1 FORUM: Wartime Globalization in Asia The transnational mission of an Indian war correspondent: P. R. S. Mani in Southeast Asia, 1944 – 1946 Heather Goodall University of Technology Sydney [email protected] with Mark Ravinder Frost University of Essex [email protected] Abstract: This article, based on new archival materials, reconstructs the experiences and observations of an Indian war correspondent as, from 1944 to 1946, he covered the advance of Indian soldiers of the British-led Indian Army from northeast India, through Burma to Malaya at the war's end, then to their eventual deployment with the South East Asian Command in Java after the Japanese surrender. As it transpired, Captain P. R. S. Mani worked as an enlisted public relations officer of the British-led Indian Army but also sustained his commitment as a patriotic Indian nationalist, who gathered intelligence on the Indian diaspora in Southeast Asia and on the impact of Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army. Relatively little scholarship has focused on Asian war journalism. Mani’s tension-ridden role as a self-styled ‘Indian Army observer’ provides an illuminating insight into the way Britain’s lines of communication were appropriated and subverted during wartime and beyond, and into the way his own nationalism was reshaped by his unofficial transnational activities. ……………………………………………….. Oleh karenanya, kehidupan diwarnai dengan yin dan yang. Keseluruhan Alam Semesta adalah satu mekanisme. Jika salah satu bagian darinya keluar dari aturan, maka bagian lainnya juga akan keluar dari aturan. Segala sesuatu cenderung menarik sesuatu yang sejenis dengannya. Oleh karenanya, jika salah satu berjalan sesuai kebenaran, maka keseluruhan yang lain juga akan berjalan sesuai kebenaran. Pembalikan adalah ketetapan hukum alam. Ketika sesuatu telah mencapai titik ekstrem, maka cenderung akan berbalik darinya. Segala sesuatu memiliki batasan kekuatan, seperti bola yang dilambungkan ke atas, setelah ia mencapai titik tertingginya, maka bola akan kembali ke tempat semulanya (jatuh). Oleh karenanya, segala sesuatu harus hidup sewajarnya, mengambil jalan tengah, jangan terlalu sedikit dan terlalu banyak (jangan mengambil langkah ekstrem). v PERSEMBAHAN Alhamdulillahirobbil „alamin. To illumi- nate the potentials of discourse analysis, the article also presents a case study of the application of this methodology in analysing a religious tolerance education project in an under-represented Global South country, Indonesia – where religious conservatism and intolerance are on the rise. Following the contact hypothesis, the project involved students from different religions working on a film-making group assignment about religious tolerance. Signs of Multilingualism at Religious Places in Surabaya: a Linguistic Landscape Study
Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research (ASSEHR), volume 228 International Conference on Language Phenomena in Multimodal Communication (KLUA 2018) Signs of Multilingualism at Religious Places in Surabaya: A Linguistic Landscape Study Ali Wafa, Universitas Airlangga Sheila Wijayanti, Universitas Airlangga Abstract This paper aims to present the languages used as public signs at the places of worship in Surabaya. The area is selected for its multilingual society. The data is in the forms of photos of outdoor and indoor signs and is taken from ten outstanding religious places in the city namely two mosques, two churches, two Chinese temples (klenteng), two Hindu temples (pura), and two Buddhist temples (vihara). Three hundred and eighty six public signs are collected. As stated by Landry and Bourhis (1997) the collected data is then analyzed based on the landscape linguistic theory. The results demonstrate that the languages as public signs found in the ten places of worship vary, i.e., Indonesian, Balinese, Javanese, Madurese, Malay, English, Chinese, Arabic, Pāli language, Latin language, German, French, Dutch and Japanese. However, Indonesian remains the most used language at mosques, churches, and Buddhist temples. However, Chinese language is the most frequently used at Chinese temples. Meanwhile, Indonesian and Balinese language almost have the same position at Hindu temples.
