There are 22 kids in newspaper. During that time, some people get a lot done, while others get smaller amounts completed. People in newspaper club like to talk and do weird things, which is no surprise why we have a blast and write amazing stories. We have competitions and talk a lot. We also do our interviews during this time. We have to have our questions ready, and then we go. Out of those 22 kids, some are quiet while others are really loud. We are all different, but we have one thing in common. We all enjoy writing and newspaper club! The best part of newspaper is that we can all contribute our different points of views; each bringing uniqueness to Pearson. 1 Saber Stories by Ella Mingo SHAKOPEE’S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER - Since 2017 Newspaper club comes to an end As you know, the school year is coming to an end. When I was three, my real mom trapped me in a car on a 100 degree day. As minutes passed, I got hotter and hotter. As I screamed for help, my voice faded away. Thirteen years later, I am in high school, a place where no human being even knows I exist. On the first day of high school, it was the worst. My ONE friend, Samantha, was signing to me. A man came up to us and said, “Oh, look at you, doing all that fancy signing.” “Ha,” I wanted to say. “At least I’m not dumb; I know how to talk.” Getting through these hard times was horrible. I couldn’t tell anyone how I really felt, what I really knew, or who I really liked. It was a long, hard time of people just assuming. So many people can be mean. Samantha was always there for me until she wasn’t. Callie, the schools “popular girl,” started hanging out with Samantha and took my best friend away. I was all alone. I couldn’t do anything about it. So one day, in my language arts class, we did a social experiment. Callie and I were partnered against each other to see who could get the better grade, but no one would know which story belongs to who. Tonight would be the reading of our two stories, and I was a hot mess. 3 Saber Stories by Saber Scoop SHAKOPEE’S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER - Since 2017 Believe me: Part 2 I didn’t have my story done yet. I knew I would lose because Callie would probably tell her friends what her story is and make them vote for her. Now here’s the thing, normal people would have a plan to win; I’m not normal. There we were, the two of us at the side of the stage anxious for who would win. Watching our two papers absorb the wonderful light of the stage made me confident in my eyes. Everyone came in, read the stories, put a piece of paper in the box, and sat down. This was it. Everyone voted. A tiny man came on the stage; his scratchy voice troubling everyone’s ears. “AND THE WINNER IS...” he screams out. Everyone was at the very edge of their seats. “CALLIE!” My mind went wandering. What? How could she win? I was so close yet so far. Lost in my thoughts, all of a sudden, the tiny man re-entered the stage. “I am here to announce we had a little misreading. We apologize for the mistake. We missed a vote. The real winner is LILY!” I jumped up like a rocket and started jumping like a bouncy ball. Just when I suddenly felt like I belonged again, Callie walked up to me and said, “I’m very sorry for the way I treated you. Do you want to start over and be friends?” And that’s when I knew, Callie had made a mistake. I had always belonged. From that point on Callie, Samantha, and I were the best of friends. Believe me! 4 Saber Stories by Saber Scoop SHAKOPEE’S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER - Since 2017 Um, who are you? Throughout the U.S., more than 500 kids sit in a school and Information half of them don’t even know who they are sitting next to and possibly never will. While some students thought it was stupid to go around in a circle and introduce themselves in elementary school, others did not. This was how some people met their best friends or even just got to know the kids in their class. Some scientists even say that if you know others in your learning environment, you are more comfortable and may be more likely to perform better on tests. While, if you don’t know the people around you, your uncomfortable and nervous, so you may do worse on tests. Bottom line is this. Start saying hi to people in the hallway. Yes, those people you don’t know. Get to know others and maybe make a new friend! With all of us going into the middle schools next year, this is a perfect opportunity! There will be plenty more individuals that we don’t know, and we have the chance to meet them. 5 Saber Stories by Lilly Hewitt SHAKOPEE’S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER - Since 2017 East vs. West Next year, the new middle school that students will attend depends on their address.
