Refutation of Composite Nationalism Mawlana Zafar Ahmad al-‘Uthmani Translator‟s note: At the end of the Book of Campaigns (Kitab al-Siyar) from I„la al-Sunan, Mawlana Zafar Ahmad al-„Uthmani (1310-1394 H/1892-1974 CE) writes: “Its compilation was [done] under the supervision of the prodigy of this age, the knower of Allah, the sage of the Muhammadan nation, the reviver of the Islamic religion, my master, Shaykh Mawlana Muhammad Ashraf „Ali al-Thanawi (1280- 1362 H/1863-1943 CE), Allah extend his stay amongst us and give us the good fortune of his sacred breaths for a long time. All praise to Allah by Whose glory and magnificence, good deeds are accomplished. Our final call is that all praise belongs to Allah Lord of the Worlds.” After this comes a section under the title, “An Addendum to the Book of Campaigns: Refutation of Composite Nationalism,” in which he addresses a particular political ideology popular at that time in India which has correlations with modernist tendencies amongst many Muslims today. I therefore, felt, it was fitting to translate this 25-page refutation. The date given at the end of the addendum for the completion of this refutation is Dhu al-Qa„dah 1357 H (January 1939 CE). www.ijcrt.org © 2020 IJCRT | Volume 8, Issue 10 October 2020 | ISSN: 2320-2882 COMMUNITY, NATION AND POLITICS IN COLONIAL BIHAR (1920-47) Md Masoom Alam, PhD, JNU Abstract The paper is an attempt to explore, primarily, the nationalist Muslims and their activities in Bihar, since 1937 till 1947. The work, by and large, will discuss the Muslim personalities and institutions which were essentially against the Muslim League and its ideology. This paper will be elaborating many issues related to the Muslims of Bihar during 1920s, 1930s and 1940s such as the Muslim organizations’ and personalities’ fight for the nation and against the League, their contribution in bridging the gulf between Hindus and Muslims and bringing communal harmony in Bihar and others. Moreover, apart from this, the paper will be focusing upon the three core issues of the era, the 1946 elections, the growth of communalism and the exodus of the Bihari Muslims to Dhaka following the elections. The paper seems quite interesting in terms of exploring some of the less or underexplored themes and sub-themes on colonial Bihar and will certainly be a great contribution to the academia. Therefore, surely, it will get its due attention as other provinces of colonial India such as U. P., Bengal, and Punjab. Introduction Most of the writings on India’s partition are mainly focused on the three provinces of British India namely Punjab, Bengal and U. P. Based on these provinces, the writings on the idea of partition and separatism has been generalized with the misperception that partition was essentially a Muslim affair rather a Muslim League affair. -

The attempts by the British to inculcate modernism in Indian societies was taken up by the Muslims as a political and cultural challenge. Unlike the Muslim ideologues such as Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817-18), who launched Aligarh Movement adopting progressive and loyalist approach, the exponent Deoband Movement showed militant resistance towards British imperialism and by sticking to their religious dogmas attempted to reform the society along with orthodox lines. Yet, they afterwards modernized their educational institutions which appeared to be one of the dominant set of Islam and made seminary second largest religious educational institution in the Muslim World. -
The State, Democracy and Social Movements
The Dynamics of Conflict and Peace in Contemporary South Asia This book engages with the concept, true value, and function of democracy in South Asia against the background of real social conditions for the promotion of peaceful development in the region. In the book, the issue of peaceful social development is defined as the con- ditions under which the maintenance of social order and social development is achieved – not by violent compulsion but through the negotiation of intentions or interests among members of society. The book assesses the issue of peaceful social development and demonstrates that the maintenance of such conditions for long periods is a necessary requirement for the political, economic, and cultural development of a society and state. Chapters argue that, through the post-colo- nial historical trajectory of South Asia, it has become commonly understood that democracy is the better, if not the best, political system and value for that purpose. Additionally, the book claims that, while democratization and the deepening of democracy have been broadly discussed in the region, the peace that democracy is supposed to promote has been in serious danger, especially in the 21st century. A timely survey and re-evaluation of democracy and peaceful development in South Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of South Asian Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian Politics and Security. Minoru Mio is a professor and the director of the Department of Globalization and Humanities at the National Museum of Ethnology, Japan. Muhammad Iqbal Chawala PICTURE OF MUSLIM POLITICS IN INDIA BEFORE WAVELL’S VICEROYALTY The Hindu-Muslim conflict in India had entered its final phase in the 1940’s. The Muslim League, on the basis of the Two-Nation Theory, had been demanding a separate homeland for the Muslims of India. The movement for Pakistan was getting into full steam at the time of Wavell’s arrival to India in October 1943 although it was opposed by an influential section of the Muslims. This paper examines the Muslim politics in India and also highlights the background of their demand for a separate homeland. It analyzes the nature, programme and leadership of the leading Muslim political parties in India. It also highlights their aims and objectives for gaining an understanding of their future behaviour. Additionally, it discusses the origin and evolution of the British policy in India, with special reference to the Muslim problem. Moreover, it tries to understand whether Wavell’s experiences in India, first as a soldier and then as the Commander-in-Chief, proved helpful to him in understanding the mood of the Muslim political scene in India. British Policy in India Wavell was appointed as the Viceroy of India upon the retirement of Lord Linlithgow in October 1943. He was no stranger to India having served here on two previous occasions. His first-ever posting in India was at Ambala in 1903 and his unit moved to the NWFP in 1904 as fears mounted of a war with 75 76 [J.R.S.P., Vol. 45, No. 1, 2008] Russia.1 His stay in the Frontier province left deep and lasting impressions on him. -

The Ideals of Islam in Maulana Abul Kalam Azad‟s Thoughts 63 The Ideals of Islam in Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s Thoughts and Political Practices: An Appraisal Dr. Misbah Umar Fozia Umar ** ABSTRACT The article attempts to explore and describe the ideals of Islam as perceived and practised by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (1888-1958) at various stages of his life. Starting from religious conservatism received from his family, Maulana Azad moved towards rationalism at first and then to Pan-Islamism before finally committing to humanism. In this process of intellectual progression, his perception of Islam and its ideals changed as his social and political interactions changed over time. These changing contours of Maulana Azad‟s thoughts found manifestation in the political practices he carried out from various platforms. Islam served as a great source of legitimation in his political practices. Inspiration for Islamic revivalism drew him into political activities aimed at serving the Muslim cause and fighting British imperialism. Maulana Azad‟s sentiments and aspirations for Islam and Muslims echoed loudly during the Khilafat Movement which brought him closer to communal harmony and also resulted in his lasting association with the Indian National Congress. Whatever the platform he utilised, for Maulana Azad Muslim uplift remained a constant and prime concern in politics which he, ultimately, came to believe could be achieved by Hindu-Muslim unity as a single force against the British colonial power. The photograph no. 70 is the picture of the ceiling of one of the dome of the structure. It is a construction of bricks with thick lime plaster. There is a picture of lotus petals in the center, which was probably made in colors and had a iron chain hanging out from center. The learned counsel for the plaintiff, Sri Vireshwar Dwivedi drew the attention of the witness towards the colored photographs contained in the album prepared by U.P. Archaeological Organization. On looking at it, the witness stated that the photograph no. 44 is a slab of red stone with numeral ‘1’ and Janmbhumi written over it in Hindi. Janmbhumi is also written below it in English. After looking at the photograph nos. 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54 the witness stated that these photographs are of those two black stone pillars, which are found on both side of the gate after entering the structure. The photograph no. 55 is the picture of boundary wall of that structure. The photograph nos. 62, 63, 64, 65 are also pictures of boundary wall of that very structure. KASHMIRIYAT couv Janv 09:Layout 1 8/04/09 11:58 Page 1 Madanjeet Singh The two unique and memorable events that South Asia Foundation (SAF) organized in Srinagar to commemorate the Bhakti-Sufi-Rishi culture of Kashmiriyat, featured a jointly held India/Pakistan music concert Junoon and the Singhs, and an unprecedented exhibition of paintings by South Asian women artists. Madanjeet Singh narrates an account of these events, providing insights into age-old links between the music and art of South Asia and the pluralist culture and legacy of Kashmiriyat. KASHMIRIYAT Madanjeet Singh was born on 16 April 1924 in Lahore, present-day Pakistan. A well-known painter and a distinguished photographer, he is an internationally known author of several books on art and other subjects, closely interwoven with UNESCO’s programmes, principles and ideals. During Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘Quit India’ movement in 1942 against colonial rule, Madanjeet Singh was imprisoned. He later migrated to newly partitioned India in 1947 and worked in a refugee camp. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1953 and served as Ambassador of India in Asia, South America, Africa and Europe before joining UNESCO in1982, based in Paris. South Asia Foundation At the inaugural ceremony of the Institute of Kashmir Studies on 26 May 2008, Madanjeet Singh presented President Pratibha In 1995, in recognition of his lifelong devotion to the cause of Patil with a copy of his book, This My People, to which Prime communal harmony and peace, the UNESCO Executive Board Minister Jawaharlal Nehru handwrote a preface, shortly after created the biennial ‘UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the India’s Partition in 1947. -

Misbah Umar* Azad’s Scheme of Composite Nationalism: Content and Logic ABSTRACT The paper evaluates the concept of composite nationalism with special reference to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, an intrepid politician and eloquent intellectual. Azad’s scheme of composite nationalism was against the Muslim League’s popular demand of separate homeland for Muslims. The scheme of composite nationalism by Azad incorporated the themes of anti-imperialism, pan-Islamism and anti- communalism. These aspects of composite nationalism overlap and intertwine each other in terms of inception, development and manifestation. Keywords: Muslim revivalism, Hindu-Muslim unity, Composite nationalism, separatism, Abul Kalam Azad, Al-Hilal, Al-Balagh, Pan Islamism and Anti Colonialism Introduction Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (1888-1958) was a keen intellectual, articulate scholar and an intrepid politician who attained significance in the religious, political and intellectual endeavours. He rejected Muslim separatism on the basis of religion and instead favoured composite Indian nationalism in the Indian struggle for independence. Scheme of Composite Nationalism Azad stood firm against the British oppression upon Indians and laid a great stress on Hindu-Muslim unity for expulsion of British from India. He believed in composite nationalism and advocated that it was advantageous for the Muslims of India. The scheme of composite nationalism by Azad incorporated the themes of anti-imperialism, pan-Islamism and anti-communalism. -

2011 40th Annual Conference on South Asia Paper Abstracts Center for South Asia University of Wisconsin - Madison Aaftaab, Naheed Claiming Middle Class: Globalization, IT, and exclusionary practices in Hyderabad In this paper, I propose that middle class identity in the IT sector can be read as part of an “identity politics” that claim certain rights and benefits from governmental bodies both at the national and international levels. India’s economic growth since the 1991 liberalization has been attended by the growth of the middle classes through an increase in employment opportunities, such as those in the IT sector. The claims to middle class status are couched in narratives of professional affiliations that shape culturally significant components of middle class identities. The narratives rely on the ability of IT professionals to reconcile the political identities of nationalism while simultaneously belonging to a global work force. IT workers and the industry at large are symbols of India’s entry into the global scene, which, in turn, further reinforces the patriotic and nationalist rhetoric of “Indianness.” This global/national identity, however, exists through exclusionary practices that are evident in the IT sector despite the management’s assertions that the industry’s success is dependent on “merit based” employment practices.
