  • Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018
Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

Mattison, III, Ph.D. Committee Member iii ABSTRACT THE VIRTUE OF PENANCE IN THE UNITED STATES, 1955-1975 Name: Morrow, Maria Christina University of Dayton Advisor: Dr. Sandra A. Yocum This dissertation examines the conception of sin and the practice of penance among Catholics in the United States from 1955 to 1975. It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance.

  • What's Bible Study
Studying the Holy Bible by Rev. Christopher J. Pollard “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” An Introduction Dearly Beloved, For Love’s sake, read the Bible. When you hold the letter from your dear father whom you miss so much, you feel his presence. You read and reread his words of encouragement and wisdom. You enter into his mind as you imagine his heart pouring out onto paper. For the love of God, read the Bible. Reading the Bible comes naturally for some Christians and for others it is a painful task. Conversely, interpreting the Bible is an undertaking that some believers are too eager to do while others show wise caution. We should be eager to read the Bible and slow to ascribe meaning to difficult passages without being confident that we do so with understanding, according to their true meaning. The account in Acts of the Apostles about the deacon Philip encountering the Ethiopian eunuch illustrates all this perfectly. The holy chamberlain loves reading Sacred Scripture and is equally eager to have it explained to him. Perusing the Bible for wisdom or as literature has some value. Have fun with that! The Christian, however, knows that the Holy Spirit is the author of Sacred Scripture. Fortunately, the Bible comes with its own directions (see “The Bible’s Self-Contained Instruction Manual”) and if we carefully attend to them, we will realize that understanding Sacred Scripture is a work of the Holy Spirit through the teaching of the Church.

Davidson, Ph.D. Date completed: June 2019 The account of David’s reign at Hebron found in 2 Samuel 2:1—5:5 constitutes a somewhat neglected, yet crucial part of the David narrative, chronicling David’s first years as king. This dissertation investigates these chapters by means of a close reading of the Hebrew text in order to gain a better understanding of the nature of David’s kingship as it is presented in this literary unit.

  • OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY Lesson 26 – Part 1 David – the Bathsheba Affair
OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY Lesson 26 – Part 1 David – The Bathsheba Affair On July 21, 1683, the University of Oxford issued a Judgment and Decree…against certain pernicious Books, and damnable Doctrines, destructive to the sacred Persons of Princes, their State and Government, and of all human Society. This publication was the basis for the last government-sanctioned book burning in England (also occurring in Oxford). Among those books burned was Lex, Rex, written by the Scottish Presbyterian Samuel Rutherford. The book was cited by Oxford for the dangerous doctrine that “if lawful governors become tyrants, or govern otherwise than by the laws of God and man…they forfeit the right they had unto government.”1 Rutherford’s book was alarming to the realm because even its title was against the King’s interest. Lex is Latin for “law,” and Rex is Latin for “king.” The title Lex Rex puts the law as over the king rather than the king over the law. Within the book, in response to the question “whether the king be above the law,” Rutherford wrote, “The law hath a supremacy of constitution above the king.”2 In part of his argument, Rutherford reached back to the Biblical account of King Saul noting, God, in making Saul a king, doth not by any royal stamp give him a power to sin, or to play the tyrant.3 Rutherford is right for Saul, and also for his successor, King David. As we consider David in this lesson, we see that he found a time where he violated in rapid succession three of the Ten Commandments, but not without dire consequence to him and to his family.
