To do so, I adhere largely to a literary studies model, focussing primarily upon eddic and skaldic poetry and the consistent underlying motifs expressed in conjunction with descriptions of this seemingly ritualistic act. Norse Influences on Tolkien’s Elves and Dwarves1 Peter Wilkin Introduction The ‘mythology’ of J R R Tolkien, best known through his seminal work The Lord of the Rings [1954-5], has unquestionably had a more profound influence on the fantasy genre than any author before or since. To give a brief overview, Tolkien began what would come to be known loosely as the 'Silmarillion' in 1917 and continued developing his mythology intermittently right up until his death in 1973. In 1937 he published The Hobbit in which the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, undertakes an adventure with a group of dwarves to recover a hoard of stolen treasure guarded by a dragon. Several years later at the insistence of his publishers, Tolkien began work on The Lord of the Rings which, after some ten years of interrupted writing, was released in three volumes (The Fellowship of the Ring [1954], The Two Towers [1954] and The Return of the King 1955]). The Lord of the Rings recounts Frodo Baggins' perilous journey to destroy the Ring of Power created by Sauron, the Dark Lord. Throughout this period Tolkien was also working on his broader mythology, which was published posthumously as The Silmarillion in 1977. Edited by his son Christopher Tolkien, and Canadian fantasy writer Guy Gavriel Kay, The Silmarillion relates the creation of the world, and the history of the Silmarilli, three jewels composed of the lights of Valinor that are stolen by Morgoth, the first dark lord.

That these clans constituted one race was evident to the Romans, for they all had a striking similarity in type of body; moreover, a closer acquaintance revealed that their numerous dialects were all variations of the same parent language, and finally, they resembled each other in customs, traditions, and religion. The characteristic features of the physical type of the Germans were light hair, blue eyes, light complexion, and tallness of stature as compared with the Romans.

    The Poetic Edda The Poetic Edda Northvegr Edition Edda Sæmundar Hinns Froða The Edda Of Sæmund The Learned Translated From the Old Icelandic By Benjamin Thorpe The Northvegr Foundation Press • Lapeer, Michigan iv This Northvegr Edition is an unabridged and unaltered republication of a translation that was pub- lished in two separate editions. The first edition is an edition published by the Norroena Society in 1907, as The Elder Edda of Saemond Sigfusson, and the Younger Edda of Snorre Sturleson. This edition also included a translation of the Prose Edda, translated by I. A. Blackwell, which is not included in the present edition. We no longer have access to the text of the second edition, which is most likely from Thorpe’s 1866 publication, Edda Sæmundar hinns Frôða. The texts from the two editions are virtually the same except for a few key points. The 1907 edition includes footnotes (which have been reproduced for the Northvegr Edition). The 1866 edition includes three lays that did not appear in the 1907 edition: Hrafnagaldr Odins, Gunnars Slagr and Gröttasóngr. All three are included in this edition.
