ABSTRACT
Gamma-ray bursts GRBs are among the greatest mysteries of high-
energy astrophysics. Since their discovery in 1967, more than 2,000
events have b een observed by several exp eriments; still, no astrophysi-
cist can surely state to day what GRBs are and where they come from.
Before the advent of Bepp oSAX only a statistical approachtothe
problem was followed. The rst, but still recent, results of suchinves-
tigations are the isotropy of the GRBs' arrival directions in the sky,
and the paucityofweak events with resp ect to a homogeneous spatial
distribution.
The Bepp oSAX satellite, not sp eci cally designed for GRB obser-
vations, carries the right instrumentation for a novel approach to the
GRB problem. It has b een able to detect, lo calize, and follow up a few
GRBs on very short time scales. This allowed for the discovery of the
rst X-ray afterglow of a GRB. The precision and rapidity of the detec-
tion, and the wide dissemination of information, has p ermitted other
observatories to pinp oint the event, discovering the rst optical/radio
afterglow, and the measurement of its distance and size.

1 Observed Global Prop erties of Gamma-Ray
Bursts
Gamma-ray bursts are intense, short ashes of gamma rays arriving from any
direction in the sky, at unpredictable times. They usually emit most of their
energy in the hard-X/gamma-ray range, but they have b een detected from a few
keV up to tens of GeV.
Bursts were found in 1969 by gamma-ray detectors onb oard the military satel-
lites Vela 5A, 5B, 6A, and 6B, employed by the USA to monitor against p ossible
Russian and Chinese nuclear tests in the atmosphere in violation of the 1963 Nu-
clear Test Ban Treaty. After their discovery, they were also found in older data
and the rst event, it turned out, was recorded on July 2, 1967. Being a re-
sult of military investigations they were classi ed and announced to the scienti c

community only in 1973.
After their discovery, several gamma-ray exp eriments were included in the
scienti c payload of subsequent satellites, and continued to detect GRBs. Today
