The Life and Works of Dorothy Howell By Vincent James Byrne A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of Master of Arts. Abstract Since the 1950s, the music of Dorothy Gertrude Howell (1898 – 1982) has fallen into obscurity. Despite being called ‘the finest woman composer of her era’1 and being popularly dubbed ‘the English Richard Strauss’, following the performance of her debut orchestral work Lamia (1919), Howell’s place in twentieth century British music has largely been forgotten. Dorothy Howell: Her Life and Works is the largest study to date on the composer. Based on original research, undertaken at the private archives of the Dorothy Howell Trust, the thesis provides a detailed account of the composer’s life and catalogue of her works. The study is divided into three sections. The first section is biographical, providing a detailed and chronological account of the composer’s life.

ALEXANDER (von) ZEMLINSKY TIMELINE INTRODUCTION My Zemlinsky Timeline was first published online in 2001 at the website Carolina Classical Connection with the URL http://classicalmus.hispeed.com/zemlinsky and long before there was any substantive information online about Zemlinsky including Wikipedia. In February 2008, the site’s owner Charles Moss died suddenly and within days of his death his site was removed and all the material on it was gone, including this timeline. In the years that it was up, the timeline received welcome recognition and was used by researchers needing a condensed version of Zemlinsky’s life and (selected) works within an historical context. This recognition included my having it stolen by a Belgian man who violated my copyright and passed it off as his own. I am happy to say that he appears to have left the scene. I have made no changes to the timeline since its initial publication because, happily, much new research and writing – as well as increased performances and recordings – have appeared to add to the online wealth of information and sources about Zemlinsky. • Site and Sanctuary in Holocaust Memorial Compositions by Krzysztof Penderecki and Ruth Fazal
SITE AND SANCTUARY IN HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL COMPOSITIONS BY KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI AND RUTH FAZAL Katherine L. Hubley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2009 Committee: Robert Fallon, Advisor Mary Natvig © 2009 Katherine Hubley All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Robert Fallon, Advisor This interdisciplinary thesis seeks to show how musical Holocaust memorial works that contain theatrical elements in the text and musical score fulfill a social psychological need and provide opportunities for collective cathartic experience for the listener. The study draws on the academic fields of aesthetics, musicology, German history, theater and performance studies, Jewish and Christian religious studies, psychological trauma theory, and literature and the environment studies. I focus on two contrasting compositions, Dies Irae by Krzysztof Penderecki and Oratorio Terezin by Ruth Fazal. Through textual and musical analysis, I illustrate how the experience of hearing performances of these works is analogous to a current therapeutic approach for working through the effects of mass trauma. iv I dedicate this thesis to my dear father and friend, Dr. Charles Emerson Hubley, who taught me how to write. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my committee, Dr. Robert Fallon and Dr. Mary Natvig, for generously providing their support and guidance, sharing their time and knowledge, and offering their bottomless patience during the process of writing this thesis. vi PREFACE Because this thesis concerns how the Holocaust influenced people’s lives, I am compelled to write about how the Holocaust played a role in my own life.

  • Catalogue of Compositions
Catalogue of Compositions Horst Weber’s catalogue of 19711 and a dissertation by Lawrence A. Oncley2 were the first systematic surveys of Zemlinsky’s oeuvre, followed in 1978 by Rudolph Stefan’s comprehensive list of published items.3 Detailed examination of the Zemlinsky Collection at The Library of Congress was carried out by Wayne Shirley, who in 1980 drew up a Revised List4 of manuscript holdings, correcting many earlier errors of dating and titling. Work on the Collection continued until 1993, when several manuscript folders were reorganized, their material regrouped and a new, more precise Guide was issued.5 Since then, a few fragments have been reunited, and some items presumed lost have been salvaged – notably the finale of the D minor symphony and the orchestral song Erdeinsamkeit. The chronological section of this catalogue includes incomplete or fragmentary items.6 Manuscript locations are given where known, whereby ‘LoC’ numbers refer to the Guide mentioned above; publication details are included where applicable; the date and place of first performance are included where ascertainable. Works are listed according to their date of completion: where this is uncertain, the chronology inevitably remains conjectural. The systematic section of the catalogue includes unpublished works, but omits incomplete and fragmentary items. With regard to opus numbers Rudolph Stefan has written:7 1 Horst Weber, ‘Zemlinsky in Wien 1871–1911’, Archiv für Musikwissenschaft, xxxviii (1971), 77–90. Weber’s later work lists – in his book Alexander Zemlinsky, Österreichische Komponisten des XX. Jahrhunderts, xxiii, Vienna, 1977 and in the 1980 edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, xx, 666 – are less comprehensive.

Hardly an acknowledged composer of our times might be found who has not written more than one commissioned work for chamber orchestral formations! The rise of the chamber orchestra as an alternative to the full orchestra was occasioned by various factors. First, by the hypertrophy of the massive forces of late- romantic orchestration in Strauss, Mahler, Glière, Koechlin, Schreker, Respighi, and Bax or even in the early Schönberg, which culminated in an increasingly dominant display of tonal excesses as an end in itself.
