    TRANSFORMATION OF “OLD” SLAVERY INTO ATLANTIC SLAVERY: CAPE VERDE ISLANDS, C. 1500–1879 By Lumumba Hamilcar Shabaka A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History- Doctor of Philosophy 2013 ABSTRACT TRANSFORMATION OF “OLD” SLAVERY INTO ATLANTIC SLAVERY: CAPE VERDE ISLANDS, C. 1500–1879 By Lumumba Hamilcar Shabaka This dissertation explores how the Atlantic slave trade integrated the Cape Verde archipelago into the cultural, economic, and political milieu of Upper Guinea Coast between 1500 and 1879. The archipelago is about 300 miles off the coast of Senegal, West Africa. The Portuguese colonized the “uninhabited” archipelago in 1460 and soon began trading with the mainland for slaves and black African slaves became the majority, resulting in the first racialized Atlantic slave society. Despite cultural changes, I argue that cultural practices by the lower classes, both slaves and freed slaves, were quintessentially “Guinean.” Regional fashion and dress developed between the archipelago and mainland with adorning and social use of panu (cotton cloth). In particular, I argue Afro-feminine aesthetics developed in the islands by freed black women that had counterparts in the mainland, rather than mere creolization. Moreover, the study explores the social instability in the islands that led to the exile of liberated slaves, slaves, and the poor, the majority of whom were of African descent as part of the Portuguese efforts to organize the Atlantic slave trade in the Upper th Guinea Coast. With the abolition of slavery in Cape Verde in the 19 century, Portugal used freed slaves and the poor as foot soldiers and a labor force to consolidate “Portuguese Guinea.” Many freed slaves resisted this mandatory service.

    Countries at the Crossroads Countries at the Crossroads 2012 The Gambia Introduction In November 2011, former soldier Yahya Jammeh won a fourth five-year term as president of The Gambia. Jammeh came to power in a bloodless military coup in 1994 that overthrew the democratically elected government of President Dawda K. Jawara, who had ruled The Gambia after independence from 1965 to 1994. The 2011 election, like earlier presidential elections under President Jammeh in 1996, 2001, and 2006, was tainted by state-sponsored violence and intimidation, low opposition party media access, inflated voter rolls, a truncated campaign process that favored the incumbent, and an uneven playing field. As one of four functioning democracies in Africa before the third-wave liberalization of the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Gambia under founding President Jawara enjoyed acclaim for its adherence to democratic norms and principles. Between 1960 and 1992, the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) conducted 11 parliamentary and five presidential elections that were deemed free and fair overall. In 1992, President Jawara won a fifth five-year term and captured 59 percent of the vote. Until then, The Gambia had not experienced a single electoral turnover via the ballot box. In 1994, despite regular elections and relative peace and stability since independence from Britain, the military’s grievances related to pay and living conditions combined with many Gambians’ disenchantment with institutions that had failed to create economic opportunities for the majority of the country. This convergence led to the success of the Jammeh-led coup that resulted in the ouster of President Jawara.

    African Studies Quarterly | Volume 18, Issue 4| October 2019 Mapping Political Homophobia in Senegal BORIS BERTOLT and LEA E.J.S. MASSE Abstract: This contribution examines the instrumentalization of homophobia in Senegal by developing on the concept of political homophobia. Since 2008, non-heterosexuality in Senegal has been the subject of frequent attacks in mass-media, political discourses and religious speeches. An analysis of political and public rhetoric reveals that political homophobia is a modular phenomenon inscribed in broader power dynamics between Senegalese society and the West, religious authorities and political leaders, and between political leaders and their opponents. The instrumentalization of political homophobia by political leaders and religious authorities emerges as a strategy to strengthen their position in a context of crisis. Key words: political homophobia; homosexuality; same-sex sex; Senegal; cultural decolonization; power relations Introduction Since the end of the 1990s, several African political leaders have spoken against same-sex sexualities and pushed for the reinforcement of criminal penalties sanctioning same-sex conducts.1 In Cameroon, for instance, popular concerns about an alleged spread of same-sex practices in the early 2000s triggered a wave of support for harsher anti-homosexuals laws.2 In Uganda, an Anti- Homosexuality Bill—also known as the “Kill the Gays” bill—was submitted to the parliament in 2009, proposing life sentences for “aggravated homosexuality.”3 This re-politicization of homosexuality
