PT-01 Meso- to Neoproterozoic Stratigraphic Sequences in Jixian, Tianjin Leaders: Li Huaikun and Zhu Shixing, Tianjin Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources, [email protected], [email protected]

Description: This field trip is focused on the Meso- to early Neoproterozoic strati- graphic sequences in the Jixian area ca. 90 km to the east of Beijing, namely the well- known Jixian section, the Standard Section for the Meso- to early Neoproterozoic in China, as granted by the China Stratigraphy Commission. The sequences in the Jixian section can be subdivided into three “systems” or groups (with twelve forma- tions), the Changcheng System (ca.1800-1400Ma), the Jixian System (ca.1400-1000 Ma) and the Qingbaikou System (ca.1000-820 Ma) in ascending order, with a total thickness of 9133 m. These are are underlain by Neoarchaean granitic gneiss and over- lain by the middle part of the lower . The time range of the Proterozoic se- quences in the Jixian section is from ca.1800 Ma to 820 Ma. The lower Changcheng System (1800 ~ 1600 Ma), representing a rifting sequence, is composed of fluvial con- glomerate and sandstone at its base and in its lower parts, and dominantly shallow ma- rine clastic and carbonate rocks in its middle and upper parts, with alkaline volcanics in the Tuanshanzi and Dahongyu Formations (the upper two formations). The top Chang- cheng System (1600 ~ 1400 Ma) and the Jixian System, representing a stable carbonate platform, are dominated by carbonates with stromatolites and containing various assem- blages of microscopic fossil algae. The top part of the Jixian section, the Qingbaiku System, consists of conglomerate, sandstone and shale (the Xiamaling Formation) and conglomerate, sandstone, glauconitic sandstone, shale and (Jingeryu Forma- tion). The Mesoproterozoic (1800 ~ 1000 Ma) Changcheng and Jixian systems in the Jixian section demonstrate a typical aulacogen sequence formed during the breakup process of Columbia supercontinent. On the other hand, the Neoproterozoic Qingbaikou System might be the product related with the assembly of Rodinia supercontinent. Date: August 20-22, 2007 Cost: RMB 2,000 Yuan. The price includes transportation and board and lodging. Means of transportation: Bus Minimum number of participants: 5 Maximum number of participants: 25

8 PT-02 Archaean –Greenstone Belt in Taishan Global Geopark, Province Leaders: Wan (Taishan Global Geopark), Lu Songnian and Chen Zhihong (Tianjin Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources, CGS), tjlusong- [email protected] Description: Taishan Global Geopark is located at the western part of Shandong Prov- ince, eastern China. It is about 500 km from Beijing and access to the geopark is very easy. The Taishan Granite-Greenstone Belt is a typical Archaean granite-greenstone belt. It is mainly composed of Neoarchaean supracrustal rocks and various granitic rocks. The Taishan greenstones contain units that are unique within China. Komatiite was first reported in the Taishan area as early as 1980, and has been studied ever since. Most geologists widely accept that this is the only Archaean ultramafic extrusive rock containing spinifex texture in China. Based on the new isotopic data, the greenstones formed between 2.7 Ga and 2.62 Ga. Most of Taishan Mountain is occupied by Neoar- chaean granitic rocks. The oldest tonalite gneiss (TTG) is dated at 2735±43Ma, which is a little older than the greenstones. The ages of typical TTG suite range from 2.65 Ga to 2.60 Ga. All rocks older than 2.60 Ga are metamorphosed, deformed and migmatized. In contrast, the younger than 2.60 Ga only show weakly foliation and are varied in composition. Most of them are formed between 2.55 Ga and 2.50 Ga, but there is one intrusion of K-granite dated a little younger than 2.50 Ga. Apart from the Archaean granite –greenstone rocks, a diabase dyke of 1.62 Ga with special barrel-shaped struc- ture will be investigated. Besides investigating the Taishan Granite-Greenstone Belt and examining the new geochronological framework of the belt, the participants will also have a chance to visit places of scenic and historic interest during the trip. Date: August 20-23, 2007

Cost: RMB 3,000 Yuan. The price includes transportation and board and lodging.

Means of transportation: Bus or train

Minimum number of participants: 5

Maximum number of participants: 25

9 PT-03 Archaean (3.8-2.5 Ga) geological evolution in the Anshan area, Province Leaders: Wan Yusheng, Geng Yuansheng and Allen Nutman Description: Anshan is one of five small areas in the world where ≥3.8 Ga continental rocks have been identified. It is unique because it is the only place in the world where such rocks are in a populated region (Anshan city, population >1 million). Its impor- tance not only lies in the discovery of many types of >3.6 Ga rocks, but also in the pres- ence of diverse rock types that record a continuous Archaean record from ≥3.8 to 2.5 Ga. Anshan can be thought of as a miniature of the in respect to early crustal evolution. It provides the possibility of establishing the Archaean tectono- chronological framework of the craton, based on the study of this same area. All the progress made in recent years in geochronological, geochemical and zircon Hf and O isotopic studies of the Anshan area will be shown in the field trip. Date: August 20-24, 2007 Schedule: Date Activities August 20 (Mon.) Driving from Beijing to Anshan by bus (freeway 700 km). Over- night in the International Hotel of Anshan (five stars) for the whole excursion. All excursion stops are no more than 40 minutes from the hotel August 21 (Tue.) Stop 1: 3.8-3.3 Ga Baijiafen Complex composed of 3.80, 3.62, 3.57 and 3.35 Ga TTG rocks and >3.6 Ga supracrustal rocks (bi- otite schist and chert). The 3.35 Ga gneissic trondhjemite is differ- ent geochemically from the nearby Chentaigou granite of 3.3 Ga. Stop 2: 3.35 Ga Chentaigou supracrustal rocks composed of am- phibolite, meta-felsic volcanic rocks, calc-silicate rocks, quartzite, fushcite quartzite and BIF. Stop 3: 2.5 Ga Anshan Group and Pa- laeoproterozoic metasediments (Liaohe Group?) in the Qidashan mining area August 22 (Wed.) Stop 4: 3.8-3.0 Ga Dongshan Complex where there are 3.8 Ga, 3.7 Ga, 3.3 Ga and 3.1 Ga TTG rocks, 3.8 Ga meta-quartz diorite, 3.3 Ga diorite, 3.1 Ga granite and associated Archean meta-ultramafic rocks, amphibolite, biotite schist and quartzite. Some granites show a REE pattern that is anomalous for the Archaean ((La/Yb)n being very small). Stop 5: 3.3 Ga gneissic biotite amphibolite and 3.1 Ga Lishan trondhjemite near the Lishan Park. August 23 (Thu.) Stop 6: 3.8-3.1 Ga Shengousi Complex composed of 3.77 Ga banded TTG rocks, 3.45 Ga fine-grained trondhjemite, 3.33 Ga bi- otite amphibolite and 3.12 Ga gneissic granite, all of them are cut by younger pegmatite dykes. Stop 7: 3.0 Ga Tiejiashan granite and associated metasedimentary rocks (mica schist and quartzite) in Mt. Tiejiashan. August 24 (Fri.) Driving from Anshan back to Beijing by bus Cost: RMB 3,000 Yuan. 10 PT-04 Hengshan-Wutai area – Late Archean to Paleoproterozoic geol- ogy of the Trans-North China Orogen Leaders: Zhai Mingguo, Zhao Guochun, and Guo Jinghui Description: The Hengshan-Wutaishan-Fuping area is situated in the central area of the (NCC), about 300 km SW of Beijing. It consists of four main com- ponents: the Hengshan and Fuping high-grade gneiss terranes, the Wutai low-grade granite-greenstone belt and the Hutuo group. The Hengshan and Fuping gneiss terranes contain predominantly ductilely deformed late Archean to Paleoproterozoic high-grade granitoid orthogneisses, intruded by mafic dykes of gabbroic composition. In the Heng- shan terrane, high-pressure granulites and retrograded eclogites are present. The low- grade late Archean Wutai greenstone belt developed between the two high grade ter- ranes. It consists of bimodal volcanic rocks and metasediments, associated with coeval granitoids. The slightly deformed Hutuo group overlies the Wutai granite-greenstone belt. It is comprised mainly of unmetamorphosed to low-grade metamorphic coarse- grained clastic to chemical sediments with minor volcanic rocks. During the three days field excursion, participants will firstly examine the 1.8-1.9 Ga high pressure basic granulites enclosed in the migmatitic quartofeldspathic gneisses of the Hengshan Terrane and then observe ~2.5 Ga meta-volcanic sedimentary rocks in the Wutai greenstone belt and associated granite bodies. The detailed descriptions on the field stops have been introduced in the guidebook for the field trip of the 2002 Beijing Penrose Conference entitled “A late Archaean to Palaeoproterozoic lower to upper crustal section in the Hengshan-Wutaishan area of North China”. In the field, partici- pants will also examine the sedimentary sequences of the Paleoproterozoic Hutuo group. Date: August 20-24, 2007 Schedule:
