Hardback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Dream Baby Dream: Suicide: A New York City Story, Appearing in early 70s New York City as primal prototype street punks, Suicide are now hailed as one of the most important and influential groups of the 20th century, inspiring that decade's major musical movements but too feared and shunned to be awarded their rightful acclaim at the time. Confronting shocked audiences with their electronic "New York blues", singer Alan Vega and instrumentalist Martin Rev fearlessly mirrored the city's sleazy underbelly and decay on blood-freezing gutter- scapes such as 'Ghost Rider' and 'Frankie Teardrop' while invoking doo-wop purity on timeless love songs like 'Cheree' and 'Dream Baby Dream'.The book charts Suicide's uncompromising roller coaster from formative days in performance art and avant garde experimentation to chaotic early shows at drug-infested downtown hotbed the Project of Living Artists.Along with detailed accounts of Suicide's influences, contemporaries and environment which spawned them, the book will position the duo as one of New York's most pivotal but derided outfits as the story moves through their pioneering first album, 1978's shockingly violent UK tour supporting The Clash and subsequent recordings, live sorties and respective parallel solo careers, going up... Who Will Give Answer to the Call of My Voice? Sound in the Work of Tony Oursler By Tony Conrad Published in Ediciones Poligrafa Aug. 1, 2001 I am not a talking head. (Tony Oursler's image as devil, projected on a horned-head maquette; Machine, 2000) Pictures are more civil than noise. Only exceptionally is the clangor of clashing audio tracks less than hellish in museum efforts to exhibit multiple works with sound. Whether the pieces are films, 1recorded performances, sound works, or video installations, their simultaneous audio emanations compete and quarrel among one another in the resonant "white cube" in ways that pictures never would. The smooth clear rectilinear walls and hardwood floors of the modern museum gallery are the antithesis of a recording studio, with its soundproofing and wall-to-wall carpeting. When you step into a Tony Oursler show, though, the overlapping sound tracks somehow garble together, cohering as they weave an infernal sonic tapestry. Here sighs and cries and wails coiled and recoiled on the starless air, spilling my soul to tears. A confusion of tongues and monstrous accents toiled in pain and anger. Voices hoarse and shrill and sounds of blows, all intermingled, raised tumult and pandemonium that still whirls on the air forever dirty with it as if a whirlwind sucked at sand. Dante, Inferno, III:22-29 Almost any of Tony Oursler's shows has confronted the visitor with a cacophony of voice tracks, mingling among a melange of projected images, each voicing its own complaints, introspective remarks, or censorious social commentary.

“Sensing Time” Yasmina Chavez Electronic Integrated Arts MFA 2016 Thesis School of Art and Design - NYSCC at Alfred University Thesis Exhibit: April 9, 2016 Committee Members: Peer Bode (Chair), Barbara Lattanzi, Joseph Scheer Introduction In Las Vegas, Nevada, where I’m from, there are three different coexisting strata of time: casinos or casino environments, the regular 24-hour clock calendar day society, and the desert. The casino environment consists of any place with gambling facilities. This includes any place with a gambling license from the major touristic casinos like the MGM to your neighborhood grocery stores or even, on your way out of the city, the airport. The casino environment furnishes the experience of timelessness, which is activated through an infinitely looping hand action. Pushing buttons or pulling levers (slot machine), holding, flicking or arranging cards (table games), and rolling or throwing dice (roulette table) are some examples of this looping hand action. The action holds the gambler in place until they run out of money, win, or something from 24-hour calendar day society pulls them away. Both the casino environment and the 24-hour calendar day society weave in and out of each other like soap bubbles in the wind. These two bubbles of time exist inside a larger bubble – the desert, which visibly surrounds the city a full 360 degrees. It is not only visible everywhere, but it is also felt through the tremendous heat and dry air that it breathes. On some of the hottest days everything seems to pause, even the air. Time in the desert is experienced on a massive scale, as if the land, which exudes a sense of finality, an end of calendar-time and eternality of both, had swallowed time.

The "blank generation" came out of a moral vacuum. While punks roamed the suburban landscape, blue-collar workers were feeling the pinch of an economic revolution: human society had left the industrial age and entered the post-industrial age, the age in which services (such as software) prevail over manufacturing. Computers now rule the world, from Wall Street to Boeing. The assembly line took away a bit of the personality of the worker, but that was nothing: the new service- based economy takes away the worker completely, physically. In the post-industrial society the individual is even less of a "person". The individual is merely a cog in a huge organism of interconnected parts that works at the beat of a gigantic network of computers. This highly sophisticated economy treats the individual as a number, as a statistic. The goal is no longer to create a robot that behaves like a human being, but to create a human being that behaves like a robot: robots are efficient and lead to manageable and profitable businesses, whereas humans are inefficient and difficult to manage.

  • Martin Rev See Me Ridin’
MARTIN REV SEE ME RIDIN’ Reissue (originally released 1996) CD / LP / Digital Out: October 16th 2020 Romantic Energy Martin Rev’s fourth solo album See Me Ridin’ was released on the New York label Reachout International Records (ROIR) in 1996. Received by the critics with amazement, it proved to be a watershed moment in his career. Journalist Neil Cooper wrote at the time: "When I first heard Rev's new record, I was taken aback. Was he serious? Was this some inside joke? He had to be kidding - or was he mentally over the top!" Its reception echoed that of the 1992 Suicide album Why Be Blue, which sprung such a surprise on fans of the duo comprising Martin Rev and Alan Vegas. On this particular solo album, Rev repeated the trick of dispensing with rough, brittle sounds. This was not Rev seeking to distance himself from his musical origins, he was actually getting back closer to his roots. Signs of Martin Rev’s formative influence as an electronic music pioneer can be seen in many places. Virtually no one would have expected him to deliver a doo-wop album, but in the light of Rev’s socialisation and artistic tradition, it reflects a logical process of absolute reduction. Martin Rev crafted See Me Ridin’ as a kind of power pop hybrid, an album which owed much to the R&B and doo- wop of the 1950s and 1960s; the music which a youthful Martin Rev heard on the streets of New York, the soundtrack to his teenage years which had such an intense effect on him and would resurface in his own works.
