But during the game, it should be just positive things. A lot of people don’t know this, but on the larg- er fields, the kids can’t hear the parents anyway. All they hear most of the time is noise and wind. Also, their focus is on the game and most kids are not good at multi-tasking anyway, so most things from the sideline are not heard. When I coached the club team, I told all of my players to not pay attention to what their parents told them during the game. They needed to only hear their coach’s voice giving direction during the game, not their parents. But they know support from being negative. There is a true fact of nature about offering encouragement. Have you seen a flock of geese flying? Of course you have. Have you noticed that the geese are always in a V formation with the lead goose bearing the brunt of the wind resistance? The geese are always honking. Have you noticed that? They are honking encouragement to the lead goose. It is a fact! They are doing that because the lead goose is working the hardest and needs the encouragement to keep working that hard. It would reduce the possibili- ty of fan interaction and possible disputes that can escalate. But, in soccer all the fans are one side of the field. Let’s say that a fan yelled at the referee that a player made a dirty play and that should be called and he should be carded. That player was your son and you confront him. As the beer commercial says: Here we go! Parents, do NOT talk about other players. Once again, be positive to your own player. Only that. It’s just not worth it. If you feel that a referee is missing things, call or send an email note to the league official so that they can review that referee’s work and get it improved. The camp was held at the University of North Texas and attracted over 300 cheerleaders from the surrounding states. Founded in 1948 by L.R. Herkimer, NCA has been conducting camps for over 60 years and holds events annually for 150,000 cheerleaders and dancers around the world. The National Cheerleaders Association selects award winners at each of the 1,000 camps it administers around the world each summer. As part of the four-day curriculum, the National Cheerleaders Association rewards performance ribbons based on the following criteria: formations, placement, sharpness, timing/rhythm, voice, expression/projection, execution of skills, crowd appeal, and over- all effect. The DHS Freshman Cheerleaders received five Superior ribbons and one Excellent ribbon for game day cheer and chant evaluation. The Durant Freshman Cheerleaders also received two significant awards the last day of camp: Most Improved and Spirit Stick Winner Award. The Most Improved Award is awarded to the team that has consistently improved throughout the entire week. The Spirit Stick Winner Award is presented to the squad showing the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm throughout the entire week at camp. The Durant Freshman Cheerleaders also had 3 All-American Nominees: Hailee Hampton, Katie McCarley, and Brooke Podany. All-American Nominees are outstanding individuals who display strength in one of the following categories: motions, jumps, stunts, tumbling, dance or leadership. These individuals are eligible to per- form at various NCA Special Events and were selected among over 300 cheerleaders from the surrounding states.
