QUOTE OF THE MONTH “Americans throughout this great land set aside Veterans Day for special remembrance of the men and women who have served to protect our freedom. The sound of bugles playing taps will pierce the air at countless ceremonies around the country and at our bases overseas in tribute to those who gave their lives in order to safeguard human liberty" Ronald Reagan Oct. 26, 1981 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Monterey was the location of the CFRW State Convention recently and six of us were there to enjoy a weekend of workshops, speakers, and camaraderie with fellow Republican Women not to mention a surprise appearance by "Elvis". We celebrated Shirley Mark's ending term as President of CFRW and the "Elvis" entertainment was a complete surprise to her as well as to the rest of us. There was a lot of dancing in the aisles until Elvis left the building. A new slate of officers for 2018-19 was elected and the new CFRW President is Nam-Yong Horn. The restructure of the CFRW was approved by vote of the delegates to take effect in 2020 with some changes to be discussed in the coming months. Our own club elected the 2018-19 officers at the October meeting. They are: Karen Leonhard, President Sue Kleber, 1st Vice President CFRW President is Nam-Yong Horn Jeane Errea-Mills, 2nd Vice President Dorothy Errea, Treasurer Kathy Forgnone, Secretary This will be the second term for all except for Jeane Errea-Mills. My thanks to Sharlene Hughes for her past 2 years as 2nd Vice President. Shar's organization of the annual Scholarship Luncheons was outstanding and I appreciate all she has done for our club in her term. Looking forward to 2018 with elections coming up for Mayor Mike LeBarre and Darlene Acosta to KC City Council. I know I can count on everyone to help out in their campaigns. Pres. Thank you to Bernice Mason who generously donated her Opportunity Drawing winnings to the troop package project. This is a good time of the year to include a Christmas ornament or cards. If you don't have time to shop, give me a call and I will do the shopping for you. Of course, we will be happy to receive donations for postage, as well. Each box costs $18.85 to mail. FLAG DAY November 11 — Veterans Day November 23 — Thanksgiving Day Table “manned” by Miguel Errea, Jeane Errea and Karen Loenhard. View From The Edge Of The Crowd by Lee Schell There is so much going on, right now, that I am like a yapping dog wanting to bite every ankle in view. Picture this mean little Chihuahua-mix in a sea of legs and feet trying to take a chunk out of every moving target. That's me! Remember the controversy over candidate Trump's little locker room conversation on that bus with then Today Show contributor Billy Bush? They were yuking it up, Trump not realizing there was a live mic recording the whole moment. I'm not defending vile, locker room banter, but it is, after all, just talk. Harvey Weinstein, who was supported and enabled by the Hollywood movie community, actually committed unwanted sexual acts against women who knew he could instantly derail their entertainment industry careers. And the so-called Hollywood elite have the gall to try and lecture us about morality and politics? Give me a break! "He who is without sin cast the first stone." Then there is the NFL kneel down situation. These over paid, underworked athletic brats who get cars and hookers delivered to them by their handlers, can't stand up and put their hands over their hearts for ninety seconds to honor the flag and the anthem of the country which gives them the means to be the spoiled rotten social parasites that they are. We're going to hear about league unity in the next coming weeks by Billionaire team owners who get their stadiums financed and built by tax payers and earn their fortunes on the back of football fans. Yet, the fans will be left out of this so-called unity. NFL unity will only come when owners, coaches AND players stand up together with fans for that short but vitally important ninety seconds that set the tone for the entire event to follow. I'm no official firearms expert, but I have sent quite a bit of lead downrange from various and sundry handguns, rifles and shotgun. I also believe that the anti-gun crowd's goals are to disarm the American public and repeal the Second Amendment. That said--I was puzzled, three years ago, when something called a "bump stock" was approved by ATFE, the federal agency tasked with defining what is legal and what isn't in the firearms industry. There is an argument to be made that Las Vegas shooter, Stephen Paddock's use of bump stocks on his rifles actually saved lives for two reasons: first, the way bump stocks work, they destroy the accuracy of a rifle by making it bounce around. Second, bump stocks, like any full auto fire, go through loaded magazines at a high rate and often cause rifles to jam, which may be the reason Paddock stopped firing for a time, because he was clearing jammed guns. Banning bump stocks or any other new "feel good" gun laws or restrictions will do nothing to save future innocent lives. It will only punish law abiding gun owners and give the "gun grabbers" one more minor victory in their goal to disarm the public, leaving us vulnerable to the bad guys who couldn't care less about any gun laws.
