Program Booklet 2018 38th Annual Season June 17-24, 2018 Welcome to the 38th annual Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar! ou’re here, we’re delighted, welcome — or welcome back! The Baroque YMusic Festival continues the fine tradition established by our founder, Burton Karson, in presenting five concerts over eight days. Now in her eighth year as the Festival’s artistic director, internationally re- nowned violinist Elizabeth Blumentstock has programmed an exquisite series of musical treasures for your listening enjoyment. As always, our musicians perform in Baroque style using original instruments or authentic historical rep- licas. Likewise, we select venues that evoke the intimate audience experience of earlier centuries. Our focus this season is primarily on French repertoire, with a few notable ex- cursions to other areas. The opening concert celebrates two preeminent musical establishments in Paris with works by Leclair, Rameau and others. Monday sees the promised return of the organ recital in an exploration of J.S. Bach and the French organ style. As we move midweek to the Sherman Gardens, we also re- turn to our well-received 17th-century repertoire featured in 2017, with Wednes- day’s large-scale sonatas of the “Stylus Phantasticus” that will amaze. Friday our program will showcase Parisian solo sonatas and, in our Finale on Sunday, we will dive into one of Handel’s most magical operas, Orlando. Brass music al fresco precedes each concert, with the addition of special horn fanfares to announce the Festival Finale on June 24. Following every perform- ance, a wine and waters reception invites audience members to mingle with each other as well as with the musicians. Thanks for being an integral part of this vibrant and venerable musical tradi- tion. Berto was raised in northeast Brazil where he learned to enjoy several different types of fruits. In the last twenty years, he has experimented growing rare and unusual fruits from all over the world including some varieties native to the Amazon region. He has a spectacular jaboticaba arbor at his home in South Ft. Myers. He is an active member with the Bonita Springs Tropical Fruit Club and with the Caloosa Rare Fruit Exchange. Berto’s collection includes myrciarias, eugenias, pouterias, annonas, mangiferas, and campomanesias. Despite having various chronic health issues, this beautiful (inside and out), aging soul always puts the needs/wants of doing for others on the top of her daily to do list. She may be making sure her peers at the social center are getting their needs met (and will do what she can to assist them), she may be making wonderful scarves to be gifted as “just because” gifts, or she may be going around table to table greeting each individual with a huge smile and warm greeting…what a true lady Shirley is. When asked, “why the Sternwheeler?” Shirley responded there were two reasons. First, this was something that she and her daughter, Carol had always wanted to do so why not take this amazing opportunity to go? And secondly, Shirley told a brief story of a woman she once knew who had lived in France not far from the Eiffle Tower. The woman never took the opportunity to see this glorious landmark even though it was so closer to her. Shirley then stated, “The Columbia River is one of the most beautiful and historic rivers…this was my Eiffle Tower!” Shirley then gave some words of wisdom expressing that we should all enjoy the beauty that is all around us and stated if tourists come to visit these places in our backyard, we should certainly go and enjoy them as well.

    July 2016 – Achachairu (Bolivian Mangosteen) Bonita Springs Tropical Fruit Club Newsletter Who we are and what we do: The Bonita Springs Tropical Fruit Club, Inc., is an educational not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to inform, educate and advise members and the public in the selection of tropical and subtropical fruiting plants and trees, to encourage their cultivation, and to provide a social forum where members can freely exchange plant material and information. The club cooperates with many organizations, and provides a basis for producing new cultivars. We function in any legal manner to further the above stated aims. Meetings: Regular membership meetings that include an educational program are held the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings begin with a tasting table at 6:45 PM followed by a program at 7:15 PM, at the First United Methodist Church, 27690 Shriver Avenue, Bonita Springs. The meetings are held in the "Fellowship Hall" meeting room. Workshops: Workshops (monthly discussions) are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. This open format encourages discussion and sharing of fruits and information. Bring in your fruits, plants, seeds, leaves, insects, photos, recipes, etc. This is a great chance to get answers to specific questions, and there always seems to be a local expert on hand! Alice Culin-Ellison, Co-Artistic Director Alice Culin-Ellison, violinist and co-Artistic Director of Bourbon Baroque, is a versatile historical performer with training in over 400 years of repertoire. As concertmaster, Alice has led productions of Handel’s Acis and Galatea and Purcell’s King Arthur, and soloed with various ensembles.
