Who Will Give Answer to the Call of My Voice? Sound in the Work of Tony Oursler By Tony Conrad Published in Ediciones Poligrafa Aug. 1, 2001 I am not a talking head. (Tony Oursler's image as devil, projected on a horned-head maquette; Machine, 2000) Pictures are more civil than noise. Only exceptionally is the clangor of clashing audio tracks less than hellish in museum efforts to exhibit multiple works with sound. Whether the pieces are films, 1recorded performances, sound works, or video installations, their simultaneous audio emanations compete and quarrel among one another in the resonant "white cube" in ways that pictures never would. The smooth clear rectilinear walls and hardwood floors of the modern museum gallery are the antithesis of a recording studio, with its soundproofing and wall-to-wall carpeting. When you step into a Tony Oursler show, though, the overlapping sound tracks somehow garble together, cohering as they weave an infernal sonic tapestry. Here sighs and cries and wails coiled and recoiled on the starless air, spilling my soul to tears. A confusion of tongues and monstrous accents toiled in pain and anger. Voices hoarse and shrill and sounds of blows, all intermingled, raised tumult and pandemonium that still whirls on the air forever dirty with it as if a whirlwind sucked at sand. Dante, Inferno, III:22-29 Almost any of Tony Oursler's shows has confronted the visitor with a cacophony of voice tracks, mingling among a melange of projected images, each voicing its own complaints, introspective remarks, or censorious social commentary.

“Sensing Time” Yasmina Chavez Electronic Integrated Arts MFA 2016 Thesis School of Art and Design - NYSCC at Alfred University Thesis Exhibit: April 9, 2016 Committee Members: Peer Bode (Chair), Barbara Lattanzi, Joseph Scheer Introduction In Las Vegas, Nevada, where I’m from, there are three different coexisting strata of time: casinos or casino environments, the regular 24-hour clock calendar day society, and the desert. The casino environment consists of any place with gambling facilities. This includes any place with a gambling license from the major touristic casinos like the MGM to your neighborhood grocery stores or even, on your way out of the city, the airport. The casino environment furnishes the experience of timelessness, which is activated through an infinitely looping hand action. Pushing buttons or pulling levers (slot machine), holding, flicking or arranging cards (table games), and rolling or throwing dice (roulette table) are some examples of this looping hand action. The action holds the gambler in place until they run out of money, win, or something from 24-hour calendar day society pulls them away. Both the casino environment and the 24-hour calendar day society weave in and out of each other like soap bubbles in the wind. These two bubbles of time exist inside a larger bubble – the desert, which visibly surrounds the city a full 360 degrees. It is not only visible everywhere, but it is also felt through the tremendous heat and dry air that it breathes. On some of the hottest days everything seems to pause, even the air. Time in the desert is experienced on a massive scale, as if the land, which exudes a sense of finality, an end of calendar-time and eternality of both, had swallowed time.

  • 1 Ervin Jarek 2017 PHD.Pdf
ii © Copyright by Jarek Paul Ervin All Rights Reserved May 2017 iii ABSTRACT My dissertation takes a speculative cue from the reception of 1970s New York punk, which is typically treated as both rule – the symbolic site of origin – and exception – a protean moment before the crystallization of punk proper. For this reason, artists such as Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, the Ramones, and Blondie are today afforded the simultaneous status of originators, interlopers, innovators, and successors. This has led both to the genre’s canonicity in the music world and its general neglect within scholarship. I argue that punk ought to be understood less as a set of stylistic precepts (ones that could be originated and then developed), than as a set of philosophical claims about the character of rock music in the 1970s. Punk artists such as Patti Smith, Jayne County, and the Ramones developed an aesthetic theory through sound. This was an act of accounting, which foregrounded the role of historical memory and recast a mode of reflexive imagination as musical practice. At times mournful, at times optimistic about the possibility of reconciliation, punk was a restorative aesthetics, an attempt to forge a new path on memories of rock’s past. My first chapter looks at the relationship between early punk and rock music, its ostensible music parent. Through close readings of writing by important punk critics including Greil Marcus, Lester Bangs, and Ellen Willis – as well as analyses of songs by the Velvet Underground and Suicide – I argue that a historical materialist approach offers a new in-road to old debates about punk’s progressive/regressive musical character.

  • Industrial Music: a Listening Guide
Industrial Music: A Listening Guide 1. During class on Thursday, we had a brief discussion of front men for bands who simply cannot sing – John Lydon of PiL, for example. It is worthwhile to follow up on this and ask why anyone would buy a recording made by a bad singer. As one man’s answer, read the recent article out of the Chronicle of Higher Education on ”The Discrete Charm of the Bad Voice.” In this article, Kevin Dettmar focuses on two singers, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, but he also has something to say about punk and postpunk, even Radiohead for that matter. • Dettmar makes a distinction between merely mediocre voices and those that are bad (that is, bad but at the same time incredibly powerful). How does he classify Dylan’s and Young’s voices – as mediocre or as bad? • Dettmar decides not to include the punk-rock voice in his discussion. What does he have to say about the bad punk rock voice and how it fits well with the genre? • Why does the author say about how the appearance of amateurism affects our response to a singer and his/her song? Why do we respond to it? • In the lecture on Sixties Rock, we discussed the important characteristic that Bob Dylan brought from Folk music into rock. After Dylan we listened to rock music differently and judged it by different criteria. What did Dylan bring from folk music that rock had never cared about before? What does this have to do with Dettmar’s conclusion? 2.

BRAND NEW, Dream Baby Dream: Suicide: A New York City Story, Appearing in early 70s New York City as primal prototype street punks, Suicide are now hailed as one of the most important and influential groups of the 20th century, inspiring that decade's major musical movements but too feared and shunned to be awarded their rightful acclaim at the time. Confronting shocked audiences with their electronic "New York blues", singer Alan Vega and instrumentalist Martin Rev fearlessly mirrored the city's sleazy underbelly and decay on blood-freezing gutter- scapes such as 'Ghost Rider' and 'Frankie Teardrop' while invoking doo-wop purity on timeless love songs like 'Cheree' and 'Dream Baby Dream'.The book charts Suicide's uncompromising roller coaster from formative days in performance art and avant garde experimentation to chaotic early shows at drug-infested downtown hotbed the Project of Living Artists.Along with detailed accounts of Suicide's influences, contemporaries and environment which spawned them, the book will position the duo as one of New York's most pivotal but derided outfits as the story moves through their pioneering first album, 1978's shockingly violent UK tour supporting The Clash and subsequent recordings, live sorties and respective parallel solo careers, going up... THE SURVIVING PARTIES A THESIS IN Creative Writing and Media Arts Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF FINE ARTS by BENEDICT E. BIERSMITH Columbia College, 2007 Kansas City, Missouri 2017 © 2017 BENEDICT E. BIERSMITH ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE SURVIVING PARTIES Benedict E. Biersmith, Candidate for the Master of Fine Arts Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2017\ ABSTRACT This thesis is a collection of short stories that were written and re-written between my time as an undergraduate at Columbia College and my time as a Graduate Student at UMKC. These stories were picked out from many fictional works because they each present a youthful perspective through a unique lens. These stories are meant to offer different points of view from protagonists who are all on their way somewhere, for better or worse. The goal of this thesis was to take these budding protagonists and bundle them together into some sort of cohesive unit. The characters in these stories all struggle with family members, substances and authority figures who offer which gives them each an individualized take on the world around them. There is a sense of suburban dread that inhabits a lot of the peace, and I several of these characters want nothing more than to break out of their current setting. What ultimately unites these characters though, none of whom will ever meet one another, is their struggle to exist in places where they are told they cannot exist. This collection is about fitting into a world that doesn’t want you, and how no one’s past can dictate anyone else’s future.
