WELCOME

Welcome to the Autumn/Winter Season at Salisbury Playhouse and Salisbury Arts Centre.

At Salisbury Playhouse we are excited to be transforming the Main House for two special productions this Autumn. Alan Ayckbourn’s brilliant comedy Relatively Speaking and Hugh Whitemore’s compelling drama Breaking the Code will be produced with seating on all sides of the stage, bringing audiences closer than ever to the action and creating a special atmosphere in the theatre.

Alongside these two Wiltshire Creative productions, we are thrilled to be producing the world premiere of Barney Norris’s new play – a retelling of Lorca’s Blood Wedding, set in a Wiltshire Village.

At Salisbury Arts Centre, there is a lively mix of dance, comedy, music and film, as well as live screenings from NT Live and New York’s Met Opera and a fascinating programme of visual arts.

And, of course, there is plenty of entertainment over the Christmas period – from the family pantomime Robin Hood, a new musical adaptation of The Tailor of Gloucester and Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales at the Playhouse, to a festive murder mystery, stand-up comedy and Christmas music at the Arts Centre.

Finally, why not get creative yourself? Take a look at the wide range of workshops our Take Part team runs – from pottery and sculpture to dance, circus skills and even stand-up comedy – and give something a try.

Thank you to all our audiences and visitors who continue to support our work as Wiltshire Creative. We hope you find lots to entertain and inspire this season.

A Wiltshire Creative Production RELATIVELY SPEAKING By Alan Ayckbourn

Greg and Ginny are living together. Ginny is keen to marry Greg, but with unfamiliar slippers under the bed and a delivery of flowers and chocolates, Greg is becoming suspicious that he is not the only man in her life. When Ginny says she is visiting her parents, a dizzying series of misunderstandings unravel into chaotic comedy in this – Ayckbourn’s first big West End hit.

“Ayckbourn is an absolute master of the one-liner and a brilliant observer of human nature.” Valley News on the 2014 Salisbury Playhouse Production of Bedroom Farce

A Wiltshire Creative Production BREAKING THE CODE By Hugh Whitemore Based on Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges

At the height of the Second World War, eccentric genius Alan Turing was breaking the complex German code, Enigma, at Bletchley Park. Since his work was classified top secret for years after the war, no one knew how much was owed to him when he was later put on trial and publicly humiliated by the revelation of his sexuality. Hugh Whitemore’s compelling play intertwines an account of Turing’s most heroic hour with that of his betrayal by the nation he had helped in its darkest hour. Turing’s story went on to be told in the 2014 Oscar- winning film The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

MAME

Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death! That’s the motto of Mame Dennis, one of ’s all-time greatest heroines, in this brassy, hilarious and touching adaptation of Patrick Dennis’s bestseller, Auntie Mame, starring critically acclaimed and two- time Olivier Award-winner Tracie Bennett as Mame (End of the Rainbow, Hairspray, Blood Brothers, Coronation, Scott & Bailey) and film, TV and theatre favourite Harriet Thorpe as Vera (, The Brittas Empire, new BBC comedy Mister Winner, , Mamma Mia! - National Theatre & West End). Set in New York City and spanning the Great Depression and World War II, Mame Dennis and her intellectual and arty clique are disrupted when her deceased brother’s 10-year-old son Patrick is entrusted into her care. Rather than bow to convention, Mame tries her hand at a number of jobs with comically, disastrous results but perseveres with good humour and an irrepressible sense of style. Jerry Herman’s celebrated musicals includes the rousing title number, plus “Open a New Window,” “If He Walked into My Life,” “We Need a Little Christmas,” “Bosom Buddies” and “That’s How Young I Feel.” With spirit, humour, class and wit, Mame is sure to thrill audiences for generations to come. Living Spit’s Odyssey Friday 25 October at 8pm and Saturday 26 October at 2.30pm & 8pm Salisbury Arts Centre

Captivating singer Kate Dimbleby joins Bristol’s favourite comedy theatre troupe Living Spit to reimagine Homer’s classic work. The Odyssey, one of the supreme works of western literature, tells of Odysseus’ 10-year journey home to Ithaca from the Trojan War, overcoming some of Greek mythology’s greatest monsters, misfortunes and temptations. While all Greece presumed him dead, Penelope, his faithful wife, fended off 100 drunken suitors who besieged their home. The story’s scope and beauty have entranced mankind for nearly three thousand years.

Now Kate Dimbleby, the internationally renowned, stupefyingly talented singer and raconteur, joins Living Spit, a pair of scruffy, puerile, knockabout chancers from a small seaside town just south of Bristol, to create a brand new and highly original retelling of this story of redemption, isolation and a desperate yearning for love. Expect great music and top-notch comedy married together with playful panache, pathos and painful puns a-plenty! Let’s just hope they get on…

“This ribald reworking is a beguiling rib-tickler... the sense of mischief and sheer silliness are difficult to resist" The Times on Living Spit’s Frankenstein “Stunning vocal virtuosity… This is an artist absolutely at the top of her game” BBC Radio 6 Music on Kate Dimbleby
