Hill Hawks midfielder OJoel Cross had every reason to expect season 2009 to be memorable. And, so it proved – although not in the manner Cross expected. While he played 12 senior games for the VFL Hawks last year, Cross found it difficult to break into the seniors this season. But, no one could dispute that Cross played consistently good football throughout 2009. This was reflected in his stunning victory in the A. Todd Medal for the fairest and best in the VFL reserves. Cross polled 29 votes to win the award by a staggering 10 votes from Williamstown’s Tom Langlands and Matthew Cravino. Remarkably, Cross, who played his only home and away senior match in round five, didn’t collect his first vote until round six, the week he returned to the reserves. Perhaps stung by his demotion, Cross proceeded to go on an extraordinary tear as he received votes in 12 of the next 15 rounds. And, in one of the rounds he Hawk swoops didn’t poll, the Box Hill Hawks had the bye! So, in effect, Cross collected votes in 12 of on prize a possible 14 games to post a most emphatic victory.
