It may seem childish to start by defining what History is, but I think it is essential I to explain why 95% of jobs in the area are uninteresting and only 5% are interesting. That happens mostly because many people have a false idea of the sense in which history is a science. My definition is: history is the science of the general questions, but of the local responses. We cannot imagine a generalization in history that is valid. In other words, we can ask what fascism is, but there are different fascisms in Italy, Spain or Portugal. Therefore, we must preserve the peculiarities and the place — here understood as a specific situation — in the works of historians. To work on the general, but a general that is always set as questions, and not as answers. Let me give an example that is not historiographical (but still usefu. When Freud talks about the Oedipus complex, he poses a good general question: everyone has the Oedipus complex, but none of the complexes is generalizable. The fact that we all have the Oedipus complex tells us nothing. It is a relevant question, but it will have different answers for each of us. -

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — ÉTUDE CRITIQUE / REVIEW ESSAY Ginzburg’s Menocchio: Refutations and Conjectures DAVID LEVINE ZUBEDEH VAHED* CARLO GINZBURG’S way of doing history is based on using “new meth- ods and new standards of proof to bring to light those forms of knowledge or understanding of the world which have been suppressed or lost”.1 For most of his English-speaking readers, the proof of this assertion has been found in The Cheese and the Worms: The Cosmos of a Sixteenth-Century Miller.2 Domenico Scandella, the sixteenth-century miller who was called by the nickname “Menocchio” by his contemporaries, was born in 1532 in the pre- Alp foothills of Friuli, about 100 kilometres north of Venice. As he told the court, “I am from Montereale, in the diocese of Concordia. My father was called Zuane and my mother Menega and I have lived in Montereale most of my life, except for two years when I was banished, of which I spent one in Arba and one in Cargna, and I was banished for being in a brawl.”3 Menoc- chio’s creative and imaginative ideas about the creation of the world — and his unconventional opinions about orthodox Catholicism — brought him to * David Levine is professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Tor- onto. In addition, and perhaps more than the original editions, translations into the languages of the various countries are interesting, as obviously reaching an audience both broader and less specifically trained than the “insiders”. Another impSortant point is the time of diffusion, not only of Le Goff’s work, but also of 20th century French historical thought —the so- called “Annales school”— and the overcoming of barriers between historiography and other human sciences, such as anthropology and ethnology; the differences between diverse cultures are evident and relevant. Histoire Paralèlle, a TV show hosted by Marc Ferro with newsreels shown in both countries, 50 years before, became the most watched program of the station, comparing the images the ways in which German and French started the war, as it should be seen and experienced by their fellow citizens. The program became a social- ized process of understanding and historical rewriting, besides standing before the conflict between memory and history, a ques- tion that guided the historiography of the 1990s. This article analyzes Histoire Paralèlle, examining the relationship that it estab- lished with the historiography and filmic production of the historian. Therefore, its theoretical assumptions are re-discussed and historicized in the context of Ferro’s works and through the analysis of three of his programs. -

It reflects, too, the generosity of the donation which made this extended publication possible. The syllabus for 2006-7, printed at the back, suggests not only the health of the society, but its steady move in the direction of new material, new interests. Visitors and new members are always welcome, and we are all warmly invited to the annual Scott lecture jointly sponsored by the English Literature department and the Faculty of Advocates in October. A word of thanks for all the help the Society received – especially from its new co-Chair Aileen Christianson – during the President’s enforced absence in Spring 2006. Thanks, too, to the University of Edinburgh for its continued generosity as our host for our meetings, and to the members who often anonymously ensure the Society’s continued smooth running. 2006 saw the recognition of the Carlyle Letters’ international importance in the award by the new Arts and Humanities Research Council of a very substantial grant – well over £600,000 – to ensure the editing and publication of the next three annual volumes. At a time when competition for grants has never been stronger, this is a very gratifying and encouraging outcome. In the USA, too, a very substantial grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities means that later this year the eCarlyle project should become “live” on the internet, and subscribers will be able to access all the volumes to date in this form. -

[email protected] El 15 de enero de 1929 nació la Revista de la que iba a ser la afamada Escuela de los Anales, un tercer hito historiográfico como el positivismo y el marxismo. Esta publicación fue dirigida por dos grandes historiadores franceses, Marc Bloch y Lucien Febvre, quienes eran ya unos reconocidos historiadores al haber publicado Los reyes taumaturgos, el primero y Martín Lutero. Un destino, el segundo. Esta Escuela se ha especializado en el estudio de las estructuras mentales y se le reconoce como el inicio de la llamada historia de las mentalidades colectivas. La ciudad Estrasburgo, en límites con Alemania, vio nacer la Escuela de los Anales, cuando el Estado francés creyó oportuno enviar allí lo mejor de su intelectualidad como contrapeso a la cultura germánica. En el primitivo directorio de la Revista de Anales figuran el sociólogo de la memoria Maurice Halbwachs, los historiadores Henry Hauser y el medievalista belga Henry Perenne, entre otros. Estos hombres se propusieron hacer una historia distinta a la de Leopold Von Ranke, es decir una historia no sólo política y afincada en los grandes hombres, batallas y tratados internacionales, sino una historia de todos los grupos humanos. En este sentido es una clara superación del historicismo alemán y del positivismo. Con Anales se produce una profunda imbricación de la historia con otras ciencias sociales: la geografía de Vidal de la Blanche, la sociología durkheniana, la antropología de Mauss y Levi Bruhl, la lingüística de Saussure, y eventualmente el psicoanálisis freudiano. -

A Review of Fifteen Historians of Rise and Decline Historians, philosophers and political scientists have asked such questions for a long time and developed theories about rise, thriving and decline. -

Chapter 1 The Historiography of Social Movements å Halfway through the twentieth century, Fernand Braudel raised a call for establishing a productive dialogue between history and the social sciences whereby history might freely employ indispensable concepts that it was incapable of developing by itself, and the social sciences might acquire the temporal depth they lacked. He went on to state that there would be no social science ‘other than by the reconciliation in a simultaneous practice of our different crafts’. The convergence of history with the social sciences was baptized ‘social history’ and later, in the United States, as ‘historical sociology’ to underline sociologists’ shift towards historiography.1 At the fi rst international congress of historical sciences held after the Second World War in Paris, 1950, Eric Hobsbawm was involved in the section on social history, ‘probably the fi rst in any historical congress’, as he recalls in his autobiography.2 It gained momentum in 1952 with the creation of the British journal Past and Present, which brought to- gether a group of Marxist historians (Hobsbawm himself, Christopher Hill, Rodney Hilton, George Rudé, and E.P. Thompson), joined by such prominent scholars as Lawrence Stone, John Elliot and Moses Finley. Meanwhile, in the United States, historical sociology took its fi rst steps forward with Barrington Moore, the Harvard teacher of Charles Tilly. It would be very hard to fi nd a sociologist who has taken better ad- vantage of history than Tilly. With the exception of his fi rst book, on the counter-revolution in the Vendée (published in 1964), long duration, which Braudel conceptualized as the history of structures, is the time- frame for Tilly’s analysis, whether it be of social struggles in France, state systems, European revolutions, democracy or social movements worldwide. -

Além de examinar a relação entre história e o cinema em seus textos, ele também sistematiza as noções que comandam a reflexão de ferro sobre o tema. Por último, ressalta a maneira pela qual se efetiva esta relação por meio do estudo de alguns casos concretos, como os filmes feitos durante o período da República de Weimar. Palavras-chave: cinema, história, Marc Ferro. ABSTRACT This article analyzes the insertion of the cinema as a historical source in Marc Ferro’s work. Besides examining the relationship between history and cinema in his texts, it also presents some key elements that drive his reflection about the theme. Finally, this article highlights the way this relationship is put into practice, using concrete examples such as some of the films produced during Weimar’s Republic period.
