This study investigates the influence of microhabitat on the presence of several species of fungivorous beetles in basidiocarps of Fomes fomentarius (L.) Kickx. All dead basidiocarps ofF. fomentarius from fragments of forest in an agricultural landscape in Norway were sampled and dissected, and their content of Cisjacquemarti Mellie, 1848/C.alter (Silvferberg, 1991) (did not distinguish between individuals of these two species), C. bidentatus (Olivier, 1790), C. lineatocribratus Mellie, 1848,Ennear- thron cornutum (Gyllenhal, 1827) (Ciidae) andDorcatoma dresdensis Herbst, 1792 (Anobiidae) were identified. Multiple logistic regression models revealed that these species responded differently to the microhabitat variables. The incidence of these beetles was associated with the size (volume), position (height above ground) and moisture content of the basidiocarps. The analyses also indi­ cated possible interspecific interactions between some of the beetles. The presence of some of the species mainly in basidiocarps at particular stages of degradation indicates a successional pattern of occurrence of these species. Together these results indicate that basidiocarps of F. fomentarius are a heterogeneous resource for fungivorous beetles. This has implications for conservation: To pre­ serve the diversity of fungivores, sufficient dead wood has to be left in forests to assure an adequate supply of F. fomentarius basidiocarps of different quality. The variation in species richness conformed well with the hypothesis that more insect species may utilize a fungi species with (1) increasing durational stability, and (2) increasing softness of the carpophores. Strong preferance for certain polypore species was indicated for most of the Cisidae species, and a few species in the other families of beetles and gall midges (Diptera). The host preferances of the Cisidae species were in good agreement with records from other parts of Scandinavia. The host records in two of the gall midge species are new. Seven old-growth, mostly spruce- and pine-dominated, protected forests rich in dead wood were inventoried for polypores and polypore-associated beetles in Finland in 2001–2007. A total of 198 polypore species (86% of the Finnish species list) were examined for associated Coleoptera. Of these, 116 species (59% of the studied species, or 50% of the Finnish polypore mycota) were found to host adults and/or larvae of 176 beetle species. Fifty-six polypore species were utilized by larvae of 21 beetle spe- cies. Many new fungus–beetle associations were discovered among 544 species pairs, including 421 polypore fruit body–adult Coleoptera species co-occurrences, and 123 fruit body–larva associations. Eighty-two species of fungi (41% of the studied species, or 36% of the Finnish polypores) were neither visited nor colonized by Coleoptera. Each species in the database is considered and in each case a distribution map representing records on the database (at 1/10/2017) is presented. The number of records on the database for each species is given in the account in the form (a,b,c,d,e) where 'a' to 'e' are the number of records from VC61 to VC65 respectively. These figures include undated records (see comment on undated records in the paragraph below on mapping). As a recorder, I shall continue to use the vice-county recording system, as the county is thereby divided up into manageable, roughly equal, areas for recording purposes. Polypores (poroid Basidiomycota) and associated beetles were inventoried in the Koitajoki Natura 2000 area (Ilomantsi municipality) and the Kitsi forest fire area (Lieksa), both belonging to the North Karelian Biosphere Reserve of the EU. As a result 105 polypore species were collected; together with earlier reports by other authors, the amount of species totals 121. This is a high number, surpassed in Finland by a few first-rank nature reserves only. Of the species found, 29 are red listed: 2 endangered (EN: Antrodia crassa (P. Karst.) Ryvarden, Piloporia sajanensis (Parmas- to) Niemelä), 11 vulnerable (VU), and 16 near-threatened (NT). Hyphodontia latitans (Bourd. & Galz.) E. Langer has been found in Finland only once from the same area; now it was recollected. The research area is in a way a meeting-point of some north- erly species (e.g. Daedaleopsis septentrionalis (P. S. , NIEMELA, T., SIMILA, M. , KINNUNEN, J. & MANNINEN, 0. 2004: Polypores and associated beetles of the North Karelian Biosphere Reserve, eastern Finland. - Karstenia 44: 35-56. Helsinki. ISSN 0453-3402. Polypores (poroid Basidiomycota) and associated beetles were inventoried in the Koitajoki Natura 2000 area (Ilomantsi municipality) and the Kitsi forest fire area (Lieksa), both belonging to the North Karelian Biosphere Reserve of the EU. As a result 105 polypore species were collected; together with earlier reports by other authors, the amount of species totals 121 . This is a high number, surpassed in Finland by a few first-rank nature reserves onl y. Of the species found, 29 are red listed: 2 endangered (EN: Antrodia crassa (P. Karst.) Ryvarden, Piloporia sajanensis (Parmas­ to) Niemela), 11 vulnerable (VU), and 16 near-threatened (NT). Hyphodontia latitans (Bourd. & Galz.) E. Langer has been found in Finland only once from the same area; now it was recoll ected. The research area is in a way a meeting-point of some north­ erly species (e.g. Daedaleopsis septentrionalis (P. Karst.) Niemela, Trichaptum larici­ num (P. Karst.) Ryvarden), those with an eastern distribution in Fennoscandia (e.g. Trichaptum pargamenum (Fr.) G. Cunn.), and some southern ones (e.g. Pycnoporellus fulgens (Fr.) Donk). S., NIEMELÄ, T. & KINNUNEN, J. 2006: Polypores of western Finnish Lapland and seasonal dynamics of polypore beetles. – Karstenia 46: 37–64. Helsinki. ISSN 0453–3402. The paper summarizes fi eld inventories of polypores and associated beetles in north- western Finland (Lapland) in the years 2001–2004. The research area includes near- virgin or old-growth forests of the Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park and the Pisavaara Strict Nature Reserve, one of the largest areas of protected forests in the country. Alto- gether 132 polypore species were found or (a few) documented from herbarium collec- tions. Special attention was paid to those beetles that visit or inhabit polypores, either to consume their spores and mycelium, or living in polypore basidiocarps at larval stages. Beetle species compositions and their occurrences as larvae versus imagines differed ac- cording to the characteristics of polypore basidiomata. Four kinds (life cycles) of basidi- omata were separated: ephemeral, annual sturdy, annual hibernating, and perennial. The selective effect of these life cycles over attracted beetles is extensively discussed with numerous examples. Parallels were found between the insects living in decayed wood versus mushrooms: while beetles of the ephemeral polypore hosts follow in their biology the “mushroom” pathway (pupating in soil debris), those living in perennial basidiocarps follow the “wood” pathway in both consuming the fungus and in pupating inside the de- caying basidiocarp. The paper includes complete lists of polypores and polypore-linked beetles found in the study area.
