As we approach the 58th anniversary (May 12) of the merger between Unitarians and Universalists we will embrace the pracce of looking at something from all sides. Did you know it was the youth that actually iniated the merger? Today we will also recognize our current youth religious educaon program and the people that make it happen. YUUth Ensemble and the choir will be providing music. This is a service for all ages. Sunday, May 12, 2019 @ 9:30am & 11:15am Curiosity and Empathy by Reverend Linda Slabon Curiosity is a gi but to act on it requires courage. Empathy is a skill and to learn it enables us to move from a place of shame to compassion and courage. On this Mother's Day come listen to voices of curiosity, empathy and courage in the songs sung by Cymbal, a UU women's singing group, in the meditave music of crystal tone bowls, and in Rev. Linda's sermon: "Every Long Journey". Rev. Linda Slabon served the UU Fellowship of DeKalb for 26 years along with her spouse, Dr. Toni Tollerud, who served as Music Director. Now rered, Linda is a Minister Emerita, a DeKalb County Board member, and completes the laundry promptly. As a rered professor from Northern Illinois University, Toni does state-wide seminars on supervision and trauma, and gardens with passion. -

Abstract Since the 1950s, the music of Dorothy Gertrude Howell (1898 – 1982) has fallen into obscurity. Despite being called ‘the finest woman composer of her era’1 and being popularly dubbed ‘the English Richard Strauss’, following the performance of her debut orchestral work Lamia (1919), Howell’s place in twentieth century British music has largely been forgotten. Dorothy Howell: Her Life and Works is the largest study to date on the composer. Based on original research, undertaken at the private archives of the Dorothy Howell Trust, the thesis provides a detailed account of the composer’s life and catalogue of her works. The study is divided into three sections. The first section is biographical, providing a detailed and chronological account of the composer’s life. -

ALEXANDER (von) ZEMLINSKY TIMELINE INTRODUCTION My Zemlinsky Timeline was first published online in 2001 at the website Carolina Classical Connection with the URL http://classicalmus.hispeed.com/zemlinsky and long before there was any substantive information online about Zemlinsky including Wikipedia. In February 2008, the site’s owner Charles Moss died suddenly and within days of his death his site was removed and all the material on it was gone, including this timeline. In the years that it was up, the timeline received welcome recognition and was used by researchers needing a condensed version of Zemlinsky’s life and (selected) works within an historical context. This recognition included my having it stolen by a Belgian man who violated my copyright and passed it off as his own. I am happy to say that he appears to have left the scene. I have made no changes to the timeline since its initial publication because, happily, much new research and writing – as well as increased performances and recordings – have appeared to add to the online wealth of information and sources about Zemlinsky.
