Features Filmmakers WELCOME In a year fraught with changes you might not want to be reminded about, we bring you the 2017 NZIFF catalogue, cleverly contrived to look like business as usual. Truth is we too have let loose with some mighty changes, though we think you might like them. First, we’ve worked with fellow local treasures Auckland Theatre Company to make their fabulous new ASB Waterfront Theatre into a glorious NZIFF venue, second only in our cosmos to The Civic. Then we added something very old, but totally rejuvenated, the Hollywood Cinema in Avondale to our satellite system. Third, we’ve extracted our Animation NOW! strand and made it its own jumping New Zealand International Animation Film Festival which screens ahead of NZIFF from 14-18 July. Next, thanks to the sponsorship of Shift 72, we have quietly launched NZIFF On Demand to extend the life of our cinema programme. A fifth change is cause for celebration of a different tenor. Lynn Smart, our staunch and beloved Festival Manager of 28 years standing has exchanged the unremitting pleasure of running Auckland’s International Film Festival for a free pass to finally see some movies. Lynn began inauspiciously, subcontracted from out of the blue by a manager who had found a better offer elsewhere. Since then she’s mentored countless young staff through the Festival and into the world of events and entertainment, including me. Her firm hand and her sense of mischief have had more influence on the shape and tone of NZIFF than she knows. Brava! G19 Report of the New Zealand Film Commission for the year ended 30 June 2011 In accordance with Sections 150 to 157 of the Crown Entities Act 2004, on behalf of the New Zealand Film Commission we present the Annual Report covering the activities of the NZFC for the 12 months ended 30 June 2011. Patsy Reddy Andrew Cornwell Chair Board Member Cover: The Orator (O Le Tulafale)/ Love Birds/ Meathead/ Blue/ My Wedding and Other Secrets/ Manurewa/ Predicament. Highlights We committed production funding to nine new feature films (including two documentaries) and also supported the completion of seven low-budget independent digital features. We provided strategic, logistic and financial support in the form of prints and advertising grants for six new NZFC-financed features released in New Zealand cinemas during the year. NZFC-financed shorts achieved success at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2011. Blue won the Cannes Critics’ Week prize for Best Short and Meathead was one of nine films selected for the Main Competition. The 61st Berlin International Film Festival awarded the Crystal Bear to short film Manurewa. Written and directed by Sam Peacocke, the film screened in the Generation 14plus Youth Section of the competition. Boy continued its success in New Zealand cinemas during 2010/11, finally completing its theatrical run with a record-breaking NZ box office total of $9.3M.

    John Waters (Writer/Director) Born in Baltimore, MD in 1946, John Waters was drawn to movies at an early age, particularly exploitation movies with lurid ad campaigns. He subscribed to Variety at the age of twelve, absorbing the magazine's factual information and its lexicon of insider lingo. This early education would prove useful as the future director began his career giving puppet shows for children's birthday parties. As a teen-ager, Waters began making 8-mm underground movies influenced by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, Walt Disney, Andy Warhol, Russ Meyer, Ingmar Bergman, and Herschell Gordon Lewis. Using Baltimore, which he fondly dubbed the "Hairdo Capitol of the World," as the setting for all his films, Waters assembled a cast of ensemble players, mostly native Baltimoreans and friends of long standing: Divine, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole and Edith Massey. Waters also established lasting relationships with key production people, such as production designer Vincent Peranio, costume designer Van Smith, and casting director Pat Moran, helping to give his films that trademark Waters "look." Waters made his first film, an 8-mm short, Hag in a Black Leather Jacket in 1964, starring Mary Vivian Pearce. Waters followed with Roman Candles in 1966, the first of his films to star Divine and Mink Stole. In 1967, he made his first 16-mm film with Eat Your Makeup, the story of a deranged governess and her lover who kidnap fashion models and force them to model themselves to death. Mondo Trasho, Waters' first feature length film, was completed in 1969 despite the fact that the production ground to a halt when the director and two actors were arrested for "participating in a misdemeanor, to wit: indecent exposure." In 1970, Waters completed what he described as his first "celluloid atrocity," Multiple Maniacs.
