QUOTE OF THE MONTH “Americans throughout this great land set aside Veterans Day for special remembrance of the men and women who have served to protect our freedom. The sound of bugles playing taps will pierce the air at countless ceremonies around the country and at our bases overseas in tribute to those who gave their lives in order to safeguard human liberty" Ronald Reagan Oct. 26, 1981 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Monterey was the location of the CFRW State Convention recently and six of us were there to enjoy a weekend of workshops, speakers, and camaraderie with fellow Republican Women not to mention a surprise appearance by "Elvis". We celebrated Shirley Mark's ending term as President of CFRW and the "Elvis" entertainment was a complete surprise to her as well as to the rest of us. There was a lot of dancing in the aisles until Elvis left the building. A new slate of officers for 2018-19 was elected and the new CFRW President is Nam-Yong Horn. The restructure of the CFRW was approved by vote of the delegates to take effect in 2020 with some changes to be discussed in the coming months. FLAG DAY November 11 — Veterans Day November 23 — Thanksgiving Day Table “manned” by Miguel Errea, Jeane Errea and Karen Loenhard. View From The Edge Of The Crowd by Lee Schell There is so much going on, right now, that I am like a yapping dog wanting to bite every ankle in view. Picture this mean little Chihuahua-mix in a sea of legs and feet trying to take a chunk out of every moving target. That's me! Remember the controversy over candidate Trump's little locker room conversation on that bus with then Today Show contributor Billy Bush? They were yuking it up, Trump not realizing there was a live mic recording the whole moment. I'm not defending vile, locker room banter, but it is, after all, just talk. Harvey Weinstein, who was supported and enabled by the Hollywood movie community, actually committed unwanted sexual acts against women who knew he could instantly derail their entertainment industry careers. And the so-called Hollywood elite have the gall to try and lecture us about morality and politics? Give me a break! "He who is without sin cast the first stone." Then there is the NFL kneel down situation. These over paid, underworked athletic brats who get cars and hookers delivered to them by their handlers, can't stand up and put their hands over their hearts for ninety seconds to honor the flag and the anthem of the country which gives them the means to be the spoiled rotten social parasites that they are. We're going to hear about league unity in the next coming weeks by Billionaire team owners who get their stadiums financed and built by tax payers and earn their fortunes on the back of football fans. Yet, the fans will be left out of this so-called unity. NFL unity will only come when owners, coaches AND players stand up together with fans for that short but vitally important ninety seconds that set the tone for the entire event to follow. I'm no official firearms expert, but I have sent quite a bit of lead downrange from various and sundry handguns, rifles and shotgun. I also believe that the anti-gun crowd's goals are to disarm the American public and repeal the Second Amendment. That said--I was puzzled, three years ago, when something called a "bump stock" was approved by ATFE, the federal agency tasked with defining what is legal and what isn't in the firearms industry. There is an argument to be made that Las Vegas shooter, Stephen Paddock's use of bump stocks on his rifles actually saved lives for two reasons: first, the way bump stocks work, they destroy the accuracy of a rifle by making it bounce around. Second, bump stocks, like any full auto fire, go through loaded magazines at a high rate and often cause rifles to jam, which may be the reason Paddock stopped firing for a time, because he was clearing jammed guns. Banning bump stocks or any other new "feel good" gun laws or restrictions will do nothing to save future innocent lives. It will only punish law abiding gun owners and give the "gun grabbers" one more minor victory in their goal to disarm the public, leaving us vulnerable to the bad guys who couldn't care less about any gun laws.

Brunswick seniors celebrate a golden age By JENNIFER AMATO Staff Writer n a building that is just 25 years old, there are enough memories to last 25 Ilifetimes. The South Brunswick Senior Center will highlight its 25th anniversary on Sept. 22 with a celebratory party. Betsy Sansig, 92, remembers when a celebration was held to mark the first offi cial day of the opening of the center in 1991. “The mayor was here. And a lot of big shots,” she said of the ribbon-cutting and luncheon to follow. Prior to the establishment of the senior center, a group of seniors would meet in the early 1980s at the municipal building to pe tition for a space of their own while using Crossroads Middle School, the VFW, the high school and Woodlol Park as meeting grounds. “We used to join trips. We used to go away sometimes for a week ... and book a hotel,” Sansig said. Then, with permission of the mayor and council at the time, a 10,000-square-foot structure was built for a population of 2,000 residents who were age 55 or older, with about 50 seniors coming to the center each day. A group would go door-to-door selling stickers to residents — Sansig did not re member what the stickers looked like — in order to buy $3,000 worth of kitchenware and dishware for the new center.

  • NBC's Billy Bush: Why More White Males Should
NBC’s Billy Bush: Why more White males should acknowledge the arrogance and privilege of White males, By Brian Norgaard As a White male who sees the enormous value that social equality can bring, I find no compelling reason to deny that White male privilege exists. I didn’t always think this way. It was only after I made a conscious decision to deepen my knowledge about intercultural issues that I was able to perceive the world through a cleaner, clearer cultural lens. I can now say unequivocally that past and present sociopolitical forces have acted in my favor, granting me unearned privileges because of my White race and male gender. To reach this conclusion, I became neither more nor less conservative or liberal than before, and neither did I adopt any particular political ideology. I just decided that I didn’t want to whittle away what precious little time I have left on this beautiful planet ignorant, angry and miserable, living a life predicated on self-deception and dishonesty. I decided to open up my mind and heart so that I might be more accepting of critical self- analysis. I also tried listening to people without interjecting as much, so that I might understand their stories instead of constantly defending mine. With those two changes alone, something interesting happened. For the first time, I felt like I could engage the world in three dimensions. My previous life, the life dominated by one-dimensional beliefs, had severely limited my capacity for reason and logical analysis on just about every social and economic issue of importance.

Rob Kim/Getty Images By Billy Bush Dec. 3, 2017 He said it. “Grab ’em by the pussy.” Of course he said it. And we laughed along, without a single doubt that this was hypothetical hot air from America’s highest‑rated bloviator. Along with Donald Trump and me, there were seven other guys present on the bus at the time, and every single one of us assumed we were listening to a crass standup act. He was performing. Surely, we thought, none of this was real. We now know better. Recently I sat down and read an article dating from October of 2016; it was published days after my departure from NBC, a time when I wasn’t processing anything productively. In it, the author reviewed the various firsthand accounts about Mr. Trump that, at that point, had come from 20 women. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/03/opinion/billy-bush-trump-access-hollywood-tape.html?emc=edit_ta_20171203&nl=top-stories&nlid=1747381&ref=cta&_r=0 1/7 12/4/2017 Billy Bush: Yes, Donald Trump, You Said That - The New York Times Some of what Natasha Stoynoff, Rachel Crooks, Jessica Leeds and Jill Harth alleged involved forceful kissing. • Sex, Lies, and Stereotypes: Gendered Implications of Fake News for Women in Politics
Public Integrity, 21: 491–502, 2019 # 2019 American Society for Public Administration ISSN: 1099-9922 print/1558-0989 online DOI: 10.1080/10999922.2019.1626695 Sex, Lies, and Stereotypes: Gendered Implications of Fake News for Women in Politics Bonnie Stabile , Aubrey Grant, Hemant Purohit, and Kelsey Harris George Mason University This analysis examines the literature on gendered media coverage of women candidates for higher office, and considers how biases in the treatment of candidates based on gender may be evident in or exacerbated by the promulgation of fake news. Using the 2016 Presidential election cycle in the United States as a case study, two fake news stories are investigated, which, like most fake news stories at the time, exhibited coverage in favor of the candidacy of Donald Trump and demonized or denigrated his opponent, Hillary Clinton. Findings suggest that the Pizzagate and Hillary Health Scare stories evince gendered narratives supporting stereotypes of women as unfit for leadership positions, and either villainize or trivialize women, depending on their perceived degree of power. Using a dataset of news articles and tweets from the months surrounding the 2016 election, evidence is offered of more negative coverage of the female ver- sus male contender, in keeping with the findings of the literature, though the presence of poten- tially confounding factors, including personality and party, is acknowledged. Keywords: fake news, gender bias, women in politics Fake news took on a particularly virulent form in the 2016 U.S. election campaign between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, which was also uniquely fraught with raucous discussion of gender.

  • Change and Continuity in the Financing of the 2016 U.S. Federal Election
ONE Change and Continuity in the Financing of the 2016 U.S. Federal Election David B. Magleby The 2016 election had both continuity and change in how it was financed and in the under lying dynamics of the election. When mea sured in dollars raised and spent, the gap between nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was the greatest in any election since the era of more reliable reporting began in 1976. The gap between Clin- ton and her joint party fundraising committees and Trump and his joint party fundraising committees was more than $285 million. Given this disparity, how Donald Trump financed and ran his cam- paign was dif fer ent from other candidates in his ability to exploit free media coverage, his limited fundraising in the nomination phase, and his claims that his opponents in both the nomination and general election phases of the contest were corrupted by their donors. The financing of Trump’s campaign became more conventional in the general election, where he relied heavi ly on a joint fundraising agreement with his party, used their voter mobilization infrastructure, successfully tapped into contributions from small donors, and benefited from spending by Super PACs and nonprofit groups late in the campaign. Whether another presi- dential candidate can mount a Trump- like campaign in the future is un- certain, and Trump himself has signaled that when he seeks reelection in 2020 he intends to mount a more conventional campaign by aggressively fundraising earlier than his pre de ces sors and endorsing a Super PAC, Amer i ca First.1 1 01-3659-2-ch01.indd 1 2/26/19 4:11 AM 2 David B.
