The State, Democracy and Social Movements
The Dynamics of Conflict and Peace in Contemporary South Asia This book engages with the concept, true value, and function of democracy in South Asia against the background of real social conditions for the promotion of peaceful development in the region. In the book, the issue of peaceful social development is defined as the con- ditions under which the maintenance of social order and social development is achieved – not by violent compulsion but through the negotiation of intentions or interests among members of society. The book assesses the issue of peaceful social development and demonstrates that the maintenance of such conditions for long periods is a necessary requirement for the political, economic, and cultural development of a society and state. Chapters argue that, through the post-colo- nial historical trajectory of South Asia, it has become commonly understood that democracy is the better, if not the best, political system and value for that purpose. Additionally, the book claims that, while democratization and the deepening of democracy have been broadly discussed in the region, the peace that democracy is supposed to promote has been in serious danger, especially in the 21st century. A timely survey and re-evaluation of democracy and peaceful development in South Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of South Asian Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian Politics and Security. Minoru Mio is a professor and the director of the Department of Globalization and Humanities at the National Museum of Ethnology, Japan. He is one of the series editors of the Routledge New Horizons in South Asian Studies and has co-edited Cities in South Asia (with Crispin Bates, 2015), Human and International Security in India (with Crispin Bates and Akio Tanabe, 2015) and Rethinking Social Exclusion in India (with Abhijit Dasgupta, 2017), also pub- lished by Routledge. -

Suraj Punj Journal For Multidisciplinary Research ISSN NO: 2394-2886 God Hanuman, the Dalits and the Tribals Phd Scholar, TATA Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai Abstract God Hanuman is a Hindu God who has sacred meaning. This paper documents how the sacred meaning of Hanuman is challenged to give multiple social, political and economic meanings during an election campaign in India. Such meanings are given for utility. Such practice, the paper argues, is in tune with the tenor of our secularized and post-truth era. Keywords: God, Hanuman, Yogi Adityanath, Symbol, Sacred Introduction Gods like Hanuman are symbols in their own right which have a meaning, like sacredness. Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Chief Priest of the Gorakhnath Math Yogi. Adityanath recently said that Hanuman was a Dalit, a member of the ‘lower caste’. A lot of other important commentators also made references to Hanuman’s caste in response to Yogi’s comments. This paper argues that Yogi’s comment and the ensuing commentary indicates that the meaning of Hanuman’s symbol is changing from religious to political, social and economic. This paper attempts a semiotic analysis of this phenomenon. Herein, Hanuman is a signifier which has a signified (meaning, including sacredness). The signifier is acquiring political, social, economic signified. Such change in the meaning of the sacred symbol of Hanuman is a ‘rupture’ in the meaning of symbol, which is not happening just by accident. Such political, social, economic meanings are given according to the utility of the meaning to the person who is giving meanings to a particular symbol. -

2011 40th Annual Conference on South Asia Paper Abstracts Center for South Asia University of Wisconsin - Madison Aaftaab, Naheed Claiming Middle Class: Globalization, IT, and exclusionary practices in Hyderabad In this paper, I propose that middle class identity in the IT sector can be read as part of an “identity politics” that claim certain rights and benefits from governmental bodies both at the national and international levels. India’s economic growth since the 1991 liberalization has been attended by the growth of the middle classes through an increase in employment opportunities, such as those in the IT sector. The claims to middle class status are couched in narratives of professional affiliations that shape culturally significant components of middle class identities. The narratives rely on the ability of IT professionals to reconcile the political identities of nationalism while simultaneously belonging to a global work force. IT workers and the industry at large are symbols of India’s entry into the global scene, which, in turn, further reinforces the patriotic and nationalist rhetoric of “Indianness.” This global/national identity, however, exists through exclusionary practices that are evident in the IT sector despite the management’s assertions that the industry’s success is dependent on “merit based” employment practices. Yogi Adityanath’s Background and Rise to Power 1 Yogi Adityanath’s Background and Rise to Power Véronique Bouillier 1 Styled “the Hindu Priest” or “the Hindu Monk,” even “the Fanatic Hindu Monk” by the Press, Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is a Yogi, specifically a member of the Shaiva sect of the Nath Yogis.1 The Nath Yogis are characterized by the huge earrings that they wear in the thick of the ear, the cartilage being split in the middle, hence their popular name of Kanphata Yogis or Yogis with split ears. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I want to focus on some aspects of the political process in India that have an impact on the treatment of religious minorities. Much of the discussion on multicultural jurisdictions deals with differ- entiated citizenship rights that allow religious groups to maintain their normative universe. This literature shows the tensions surrounding individual and group rights. I want to approach the question of religious freedom from a rather different angle. I want to first focus on the protection of bare life in the face of religious violence and then examine the issue of conversion from one religion to another. The issues of human security and conversion are linked in India, since Hindu nationalists see Muslims as forcibly con- verted Hindus who should be reconverted. To highlight the importance of majoritarian nationalism rather than political systems in the treatment of religious minorities, I offer a brief comparison with China. Keywords: minority; nationalism; Hindus; Muslims; violence 1. Introduction The sovereign nation-state has to be the guarantor of religious freedom in the modern period. Multilateral treaties and international organizations may put pressure on nation-states and, in extreme cases, may even intervene, but the nation-state remains the ultimate arbiter of reli- gious freedom. In many societies, the state faces the difficulty that it has to accommodate dif- ferent religious groups, but at the same time has to unify the people into a nation.
