just that. The point is that Sean played the game and officiated the game beginning at the age of 12. Today, Sean MacFarlane is a Hockey Official with the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and his officiating career is expanding with each season, including games in the American Hockey League (AHL). Last April he worked the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) U18 men’s gold medal game in Sweden which was televised on the NHL Network. He just finished working the ECHL’s Kelly Cup finals. He is also in his fourth year of instructing at various national and high-end camps for officials. I’ve been a fan of Sean MacFarlane since I met him in 2008. I’ve followed his officiating career as it has taken him across the country, to several hockey leagues and to Europe for several International Ice Hockey Federation officiating assignments. I’m confident we’ll see him in the National Hockey League (NHL) one day soon. There is no reason why any one of our Kent Valley youth hockey players couldn’t follow in Sean’s footsteps, professional hockey also needs officials. It all starts with a USA Hockey officiating seminar and we’ve got one coming up in Tacoma in August and at Kent Valley Ice Centre in September. Sean MacFarlane and I encourage you to sign up today.
