I am grateful to my colleagues at the VAA Textile Department for their understanding and support during this academic year. 9 10 KŪRYBINĖ DALIS KILIMAS: TARP MENO IR DIZAINO OBJEKTO Katalogas 11 Meno projektą Kilimas: tarp meno ir dizaino objekto sudaro trys dalys, sukurtos ieškant asmeninės kūrybos sąsajų su islamo šalių kilimų kūrimo intencijomis ir vaidmenimis tautos, šeimos ar atskiro žmogaus gyvenime. Kilime Eccentric (liet. Ekscentriškas) susipynė, atrodytų, viskas – 2013 metų taikomosios tekstilės tendencijos, sunkiausiai išgaunama, dažant natūraliais dažais, turkio spalva, medalionas, su visais jam priskiriamais simboliais, ikat audiniai, aproprijuotos Jano Katho kilimų rožės, dizainerio perimtos iš Karabacho bei besarabų kilimų, mano šešiametės dukros languotame sąsiuvinyje piešiami „kilimai“ bei mano pačios kūrybą identifikuojantis kilimų raštas – sodrios, „skanios“ spanguolės. Legenda apie VI a. Sasanidų dinastijos šachui Chosrau I sukurtą Baharestan kilimą inspiravo pradėti kurti kilimus, gebančius sužadinti jausmus ir emocijas, surasti, kas kuria nematerialią funkcionalaus tekstilės objekto vertę. Pirmasis kolekcijos Malonumas kilimas – Šokoladas (angl. Chocolate). Abstraktaus piešinio, turtingos paviršiaus faktūros, skirtingų tekstilinių pluoštų ir jausmingų spalvinių santykių jungtis turi tikslą per regą ir lytėjimą sužadinti skonį bei uoslę. Impulsyvūs, neatsikartojantys spalviniai deriniai, kiekviena audimo eile sukuria vis kitą emocinį bei estetinį įspūdį. Kilimo esmė atsiskleidžia per jo kasdienę kontempliaciją, kiekvieną dieną akiai užkliūvant už vis naujos detalės, o vaizdinių abstraktumas leidžia užsimiršti, ilsėtis, svajoti. Tolimesniame Malonumo kolekcijos etape plėtoti kitų skonių ir kvapų inspiruotų paviršių sprendimai. Interpretacijų inspiracijoms pasirinkta: ledai su braškėmis, kava, cinamonas, slyvos ir biskvitiniai sausainiai. Kadangi visa kolekcija skirta sužadinti emocijas, medituoti, ilsėtis, buvo audžiama be išankstinio projekto, lygiai taip pat improvizuojant ir laisvai atsiduodant emociniams potyriams, keliamiems skonių ir kvapų, eilė po eilės kuriant galutinį rezultatą. Visi kolekcijos kilimai projektuojami kaip „gurmaniški“, suprantami ir pajaučiami galbūt daugiausia tekstilės „gurmanų“. Kilimų kolekcijoje Rojaus sodai sujungiamos beveik visos tiriamajame darbe analizuotos Rytų kilimų simbolinės prasmės. Kuriama tam tikro, religiniu bei kultūriniu aspektu universalaus Rojaus sodo, kuriame atsiskleidžia tikėjimo, vilties, svajonių, estetinio grožio intencijos, vizija. Šiame kūrinyje sujungiamos į vieną visumą ir stebuklingo pažadėto sodo, ir „skraidančio kilimo“, mediatoriaus tarp dviejų pasaulių, 12 idėja. Kilimų tikslas – sukurti emocinės zonos atmosferą,

    Nigel Lendon, A tournament of shadows: Alighiero Boetti, the myth of influence, and a contemporary orientalism NIGEL LENDON A tournament of shadows: Alighiero Boetti, the myth of influence, and a contemporary orientalism ABSTRACT This paper examines the evolution of the historical and theoretical literature that has developed about the work of the avant-garde Italian artist Alighiero Boetti produced in Afghanistan from 1971 until 1994. Characterised by a set of interrelated cultural and historical fictions, I propose that this collective narrative has evolved to constitute a contemporary orientalist mythology. This is particularly evident in the literature following his death in 1994, and most recently in anticipation of his retrospective exhibitions in the Museo Reina Sofia, Tate Modern, and the Museum of Modern Art in 2011–12. Prior to his death, the literature on Boetti primarily took the form of catalogue essays, journal articles and biographies. These drew heavily on a small number of interviews conducted with the artist, plus accounts and memoirs given by his wives, partners, and curatorial collaborators. Since his death, the literature has further proliferated, and today a greater emphasis is placed on a growing number of secondary authorities. Recent monographs, catalogue essays, and auction house texts draw heavily on the anecdotal accounts of his agents and facilitators, as well as his employees and archivists. In exploring what I describe as the mythologies informing the contemporary reception of his work, I examine the claims of his influence over the distinctive indigenous genre of Afghan narrative carpets which were produced both within Afghanistan as well as by diasporic Afghans in Iran and Pakistan in the years following the 1979 Soviet invasion until the present.

Traditionally, the pile woven carpets made by Afghan tribal groups included symbols more often associated with life and faith than death and war. However, beginning with the Soviet Invasion of 1979, weavers have incorporated imagery that is at once disturbing and defiant. The events surrounding the period of Taliban rule and American Occupation have, similarly, provided fodder for woven imaginations. This exhibition, co-curated by Michele Hardy and Robert Fyke, features carpets from a number of private collections as well as the Jean and Marie Erikson Collection, all brought together for the first time in Canada. The earliest rugs to be called "war rugs" appeared following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. According to the often speculative literature on the subject, war carpets are thought to have originated near Herat in northwest Afghanistan. Likely they were woven by members of tribal groups with long traditions of carpet weaving. Many war rugs are attributed to the Baluch, for example, an ethnically diverse nomadic group who occupy a vast region on either side of the Afghan-Iran border.

    The Modern Art of Central Asia The Modern Art of Central Asia August 21 - October 16, Organized and curated by Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins, Ph.D. PREFACE Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia is an important international exhibition that brings to the United States, for the first time, one of the most distinct collections of Afghan war rugs in the world. The mostly women artists who wove the rugs abandoned their traditional nonfigurative styles to produce rich pictorial images that recount a broader story. In knotted rugs with maps, portraits of kings, khans, and military leaders, and in rugs with weapons, the weavers revolutionized an ancient craft. Turkmen Rugs Geography West Turkestan is an area of some 700,000 square kilometres with the Caspian Sea to the west, the Mangyshlak Peninsula to the northeast and the Kapet-Dagh Mountains and the outskirts of the Hindukush forming a semicircle to the south. West of what since 1924 has been the border of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Turkmenistan are Afghanistan and the Iranian province of Khorassan. At the eastern side is the huge Chinese province of Xinjiang (Sinkiang). Usually referred to in the context of weaving literature as East Turkestan. Thus viewed in simple geographic terms, it is easier to understand the nature of this Eurasian basin, part of the ancient world's dry belt. To the western side of the region is the Karakum desert and to the east, between the Amu- Darya and Syr-Darya rivers, is the Kyzylkum desert. To the south, that there was earlier the Soviet Socialist Republic of Uzbekistan, now this independent state, are the important trading centres of Bukhara and Samarkand. The latter having been a major post along the ancient Silk Road, which ran from China through East Turkestan and on westwards, via Tashkent in Uzbekistan, Mary (Merv) in Turkmenistan and Khorasan. Many different ethnic groups have occupied this region for millennia and among those associated with weaving, in addition to the Turkmen's themselves, are the Uzbeks, Karakalpaks and Kirgiz. Historical Research Serious research into the weaving culture of the Turkmen's must, of course, encompass more than aesthetic appreciation.

It was constructed in the Qajar Dynasty in 1876 by Lord Mirza Hasan Ali Nasir al Mulk. The mosque is known for its extensive use in colored glass in its façade. The construction of the mosque uses other traditional structural elements as well such as “panj kasehi” (five concaves). These days, the mosque is more of a tourist attraction than a place for prayer. Like all mosques in Iran, you must remove your shoes before entering and the floor is lined with Persian rugs from wall to wall. Afghan Wars, Oriental Carpets, and Globalization Abstract The afghan war rugs on exhibit at the Penn Museum from April 30 to July 31, 2011, raise a number of interesting questions—about carpets, Afghanistan, and the way the world as a whole is changing. These rugs, which come in a variety of sizes and qualities, derive from a tradition of oriental carpet-weaving that began to attract the attention of Western rug collectors in the late 19th century. Unlike the classic museum pieces that were produced on vertical looms in the cities of western Asia for use in palaces and grand houses, war rugs came from horizontal looms in small tribal communities of Turkmen and Baloch in the areas of central Asia on either side of the northern border of Afghanistan—tribal communities that were incorporated into the Russian Empire in the 19th century. This creates the basic structure of the rug, to which the pile yarns may be added with hand knotting or mechanical insertion. Foundation yarns used in rugs are: wool, silk, cotton, jute, polyester and polypropylene. Foundation yarns include: Warp – cotton, wool, silk, linen, polyester, slit-film polypropylene.
