Philip Nitschke Returns to Exit

Following an extraordinarily strong show of support from Exit Members, Dr Philip Nitschke has made the momentous decision to resign as a doctor, in favour of continuing to run , the non profit organization he founded in 1997.

The decision was made after personal contemplation of the 26 restrictions that were placed by the Medical Board of upon his registration. These restrictions included not talking to anyone, anywhere in

the world, about Voluntary / and removing his name as co-author from The Peaceful Pill eHandbook.

The restrictions were politically driven and, as such, were considered by Exit Members to be untenable.

At a press conference in Darwin on 27 November, Dr Nitschke burnt his medical registration card.

Of the act he said it felt cathartic to be rid of a profession that is stuck in the dark ages; unable to come to grips with the huge support within the community for the right to determine the time and manner of one's passing.

The Medical Board of Australia shows by these actions how little insight this body has into the changing social needs of modern society.

The right of an adult to a peaceful death is a fundamental right. This right is not dependent on degrees of sickness, or medical expertise, or any permission or authority that that the medical profession can give.

Dr Nitschke's statement of resignation is available, along with media reports by the ABC, the Sydney Morning Herald and others including . Philip would like to sincerely thank all members who participated in the online attitudinal survey. Your support was gratifying and appreciated.

Full survey results.

The outcome of this member support is that Philip will now return to his work at Exit.

He will particularly focus upon the goal of ensuring that all adults over of 70 have access to a reliable Peaceful Pill.

Philip's first task is to hold a series of 8 Exit Workshops in all Australian Capital cities (except Canberra) concluding in on 15 December 2015. Details below.
