Newspaper, behind the scenes

Newspaper club meets on Wednesday from 2:45-3:30. There are 22 kids in newspaper. During that time, some people get a lot done, while others get smaller amounts completed. People in newspaper club like to talk and do weird things, which is no surprise why we have a blast and write amazing stories. We have competitions and talk a lot. We also do our interviews during this time. We have to have our questions ready, and then we go. Out of those 22 kids, some are quiet while others are really loud. We are all different, but we have one thing in common. We all enjoy writing and newspaper club! The best part of newspaper is that we can all contribute our different points of views; each bringing uniqueness to Pearson.

Newspaper club comes to an end

As you know, the school year is coming to an end. That also means this will be our last newspaper together as we continue on our separate ways. Therefore, as part of this last editorial, I asked some of our newspaper family a few general questions.

AVA What mythical creature would you like to be? A unicorn

What will you miss about newspaper? Getting together with friends and writing with them!

GRETA What’s your favorite subject? Reading or band

What will you miss about newspaper? I like that I get to write with people who also get to write.

JENNA Why did you sign up for newspaper? It looked fun, and I love to write.

What’s your favorite thing about newspaper? Writing with people I enjoy!

Believe me: Part 1 I have always wanted to tell someone how I feel, but guess what, I can’t. When I was three, my real mom trapped me in a car on a 100 degree day. As minutes passed, I got hotter and hotter. As I screamed for help, my voice faded away. Thirteen years later, I am in high school, a place where no human being even knows I exist. On the first day of high school, it was the worst. My ONE friend, Samantha, was signing to me. A man came up to us and said, “Oh, look at you, doing all that fancy signing.” “Ha,” I wanted to say. “At least I’m not dumb; I know how to talk.” Getting through these hard times was horrible. I couldn’t tell anyone how I really felt, what I really knew, or who I really liked. It was a long, hard time of people just assuming. So many people can be mean. Samantha was always there for me until she wasn’t. Callie, the schools “popular girl,” started hanging out with Samantha and took my best friend away. I was all alone. I couldn’t do anything about it. So one day, in my language arts class, we did a social experiment. Callie and I were partnered against each other to see who could get the better grade, but no one would know which story belongs to who. Tonight would be the reading of our two stories, and I was a hot mess. 3 Saber Stories

Believe me: Part 2 I didn’t have my story done yet. I knew I would lose because Callie would probably tell her friends what her story is and make them vote for her. Now here’s the thing, normal people would have a plan to win; I’m not normal. There we were, the two of us at the side of the stage anxious for who would win. Watching our two papers absorb the wonderful light of the stage made me confident in my eyes. Everyone came in, read the stories, put a piece of paper in the box, and sat down. This was it. Everyone voted. A tiny man came on the stage; his scratchy voice troubling everyone’s ears. “AND THE WINNER IS...” he screams out. Everyone was at the very edge of their seats. “CALLIE!” My mind went wandering. What? How could she win? I was so close yet so far. Lost in my thoughts, all of a sudden, the tiny man re-entered the stage. “I am here to announce we had a little misreading. We apologize for the mistake. We missed a vote. The real winner is LILY!” I jumped up like a rocket and started jumping like a bouncy ball. Just when I suddenly felt like I belonged again, Callie walked up to me and said, “I’m very sorry for the way I treated you. Do you want to start over and be friends?” And that’s when I knew, Callie had made a mistake. I had always belonged. From that point on Callie, Samantha, and I were the best of friends. Believe me! 4 Saber Stories

Um, who are you?

Throughout the U.S., more than 500 kids sit in a school and Information half of them don’t even know who they are sitting next to and possibly never will. While some students thought it was stupid to go around in a circle and introduce themselves in elementary school, others did not. This was how some people met their best friends or even just got to know the kids in their class. Some scientists even say that if you know others in your learning environment, you are more comfortable and may be more likely to perform better on tests. While, if you don’t know the people around you, your uncomfortable and nervous, so you may do worse on tests. Bottom line is this. Start saying hi to people in the hallway. Study tips Guess what? Everyone’s FAVORITE time of year has come and gone, but it will be back again. The GLORIOUS... DUN DUN DUHHHH, MCA’s. Don’t worry because I’m about to give you some awesome study tips that will help you when studying for future MCA’s. But….. sadly this isn’t magic, so you will have to study to get results. Without further ado, here are some awesome study tips to help you with the MCA’s in 7th grade.

•Break your study guides into sections. Don’t do it all at once, so you don’t get overwhelmed.

•Set up study groups with your friends. That way you can help each other in subjects that you’re not very strong in.

•Make sure you know the exact date of your test so that when your teacher tells you the day before the test, you don’t have to go home and do every single thing in one night.

•Use old tests or practice tests to help you study for new ones, especially with MCA’s. MCA’s cover almost everything you’ve learned, so use old practice tests for newer tests.

•Every time you remember to study for a whole week straight treat yourself. These tips may not get you a perfect score, but I’m almost 100% positive it will get you a better score than if you never studied at all. 9 Saber Stories

Muslim Culture

Did you know that Muslim means “anyone or anything that surrenders itself to the true will of God?” I am Muslim, and this is how my life became. Our family prays five times per day. Everyday, wherever we go, it is important for us to wear our headwear. This is an expectation. The only place I do not have to wear my headgear is occasionally at home. There are five pillars of Islam that we follow.

1. To be a Muslim, you must have faith. 2. You need prayer, Salat, at least five times a day. 3. To be considered a good person, you send things for charity (food, money, toys, etc.) 4. During the month of Ramadan, we fast. This is one of the many times our culture fasts (abstinence of food and drink). 5. We participate in a pilgrimage where we go to Mecca and pray many times to God to forgive our sins.

We should learn about each other’s cultures, so we can truly understand each other. This is my culture. What culture are you?

Basketball vs. Baseball Attention baseball fans...please pay attention. Right now it’s time to listen and not argue. First off, basketball is more action packed. When there are VS rivals, players get more competitive. In baseball, what are they supposed to do, run faster? Secondly, basketball doesn’t take that much time to play. The duration is about 48 Rivals minutes, a little extra time for timeouts, free throws, etc. Do you prefer basketball Baseball takes, I don’t know, or baseball? In my 3.5 HOURS! Who wants to sit opinion, basketball is that long? Last but not least, better than baseball. I basketball is a little safer than can give you a few baseball. In basketball, there reasons why. Although are a few concussions here baseball is a unique and there, but in baseball a hard ball could hit you in the sport, basketball is more ribs, and you have the action-packed, takes less potential of hitting yourself time to play, and is a with a metal bat. These are safer sport. the reasons I think basketball is better than baseball.

The shakopee teachers 4-4 relay

Interviews, interviews, and more interviews!

With the sad ending of Pearson 6th Grade Center coming so soon, members of the Newspaper Club wanted to interview as many teachers as they could for the last edition of Saber Stories. Since we knew that we were all going to be interviewing teachers, we decided to make a little contest of it. We wanted to see which newspaper members could come-up with the best teacher interview questions for the newspaper. We split into groups and began interviews. All of the teachers and staff that we interviewed are noted below, and if we didn’t get to some, it’s simply because we didn’t have the time or couldn’t reach the staff member in the amount of time we had after school. We hope you enjoy! Thank you to all the wonderful Pearson staff throughout this building. You have not only built an empire, but you have also supported a magical place. The Pearson team will be missed.
