THE RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT: THE AVENGING-WOMAN NARRATIVE IN POPULAR TELEVISION AND FILM by Lara Stache A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 2013 ABSTRACT THE RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT: THE AVENGING-WOMAN NARRATIVE IN POPULAR TELEVISION AND FILM by Lara Stache The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor John W. Jordan In this critical rhetorical analysis, I examine the contemporary avenging-woman narrative in popular television and film. As a rhetorical text, the avenging-woman narrative can be read as a representation of cultural constructions of female empowerment. In this project, I situate the contemporary avenging-woman narrative within the context of a contemporary third wave feminist culture, in order to articulate how the representations of female empowerment in the texts may be a negotiation of cultural tensions about feminism.

  • Erin Brockovich and Todays Mainstream Female Leads
International Journal of Science Commerce and Humanities Volume No 2 No 8 November 2014 14 YEARS ON: ERIN BROCKOVICH & TODAYS MAINSTREAM MEDIA FEMALE LEADS Aaron Rao Lecturer TMC Academy Singapore Abstract Some films deliver something beyond momentarily escapisms. In the case of the 2000 film Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Roberts, this corresponding influence relates to a modern approach of feminism, upholding a positive image of the average working woman. Feminists, past and present, have done their part in combatting media sexism. This intrinsic toughness that the average woman truly possesses is hardly glamorized in film and mainstream media, and at times, it is even frowned upon and associated with the role of a bitch or villain. Nevertheless, the character of Erin Brockovich in the 2000 film is an exception to such stigmatization. Erin Brockovich has paved the way for prominently displaying a variety of strong women all over mainstream media, especially in television. Keywords: Film, Media, Feminism, Erin Brockovich. INTRODUCTION Everyone watches films. There is no denying that films captivate our attention and allow us to momentarily escape reality and enter a fabricated yet ridiculously believable version of it. However, some films deliver something beyond those objectives – a degree of impact in society that will garner more followers of a certain way of thinking. In the case of the 2000 film Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Roberts, this corresponding influence relates to a modern approach of feminism, upholding a positive image of the average working woman. Feminism is described in the New Oxford American Dictionary as “the advocacy of women‟s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” The primary motive is to effect change in a pre-existing system that displays a bias in favor of men, and hence, this involves engaging with the government, public figures, prominent leaders, and even common citizens.

  • Actress Madeleine Stowe Opens up About Her Father's MS
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015 BY GINA SHAW Actress Madeleine Stowe Opens Up About Her Father's MS When Stowe's father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the 1960s, the family had few options and lile support. Today, Stowe is ooering both to other families. Madeleine Stowe can't recall a time when her father walked like other dads. "He always moved a little differently," says the star of the ABC drama Revenge, whose character was dramatically killed off in the series finale in May. (The actress's film credits include Last of the Mohicans, Blink, Stakeout, and 12 Monkeys.) "I remember when I was about three, hearing a discussion about him having double vision. By the time I was four it was worsening. His leg strength had also deteriorated, and there were hand controls on the car. He retired from his job as a civil engineer by the time I was six, and he was in a wheelchair full time in short order after that." COURTESY MADELEINE STOWE Today, Stowe's father, Robert, might be diagnosed with primary- or secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), the latter of which is defined as a gradual worsening of the disease after an initial relapse (flare- up) and remitting (recovery) phase. (To learn more about MS, read The Basics: Multiple Sclerosis.) But back in the 1960s, MS was still poorly understood, with few diagnostic tests and no disease-modifying treatments. "We weren't very good at diagnosing people back then, and magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] scans didn't come into use until about 1982," says Barbara Giesser, MD, clinical director of the University of California, Los Angeles MS Program at the David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine, a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN), a member of the Neurology Now editorial advisory board, and co-author of the newest title in the AAN's Neurology Now Books series, Navigating Life with Multiple Sclerosis.
