Histoire Paralèlle, a TV show hosted by Marc Ferro with newsreels shown in both countries, 50 years before, became the most watched program of the station, comparing the images the ways in which German and French started the war, as it should be seen and experienced by their fellow citizens. The program became a social- ized process of understanding and historical rewriting, besides standing before the conflict between memory and history, a ques- tion that guided the historiography of the 1990s. This article analyzes Histoire Paralèlle, examining the relationship that it estab- lished with the historiography and filmic production of the historian. Therefore, its theoretical assumptions are re-discussed and historicized in the context of Ferro’s works and through the analysis of three of his programs.

ABSTRACT This article analyzes the insertion of the cinema as a historical source in Marc Ferro’s work. Besides examining the relationship between history and cinema in his texts, it also presents some key elements that drive his reflection about the theme. Finally, this article highlights the way this relationship is put into practice, using concrete examples such as some of the films produced during Weimar’s Republic period. Key-words: film, history, Marc Ferro.

  • An American in the Russian Fighting
Surgeon Grow: An American in the Russian Fighting Laurie S. Stoff The remembrances of Dr. Malcom Grow, an American surgeon who served with the Russian Imperial Army for several years during World War I, serve as a valuable addition to our understanding of the war experiences on the Eastern Front. The war in the East is signifcantly underrepresented in publications on the Great War than that of the Western Front. While one may peruse shelf after shelf of memoirs, journalists’ accounts, and scholarly assessments concerning the participation of Western nations in the First World War, the same cannot be said about Russia’s Great War. Loath to celebrate an imperialist war, in fact, for many, merely perceived as prelude to revolution, the Soviet ofcials failed to engage in extensive ofcial commemoration of the war akin to that of the British and French; Soviet historians similarly shied away from extensive analysis of the confict. Western scholars, as a result of language barriers and general lack of attention to Eastern Europe, tended to focus their histories on Western actors. Russia’s participation in the First World War was thus often overlooked, and ultimately overshadowed by the Revolution, and then, by the devasting impact of the Second World War.1 Nonetheless, the war in Russia deserves considerable attention (and in recent years, has begun to obtain it)2, not only as a result of the fact that it was a primary area of confict, but also because Russia’s Great War was substantively diferent in numerous ways. Perhaps most importantly, the war was far from the stagnant trench warfare along a relatively stable front that characterized the combat in places like France.

  • Braudel's Mediterranean and Italy
Peer Reviewed Title: Braudel’s Mediterranean and Italy Journal Issue: California Italian Studies, 1(1) Author: Marino, John A., UC San Diego Publication Date: 2010 Publication Info: California Italian Studies Permalink: http://escholarship.org/uc/item/5qp086z8 Acknowledgements: Dept. of History; University of California, San Diego; 9500 Gilman Dr.; La Jolla, CA 92093-0104 Local Identifier: ismrg_cisj_8846 Abstract: This article reviews the Italian reception of the French historian Fernand Braudel (1902-1985) and his scholarly work. Beginning with the effusive encomia published in Italian newspapers on his death, it examines the reality behind these hyperbolic claims by asking three questions: 1) What were Braudel’s contributions to the study of history in general and Italian history in particular? 2) How did Braudel’s relationship with Italian scholars and Italian history create such a reputation that an academic historian had become a legend in his own time? 3) What remains of Braudel’s work and method over the past twenty-five years in Italy and beyond? A summary of Braudel’s theses and evaluations by leading historians suggest that while Braudel’s book La Méditerranée et le monde méditerranéen à l’époque de Philippe II may have as many errors as insights, it remains alive as a source of inspiration for the history of early modern Italy, prior to the establishment of the nation state. By subordinating political history to all aspects of life through the investigative methodology of the social sciences and by changing the way we think about time, space, and subject matter in history, Braudel’s vision provides a point of departure both to look back at the historiographical tradition before the volume was first published in 1949 and again at its second edition in 1966, as well as to scan forward to the historiography it has spawned.

Discussions in this article are based on archive material and statistical data from Institut National de l’Audiovisuel, Arte and Deutsches Rundfunk Archiv, an interview with Marc Ferro, the presenter of the show, as well as press material from the time. Keywords: Histoire Paralle`le/Die Woche vor 50 Jahren, World War II, history programmes, nouvelle histoire 1 Introduction Moving pictures and photographs shape quite decisively the individual and collective perception of reported historical events, independent of their role as genuine visual records or reconstructed fictional narratives. In any case, they provide clues to understand the past but also the present.2 In this respect Histoire paralle`le/Die Woche vor 50 Jahren has a unique place among European history shows to date. Its longevity is certainly the most evident reason justifying such an assertion; the diversity of the broadcast newsreel material, the applied methodology and the competence of the invited guests are further factors to be mentioned. The show was part of the initial programming of experimental TV channel La SEPT (Socie´te´ europe´enne de programmes de te´le´vision) in October 1989. The show aired weekly for 12 years competing with news and variety shows on Saturdays in prime time.3 It rapidly found its audience before switching over to ARTE (Association Relative a` la Te´le´vision Europe´enne) in 1992.
